Obama ready to frame compromise with Republicans (again) on Wednesday this week.

When I was a small boy I was bullied more than most, mainly because I was a foot shorter than than everyone else. They demanded the cupcake my mother had packed in my lunchbox, or, they said, they’d beat me up. After a close call in the boy’s room, I paid up. Weeks later, they demanded half my sandwich as well. I gave in to that one, too. But I could see what was coming next. They’d demand everything else. Somewhere along the line I decided I’d have a take a stand. The fight wasn’t pleasant. But the bullies stopped their bullying.
I hope the President decides he has to take a stand, and the sooner the better......

Obama to Deliver Major Speech on Debt Reduction -- Is He Caving to the GOP?
By Steve Benen
President Obama will deliver a major speech this week about plans to reduce federal budget deficits and long-term debt, senior adviser David Plouffe said this morning.
"He's going to lay out his approach very clearly," Plouffe said on CNN's State of the Union, one of a string of Sunday talk show appearances he made.
Obama will address cuts to defense and domestic spending, as well as what to do with the growing entitlement programs of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, Plouffe said.........

And then there's pointing out the obvious at The Nation:
No Shutdown, but a Lot of Sellouts
By John Nichols
The arrangement worked out Friday night averted the threatened shutdown with a two-step process. First, the House and Senate passed a one-week spending bill that addressed the immediate threat. That should give Congress and the White House time to finalize a fiscal 2011 spending deal—on which they have agreed in principle—before an April 15 deadline.
So who won the standoff? President Obama says the deal is good for the future, and that might make some Democrats think that he and the Democrats prevailed.
They didn’t.......

So here we are. Obama is supposed to be the standard bearer for the Democrats and when push comes to shove, he's being shoved aside again and with what seems like very little in the way of passionate objection. It will be interesting to watch in the upcoming months just how flexible Obama really is to the demands of GOP and their draconian cuts to the American social fabric. I fear that by the time Obama leaves office he'll be a limber as an olympic gymnast and wearing nothing but a thong.

“Bush and the GOP convinced us that by giving the Rich obscene tax breaks that we all be beneficiaries to an economy that will flourish, that the unemployment numbers would be pushing zero. Insanity is repeating a certain action—repeatedly—and expecting different results. I can understand Obama’s desire to expand the base of potential voters, his desire to get back the independents, but I will not be willing to understand him if he continues to emulate the bush modus operandi of stealing from the poor to give tax breaks to the rich. We are at a very dangerous crossroads; middleclass and underclass America is not only being run over by busses of the corporate elites, Just when the job market is being to show improvement and the bottom of that “ditch” is beginning to get smaller and smaller, we are assaulted from all sides. Our workers rights are threatened, our human rights are diminishing, women’s rights are being curtailed, our students education is in doubt, their teachers are persecuted, and we are all asked to do more with less as social programs are gutted while profits of Banker’s row and Wall Street are reaching soaring epic heights. Enough is enough. If you want the voters to stand with you in 2012, you have to stand up to the axis of Weasels (gop, baggers & Koch bros). We voters will do our part, we got your back but you have to have our backs as well—not now, but RIGHT NOW.”

The narrative needs to be reframed from cutting entitlements, which are inviolate and should never be on the table, to one of raising revenue to pay down the debt and produce jobs. That means eliminating loop holes and subsidies for the wealthy and big business. Military spending, too, needs to be on the table: not benefits to vets, or their pay, rather the inordinate amount of money tied up in weapons development and government contracts.
It is time to send in the Progressive Caucus to negotiate, and advocate for the implementation of The People's Plan for a balanced budget.

Let's all WAKE UP.
Recall that President Obama negotiated with the Republicans a continuation of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy in late 2010 and shoved it down the throats of the lame-duck Democratic Congress after the midterms.
Recall that President Obama has several times gone on air to brag that he's cut domestic programs more even than Reagan.
Recall that President Obama has furthered the use of torture and expanded the war in Afghanistan, and invaded Libya, however briefly. The list of his "broken campaign promises" (i.e. lies) is growing longer by the day. Banksters and Wall Streeters continue to reign unimpeded, and wealth continues to flow upwards from the less economically advantaged to accumulate in the pockets of the already wealthy. The already wealthy, whose ranks include the President.
When do we STOP believing that OBAMA is anything but a Neocon elitist in sheep's clothing? That he has been a dissembling manipulator in what he said to get himself elected vs. what he has done?
There is ONE JOB we have to do - DUMP OBAMA IN THE PRIMARIES. Check this link out:

This situation will not change until we all get together and demand it. The political/corporate alliance keeps pushing…and pushing… and pushing. The rising tide in the streets that I witnessed in NYC on two occasions last week, (Monday and Saturday), seems to be growing. The truth is finally getting through and people are pissed off. We have to use this momentum and accomplish something with it. Just getting Obama the sellout in again isn’t going to help us at all. We have to stop buying what the marketing mechanisms are dishing out, both politically and economically. We also have to learn how to shape the dialogue like the right-wing is doing now. If we force them to see us that is the first step. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

Everyone got their popcorn? This is political theater coming from both sides of the isle. I think we've seen this one before though. It's the one where half the country is duped into believing the Republicans care about the deficit and the other half is duped into believing that the Democrats really care about, but are just too weak to help the people because that Republican Kryptonite is just... too... powerful!
* Spoiler Alert *
The act pays off and bad guys end up winning by successfully doing whatever they want while dividing the people against itself.
Don't forget to watch the previews too -- I've heard that the sequel is going to follow the exact same pattern.

The inspiration, the excitement, the feeling of hope and change, has all but disappeared! With every decision Obama makes, we seem to lose! So how much should we lose before we ask ourselves the real question, do we really want 4 more years of the tail wagging the dog or do we need a different candidate? Someone who would stand up to the American terrorist party! For those who say Obama is a liberal or a progressive, I say you're 100% incorrect! Obama is a conservative Bluedog Dem who leans to the right of center. Every social program is under attack and I'm fearful our elected President is all to willing to give away anything to the right when they demand it! Education and speeches are good! Education, speeches and a spine is better! Yes! I voted for Obama in 2008, I walk door to door, I gave what I could. Will I do it again? I'll say it again! Where are the incentives to eliminate outsourcing of American industry and jobs?
Where are the higher trade tariffs on imported products that were made here just 10 years ago?Why are we still in Iraq and Afghanistan? Bush borrowed the money from China for his wars and Obama, with the help of the heartless in Congress, now want to pay for it off of the backs of the elderly and future generations.
Why aren't the crooks who ripped off America behind bars and sleeping with Bubba?
Why isn't Obama or Congress talking about opening the oil reserves to help lower the high cost of fuel? No, can't do that! It would disrupt the profit flow the oil industry is making!
Unemployment funds! Five months down with eight remaining before Obama and the Dem's offer social benefits to cover those in need. When the funds end, the Republicans will vote against adding more funds unless tax reductions for the wealthy are made permanent or SS is eliminated or given to Wall Street! Millions of 99ers are still out of work or were forced to accept those minimum wage jobs with no benefits, days off, or safety conditions, and have little chance of getting ahead. You know, the jobs the kids did during summer vacation! Where is the change Obama? Where is the hope? Where are the decent jobs Boehner?

All he has to do is say is that he agrees 100% with Ryan's Budget, the GOP will then say they are against it.
Seriously though, I hope the President has learn his lesson on how to negotiate. Or get someone in his Administration that does. Using some strong arm tactics wouldn't hurt at this point. He got to start fighting for the middle class. He also has got to make it clear to America that Ryan's Budget will pass on the burden to those that can least afford it. Use that Bully Pulpit! It is ironic that you suggest Obama could propose a Bolivian idea being so that Obama himself cut off aid [climate] to Bolivia and Ecuador just because they refuse to sign on the Copenhagen Environmental accord, which they saw as detrimental to their own modest survival interests.
This US president, just as past ones, is just a puppet of an apparatus that is driven by the forces of greed and power-hungry, coldblooded reptiles whose only well-being that counts is their own.
Obama totally missed his opportunity of becoming a positive historical leader of this nation and instead has become just a mediocre president who failed miserably to people who had the greatest ILLUSIONS and expectations about his ability and willingness to change the course of this country.
And it is too late for him to change. If he begins [again] to whisper sweet things in your ear and shows you cute and clever slogans, do not believe any; it's probably just re-election time.

Obama has no problem standing up for what he wants to. The reason he isn't standing up to the GOP is because conceding to them actually advances Obama's true agenda, as well.
He would not be in the Oval Office today if he was a wimp and unable to take a stand.
The only other alternative is that he gives in because it suits his own agenda.
Truly, the Obama administration is simply Bush's 3rd administration. A vote for Obama in 2012 is a vote for a Bush 4th administration.

Here's a thought I have had for some time but dared not speak....
I became politicly aware when Kennedy was shot. Then his brother Bobby and soon after MLK. If the corporate powers that be in this country thought for one minute that Obama was really going to bring real progressive change he would not be alive today.
Today we are dealing with a serious nation wide cult called the republican party who will stop at nothing to get and hold power.
Obama is no real threat to them. They know it, Obama knows it and more and more Americans are beginning to know it.
It will NEVER be Obama who leads us to the promised land.
No one is more sorry to say this then I because I voted for him and foolishly, for a brief moment when he won, I believed in that "hope & change".
Now, I don't think any of us alive today will ever live long enough to see the end of this new fascist America. I feel so sorry for our children for the world we have left them.

Expect another depression because the middle class is getting gutted to make the rich richer. They hoard their money and there won't be any dollars flowing into the economy. Obama will continue to cave and pave the way to economy killing Rep agenda. Call him "Herbert Hoover Obama." I like what Keith Olbermann said at his site about the debt ceiling. "April 10, 2011
Republicans are expected to demand fundamental changes in policy on health care, the environment, abortion rights and more, as the price of their support for raising the debt ceiling (New York Times)Answer: Give them nothing. Obama has done very little that appeals to mainstream America. His liberal agenda died when America voted out a Democrat controlled House. Now he's about keeping his job. He's turning right and pissing off the left. This is what happens when a person stands for himself rather than his principles. He may win re-election but he'll be dealing with an all Republican Congress. Then he'll really piss off the left. What else can you expect from a guy whose favorite vote was "present" earlier in his political life rather than taking a stand.

Do you realize what a nice distraction that was while Obama was planning and getting ready to commit ground troops to Libya?
Obama was in on it, too. Come on. He's POTUS. He's aggressive enough and slick enough to lie us into Libya...and he can't stand up to an orange-tanned drunk like Boehner?

I dont' know if its a lack of a spine that the problem. I think he's doing what he's inclined to do anyway. He had already lost before the discussion had even really started. By allowing the repubs to limit the discussion to discretionary spending only, he allowed them to rule any substantive cuts to anything like defense.

With all do respect, Mr. President, send in the Congressional Progressives to negotiate. They have a plan, The People's Plan, that is fair, balanced, will not cause bankrupcy for corporations, or poverty for millionaires, and actually benefits the entire country.

Neither did Pelosi and Reid when they had control. The Republicans only control half of Congress. Blame Obama for not being able to lead. Obama was on tv ad nauseum the first eighteen months of his presidency. The going (oil, North Africa, economy) got tough and the guy is hiding under his desk.
May I remind everyone the 2011 budget should have been passed last fall. The 2011 year started October 1, 2010. The Democrats were in complete control. But they passed a continuing resolution because they knew if they passed their budget a majority of America would have been pissed off. They would be swept out of Washington. It happened to the House anyway.

Proud of my dissent...I voted for him, got others to vote for him, worked for his campaign and have been betrayed.
If you can stop walking in lock-step for a second you may come to the same conclusion.
Most of the people I know who are still Obama devotees have the same thing in common; the obsessive need to be right. - 1 year ago

I think I'm gonna have follow you -- I voted and campaigned for him, and got others to vote for him and I am just so upset with him I can't even talk about it! And it took a long time for me to reach this point because I was proud of myself for actually getting involved in a presidential race, and yes it's true, I really didn't want to think that I had been wrong :-(

I don't need to be right, but I know if a republican takes the white house this country will be in another mess. Look at what happened to the states when they changed parties. I just don't believe any president should be disrespected with ugly pictures, whatever party.I do know the point you were making. Should have just thought a while and let it alone. So many believed when he took office everything would change. I was not one of them. I knew it would take time and even he would not have an easy time. I wish he would do some things different, but he did not take an easy job. I shudder at what we would have if McCain had won.

The president has forgotten the ones that has got him where he's at. He needs to start being a leader, and stand up to the Republicans. If he agrees with them then we need some one else
