One story gaining momentum in the mainstream media is the country's rising gas prices and the effect it might have on President Obama's popularity with the 2012 election around the corner. But is there something else at work here? There's no shortage of articles lamenting the average price of gasoline jumping nearly 30 cents in the past month, but take a look at the average price of gasoline over the past 3 years.

According to GasBuddy.com, gas prices peaked somewhere around $4.12/gallon in August 2008, a period that coincides with the final months of the Bush administration. In mid-September, with the presidential election six weeks away, average gas prices plummeted a whopping $2.50 to a low of $1.61/gallon at the end of the year with the Obama administration preparing to take control. Prices rebounded about $1 a gallon to roughly $2.60/gallon over the next six months, but while the Democrats controlled the House, Senate, and the White House, average gas prices fluctuated roughly 25 cents/gallon for the next 15 months (between $2.60 and $2.85/gallon) until the first week of November 2010. Then, lo and behold, the Republicans took control of the house, and virtually overnight gas prices began to rise again to where they are now. Is it any coincident that prices plummeted just before the presidential election (with an incumbant republican president and a struggling candidate needing a boost) and then suddenly increase the Republican caucus (bent on making Obama a one-term president) takes control of the House? There's a word for it--manipulation--and it's propogated by Wall Street speculators who always seem to enjoy life on the hog a whole lot more when a Republican is in the White House. So if you're ready to fall in line and blame Obama next time you fill up, take a good look at the historical information and then ask who you are going to believe--the beltway media or your lying eyes?

    • Interesting. But maybe we can all undermine the underminers by buying hybrids and electrics. A city councilman in Chicago proposed discounting city auto stickers for more fuel efficient cars. Electrics pay nothing, hybrids get a discount and gasoline only cars would see a hike in sticker prices.
