Lying to Congress. Clinton Did It, Why Can't Bonds?

With Barry Bonds’ defense attorney, Allen Ruby, saying he would call on up to six witnesses, including possibly the King of Swing himself, it was no surprise that the U.S. District courthouse that serves as the stage for Bonds’ federal perjury trial was full.

People started lining up at 6:30 Wednesday morning to grab one of the limited seats available to the public. A high school debate team hoped to witness a lesson on the judicial process.

And Roger Clemens may say he is not following Bonds’ trial, but the lawyers that will defend The Rocket on charges that he lied to Congress, are. A rep from the Houston law firm was stuffed in back. I counted 22 media members in the middle rows, and Bonds’ family and friends filled the front.

But any instant interest Bonds’ defense team may have ignited in this case was quickly doused. The jury was led in at 9:25 a.m., and less than three minutes later was led back out, done for the day. The defense rested without calling a single witness. No Home Run King. No medical expert for “shrinkage” rebuttal. No former personal trainer(s)
