On Sunday, Alaa and Gamal Mubarak, sons of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, were questioned by Egyptian prosecutors at the infamous Tora Prison rather than the prosecutor's general office, citing security concerns.
On Tuesday, Mr. Mubarak and his two sons were detained following allegations of corruption, abuse of power, and illegal gain to the tune of US$700 million. It is not clear where Hosni Mubarak is being held, as there were conflicting reports placing him in a hospital at both Sharm-el-Sheik and Cairo.
Gamal Mubarak was head of the ruling National Democratic Party, and as such, is accused of having used his power to order security police to open fire on demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square in late January. Other matters of import under interrogation include the illegal export of gold from Egypt, forcing agents of foreign companies to give them shares as the mandatory Egyptian partner, and their involvement in the privatization of public sector companies.
