Situation dire in Libya as AU arrives in Tripoli to press for cease-fire

Aimee_Kligman
On Sunday afternoon, a delegation of African Union leaders arrived in Tripoli to meet with Muammar Qaddafi to urge the Libyan leader to stop military action against rebel factions. They indicated that they would also meet with the Transitional National Council in Benghazi to request an end to all hostilities.

AU members who were granted permission by NATO to land in Tripoli are South Africa's Jacob Zuma, Mali's Amadou Toumani Toure, Democratic Republic of Congo's Denis Sassou Nguessou and Uganda's Yoweri Museveni. They are all considered to be dictators in their respective countries. As they landed in the capital, they were greeted with a red carpet, but also with signs which called for no foreign intervention.

Qaddafi enjoys considerable support from the African Union, which he chaired two years ago, thus making it doubtful that the rebels would accept the AU as an unbiased broker. Current AU leader Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema slammed foreign intervention in the matter of Libya, calling it an internal problem. On the other hand, the anti-Qaddafi forces, the U.S. the EU and NATO have agreed that Qaddafi has to leave office
