Jos violence: 'Everyone lives in fear of his neighbour'

Plateau, at the crossroads between Nigeria's predominantly Muslim north and the largely Christian south, was once celebrated as "The Home of Peace and Tourism".
Now it is home to neither. The state capital, Jos, is stuck in a cycle of sectarian violence stretching back more than a decade.

Nice post.
Noting select portions:
"[the] psychologically it's affecting our students, looking at these people . .
Impunity
The police confirmed that the suspects initially charged were released
on bail. Two years on, the case is yet to come to court. . . .There is no record of a single successful prosecution related to those
crimes."Hopefully, this "third world" example does not foreshadow other realms of our globally enlightened community(s); where hate, discrimination and invigoration of ill-will seemingly rule o'r nows more emphatically equipped judiciary with impunity.
(In my opinion) History can teach, if we could/might only listen.

A good and informative post. Thank you.
Nigeria has had sect on sect (or tribe on tribe if you prefer) violence since its independence. It has been exacerbated by divisions form the oil business. But, this, Muslims killing Christians, is relatively new. It adds a new dimension to the killing--religion. The same is going on in Ivory Coast.

What is the motivation behind the Politicians stirring things up? Who benefits? It's usually money, but if the political structure is in the hands of one group, why the agitation.
There is something at work here, with a divide and conquer. I didn't catch, from the article, a desire for a Muslim ruled society, but I did get a sense of the existing political structure trying to hold one segment down.
Is there an exterior force at work?
The US has a vested interested in keeping Nigeria a poorly developed nation and using their oil as part of our national strategic reserve, kind of like Mexico. - 1 year ago

Im not sure who would be wanting this nation so violently divided but I did love the part about the neighborhood that had banned politicians and they were living in peace because they kept the politicians out. Really looking at Nigeria's history its probably the hard core conservatives on both sides vying for power by blaming all their problems on the easiest scape goat, the guy with the other religion.

yet another tragic repercussion of the system currently in place globally. we need to dispense with borders, with nations and reach across as brothers and sisters, as all of humankind, and get back it touch with the earth and our place as human beings in it

Its never to late to bring love instead of hate, its never too late to turn to one another and share each others burdens instead of desperately throwing our own burdens onto others. Its just how hard will we have to learn this lesson?
