Police were called at 1:19 p.m. by a 911 call from a witness at the scene.
Alexander M. Huppert, a freshman university studies major, then assaulted an officer who approached to check his welfare, according to a police press release. After a short struggle with the officer and several witnesses, he was taken into custody.
The incident took place near a table promoting a local version of “Ask an Atheist Day.” The student group Freethinkers at Virginia Tech sponsored the table.
Witnesses said Huppert stood near the table for nearly an hour. Approaching the table, Huppert borrowed a pen and drew a circle with a cross inside on the back of his hand.
Nicole Schrand, a senior psychology major, said Huppert then asked students at the table to stab him in the cross with the pen to “prove to us God existed.” The students declined.
“We don’t believe in assaulting people,” Schrand said. “We’re very against assaulting people.”
Huppert then asked for the pen back, a request Schrand and other students declined. Seeing another pen, Huppert grabbed it and began stabbing himself in the back of the hand.
“If it had been a more streamlined pen, I would have expected it to go through,” Schrand said.
Wade Duvall, who was also working at the table, walked away from the table to call police. Duvall, a graduate student studying physics, first called the Tech Police non-emergency number.
“They told me to hang up and call 911,” Duvall said.
Tyler Pease, a freshman communication major, intervened when he saw Huppert attempting to stab himself in the wrist. Pease, a member of Campus Crusade for Christ, convinced Huppert into giving him the pen.
Schrand said Huppert attempted to confront Duvall after seeing him on the phone, but several people at the table stood between the two.
Duvall said an officer showed up in less than a few minutes. He said Huppert did not cooperate with the officer’s command to take his hands out of his pocket.
Duvall said Huppert then “smacked” the officer on the scene. In the resulting struggle, the officer called for assistance to apprehend Huppert.
“He kept calling for help,” Duvall said. “So I joined.”
Duvall initially grabbed Huppert’s arm. Pease also assisted in subduing Huppert. With additional officers responding, Huppert was taken into custody.
“I was shaking after it was over,” Duvall said.
Pease said the incident ended “better than I expected.”
“As soon as he started hurting himself I was thinking to myself this could go really, really badly," Pease said.
Onlookers were surprised at how quickly the situation escalated.
“I didn’t realize what was going on until police subdued him,” said Brenda Hawkinson, who observed the incident. Hawkinson described Huppert as “glassy-eyed.”
The release said that while in custody Huppert broke out a police car window and assaulted two other officers. None of the officers’ injuries required medical attention, and no other individuals were injured during the incident.
Huppert was charged with three counts of felony assault on a police officer, as well as charges of resisting arrest and destruction of property.
He was processed and transferred to Montgomery County Jail, where he is being held without bond.
The report said the investigation was still ongoing.
Schrand said the incident was not “what we were hoping would happen” during the event. Schrand noted the desire to remain polite during the event.
“We did not try to be offensive ever,” Schrand said.
Pease commended the group for having a “very open dialogue” during the event.

And "look look at my ears WTF you think my ears evolved this way from inbreeding ? NO only god would do this to me all the inbreeding has nothing to do with it". Winning! Perhaps I'm incorrect, but it seems to me that current.com has dwindled into a combination tabloid/mainstream Ist-ist "left" website.
So many of the stories in the top 10 list are either clearly being perpetuated by what passes in the mainstream as "Left," but is really just partisan hackery. And I've watched the comments section become a forum for back-slapping congratulatory reassurance that name-calling and gleeful badge-wearing is acceptable behavior, so long as the name-caller identifies as "Democrat."
It bums me out to see the potential of this site become just another sell-out to socially acceptable, pre-fabricated political identity.
I suppose, that in my ideal world, we could all speak our minds and have actual, reasonable discussions WITHOUT so easily or immediately capitulating to the safe, predictable, boring boxes of officially sanctioned sociopolitical identity.

I don't see a general consensus of believers being of sub par intellect. Crazy, and sub par intellect are not mutually exclusive. Problem is, the more people fall back on the translation of a translation of a translation of the writings of people who thought the earth was the center of the universe and that heavier objects fell faster than lighter objects among other things - the more those people are less equipped to handle REALITY.

Itsbatman_Durr:
People don't chose their skin tones(usually), they don't chose to be born in a certain part of the world, or a certain gender. They do however - chose to believe whatever they chose to believe. That is definitely within the fair boundaries for being picked on. A black person doesn't chose to be black, picking on them for being black would be wrong. A white boy dresses up like he's from the hood, changes his pronunciations so as to impersonate someone of a inner city upbringing - that is called a choice - and that is fair game for ridicule. A person choses to believe in a giant sexually charged rabbit that will save all who believe in him - that person is fair game for ridicule. You change that rabbit to whatever else you want to call it - it's still a belief and belief is fair game for ridicule. You can chose to believe nonsense, you can chose to believe in evidence - your choice.
When my child makes up funny fantasy stories he believes are true, I don't mock him - he's a kid. He has every right to live in his imagination right now. When an adult wants to join in a conversation and bring to the table fantasy as an "alternative" to evidence and facts - it's like bringing an 8oz water gun to a bazooka fight. Then you want the bazooka holding players to not laugh at the guy who brought an 8oz water gun....

A great man once said, " Do not believe a spiritual teaching just because: 1. it is repeatedly recited, 2. it is written in a scripture, 3. it was handed from guru to disciple, 4. everyone around you believes it, 5. it has supernatural qualities, 6. it fits my beliefs anyway, 7. it sounds rational to me, 8. it is taught by a respectable person, 9. it was said to be the truth by the teacher, 10. one must defend it or fight for it. However, only when it agrees with your experience and reason, and when it is conducive to the good and gain of oneself and all others, then one should accept the teachings, and live up to them."

"Attack an Atheist Day"? WTF? There are plenty of good Christians out there, but there are some just so whacked that they think murder and mayhem are displays of faith. Burning Korans, blowing up abortion centers, slavery, they think that somehow, this is all justified if they can find some passage in the Bible that can be made to explain it; however loosely.
