Food chain breach: radioactive sludge used for fertilizer on farms

Has the whole world gone stark raving mad? Well, if not the whole world, at least the part that handles U.S. environmental regulation.
The news that radioactive material is being used for fertilizer on the farms that produce our vegetables and milk (among other food products) should make even the most permissive pro-industry segments of the American public exceedingly uncomfortable. Radiation outside the food chain – in rivers, for example – is one level of risk, but radiation contamination in the food chain is a much more serious and insidious threat to public health.
This latest bombshell comes from NYT reporter Ian Urbina, who focuses on Pennsylvania environmental regulators in his most recent story on the fracking industry, saying they are “…calling for waste treatment plants and drinking water facilities to increase testing for radioactive pollutant and other contaminants, to see whether they are ending up in rivers because of the growth of natural gas drilling in the state.”
Again, radioactive material in our rivers is a huge concern that needs to be addressed by both lawmakers and regulators, however, another even more urgent issue is that sludge from waste water treatment plants is being used for fertilizer in a kind of “land farming” process run amok (or, I should say, further amok). Land farming is one way industry tries to dispose of radioactive waste – not by removing it but by incorporating it into surface soil and tilling it to aerate the mixture. Unfortunately, the process removes neither the radiation nor the threat, it simply dilutes the density of the pollutants. And radium 226 – one of the radioactive isotopes contained in fracking waste water – has a half-life of more than 1,600 years, so the risk remains with us across generations.
One very real health threat is bio-accumulation, where you begin with radiation in soil that can be absorbed by grasses that are then consumed by farm animals (like cattle) that are in turn consumed by humans. Cows’ milk is immediately and closely monitored when radiation has been detected in an area, because the cows eat the contaminated grass and the radiation shows up (usually very quickly) in the milk they produce. Just like grasses, vegetables can become contaminated when grown in soil containing radioactive material, which presents another direct line to human ingestion.
Another point that needs to be considered is that low-level radiation, which can be blocked by our skin, can wreak havoc if it gets inside our bodies. Both government and industry officials often lump internal and external exposures together, treating them in much the same way as far as health risks go. In reality, internal exposure, even at low levels, is extremely dangerous while low-level external exposure – like x-rays and CT scans – is less of a concern. For more than 20 years, I have been suing the oil and gas industry for damages associated with radioactive waste, and I can assure you that ingested (internal) radiation poses a grave health risk at virtually any level. There is no safe limit for internal exposure. You won’t hear this from official sources, but the inhalation of one particle of plutonium or uranium can, and does, cause lung cancer. Devastating, but true.
Under pressure from the EPA – pressure coming in the wake of Mr. Urbina’s reporting – Pennsylvania regulators say they sent letters requiring new testing to 14 public water authorities while contacting another 25 wastewater plants, “…requesting that those with older permits ‘voluntarily’ begin testing for radium, uranium and other pollutants.”

This is nothing new, they've been doing it with toxic coal ash for a long time...
http://www.coal-ash-spill.com/news/2010/01/20/why-is-toxic-coal-ash-used-to-fert...
It’s a win-win situation, says the government. Coal ash helps loosen and fertilize soil for the farmers, and it helps reduce a waste disposal issue for the coal-firing plants.
That coal ash is a synthetic form of the mineral gypsum, produced by power plant “scrubbers” that remove sulfur dioxide from the smoke stack emissions. The chalky substance also contains mercury, arsenic, lead and other heavy metals that have been linked to serious health problems, like cancer, liver damage and neurological complications.
So why scatter toxic ash over the fruits and vegetables we eat? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says the toxins are in such small amounts that they aren’t harmful to crops or humans. That’s hardly reassuring news considering a year ago coal ash wasn’t classified as a hazardous material, and plants that stored coal ash waste weren’t subject to federal inspections.
It wasn’t until the wall of a coal ash impoundment pond at a Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) plant in east Tennessee broke, sending a wave of coal ash onto a nearby community, that the government began to take a closer look at the waste produced by power plants. It found that coal ash contained higher levels of toxins that originally thought and was in fact dangerous to humans.

I apologize for attempting to bring some humor to such a serious subject.
Witnessing the meltdowns of numerous ecosystems and seeing it coming for the past 30 years has put me in a state of depression that I can only describe as hell.
It just gets worse every day and we are doing NOTHING about it bedsides talk.
I actually understand why most people are in total denial.
I certainly wish I didn't know what I know if ignorance is truly bliss.
The only thing that gives me a little hope are the alternative scenarios -- like an unexpected ice age to slap us back into reality, or a solar flare in 2012 to do the same.
Please accept my deepest faith that nature's spirit will always prevail.
But I seriously doubt it will involve humans getting their sorry act together. - 1 year ago

What a decent thing to do, even though you didn't have to apologize. I think we're all stressed and frightened and feeling hopeless, and so nobody's able to break away and laugh at any of this. And that's just how bad it all really is.
It took guts to try to give us a smile, and it took a ton of guts to be able to so beautifully explain your own feelings.
I think it's too late for humans, and that breaks my heart, because not ALL humans are filled with greed and a lack of compassion, but those humans who control everything (plus "average" humans who just don't THINK, so use and abuse), are the reason humans will die out a lot sooner than I ever thought possible. It's painful to think about.
Thank you for sticking it out and writing... and sharing some hope, as well.

You mean the Koch brothers don't self regulate their business and aren't concerned about anything but their bank accounts? The same corporations that are spending billions on reducing government regulations? Well, I am shocked and appalled. (HUGE pile of sarcasm).
This is exactly why I only eat organic foods that are grown in my area!!! Everything else, I assumed, was laced with corn syrup, chemicals, and god knows what else. Glad to see I was correct in my assumption. There is a reason so many people are dying of cancer!!!

Stand up and say these practices are unethical and shouldn't be done just for some corporation's bottom line, or in other words, greed.

Unfortunately many can't stand up because they are sick. We need to stop natural gas fracking. It is killing us. It is bad enough they are toxifying our water, but our soil? It is heartbreaking and outrageous. And natural gas is actually one of the "clean" energy sources this administration keeps referring to? How can anyone possibly think it is a clean energy source? I agree with you wholeheartedly that we must stand up to this for our children as corny as that may sound to some. I've written, I've called and I've signed petitions to my local politicians on this. I believe there is a moratorirum on fracking in NY, and I hope it spreads to other states. We simply cannot continue on this road.

There is a good reason why cancer was almost unheard 100 years ago. Now radioactive waste and contamination is so much a part of our society and the public is just starting to figure it out thanks to Japan. The radioactive particles have long half lives.
Now for the obvious, unless you are involved in an accident, every damn one of you on here is going to die of cancer from breathing in and eating small particles of Cesium, iodine, plutonium, , that have been amassing in your surroundings since 20th century and greatly increased in concentration thanks to mass releases from fuckedshima which now adds radioactive strontium-90 to the list. . (YES strontium-90 has been introduced into the environment.)

And with EPA budget cuts (if Republicans had the Senate, EPA would be gone altogether), who exactly is going to see to all this, along with everything else crying out for its attention? So many have advocated natural gas as a clean energy source, but among its other features we find it contributes to radiation in our food and water and tap water that you can light on fire! Fracking should be banned.

Cleanest area to live? I'm glad you asked that question. They say the worst pollutants are in our home but you can change that. That's a rule you need not be bound by. Grow some plants, get some good filter devices that have infrared, or is it ultraviolet? One of em kills germs.
Then cut a hole in your bedroom door or wall and put a fan in the hole pushing air in, which raises the air pressure (psi) in the bedroom and you health will increase dramatically. That's because the raised air pressure will be pressing more of the plant's O2 into your lung capillaries/alveoli.

Science is indiscriminate to whom it takes care of and it is not self serving. People who fund scientific advancements might be, and often are, self serving and discriminate, but science is not. Science is what we discover in an attempt to understand and shape the reality we exist within. Science is purely neutral with no interest of self preservation or philosophy of it's own. You want a perfect example of how science is not self serving, look at Jonas Salk who invented the first vaccination for Polio. What self serving element was exhibited by science there?
Well, science is in part responsible for the rescue of people trapped on the roofs of tall burning buildings. Without helicopters people in that situation would have a much greater risk of death. Science has given us the understanding of antibiotics, which has "swooped" in and saved millions of lives. Science has increased our life expectancies and has saved countless people who would otherwise die from; heart attacks, appendicitis, cancer, broken bones, infections, blunt force trauma, malnutrition, genetic or inherited disorders, etc. Meanwhile, if you look at the bible, God is directly accredited for killing more, much... MUCH more, people than the devil. And how many people is God directly accredited for actually saving? And in the Bible, why does God kill most of the people he kills, is it because they no longer worship him? If so, then it seems that God is interested in taking care of God.
By the way, as to the "discussion" we were having on the thread, "Catholic group claims children raped by priests were 'homosexual' participants, not victims," I have one last thing to add to the last comment I made.
My last comment was, "The next implied question to be answered is if you will actually address the question of Kennedy that I have posed (that is called standing your ground), or will you ignore it and make other impromptu remarks about things you have no reasonable knowledge about and/or of? ( And that is called running away)"
It would seem that you just proverbially walked away. Unless you want to continue or concede the point, just walking away is also "running away."

Gravity_Man:
But the movie I, Robot with Will Smith the hero, the movie actually contained TWO MAIN HEROES. The 2nd hero was in the robots. All the robots were considered tame & stupid, like people want to think of Jehovah's Witnesses, robot-brains. But I, Robot was showing us their fear that one day one of the robots (from amongst their JW ranks) would get real SMART.
Perhaps start inventing new fantastic engine systems that do not pollute at all eh? Then the sentient JW walks up on the hill and all the other JW's look to him to become the same way, and then hmm, a lake inversion can occur where the robots become the dominant life form on the planet, over the human who has disdained and even sometimes hated them.
Such is the way with discrimination.
Did I ever tell you guys about my "dry waterwheel" that can produce electric power out in Outer Space and make interplanetary space travel possible for everyone, even the Old?
Yep, it replaces round water molecules with round metal balls much like an arcade pinball machine. Two electrical solenoids in the center fire the balls in opposite directions so there is NO RECOIL (lost energy). I think I've told you about it before.
Okay, so how about this one? A car engine that operates just like an artificial heart and would breathe New Life into Mankind. Instead of just being another marshmallow puff-puff-wheeze tired compressed air engine it adds heated steam to the cylinder ahead of the liquid air to create a TORNADO-LEVEL WIND ENGINE.
You do understand the awesome power in a tornado, right?
