Antigay Okla. Lawmaker Makes Racist Remarks

Image
TimALoftis
Sally Kern, the Republican state representative from Oklahoma who compared LGBT people to terrorists and cancer, has turned her attacks toward African Americans as her state debates whether to end affirmative action.

Both houses of the state legislature have approved a constitutional amendment that would eliminate affirmative action in state government. The proposal is headed to the voters for consideration in 2012.

According to Tulsa World, Kern said minorities “earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.”

She said, “We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school? I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”

A self-styled martyr, Kern authored a new book, The Stoning of Sally Kern, and suggested that LGBT activists were to blame for disappointing sales.

    • “earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.” i've worked in banks & rehab centers & in my observational experience, it's the rich white kids who lack initiative, remain unemployed & maintain high account balances transfered from their parents accounts regularly.

she reminds me of the anti-drugs cop who came to one of my college classes to tell us about the dangers of drugs. he mentioned he had 3 failed marriages, one 18-yr-old high school drop out & a 1 year old granddaughter at home. okay, tell me all about the dangers of drugs mr.officer, if i can point out the social unrest you wrought.

    • Sally Kern is neck and neck in the insanity department with Louisiana State Rep. John Labruzzo (R) who has entered a bill supporting feticide: several of the component parts are:

1.) women who have abortions and doctors who perform abortions will be sentenced to 15 years hard labour (no abortions for any reason)
2.) pay poor women $1000.00 to have fallopian tubes tied
3.) grant tax incentives for college educated, higher income couples to have more children

It certainly seems that the invasion of the body snatchers has been completed and we are witnessing the rising of a neo-nazi Phoenix...

I mean, for a start you can tell that she's patently psychotic, delusional, disconnected from reality, and pretty damn paranoid. Is it really safe for someone like that to be walking the streets?

    • If the people she talked to actually stated that they didn't study hard because they thought the gov would take care of them that is not racism on her part. She is relating a conversation. I think affirmative action should be done away with. It is racist in itself. To continue it under the guise of correcting racism does not pass the logic test, or any other test for that matter.

Just once I would like a conservative/republican to say.. this is disgusting. She should be ashamed of herself. But no, defend, defend, defend... no matter what ugly thing a republican says other republicans make excuses.

Ya know, you can still be a card carrying republican and point out when they say stupid shit. Would it kill you? Seriously, one freaking time!

If the conversation took place, if, if, if... what she said was racist and hateful. Period. Why is it so hard to say that?

This drives me insane too. I keep testing my righty with stories I see/hear on news or here and it's always, "I'd have to know the context" or something similar, even though the context is very clear. When a lefty says something wrong or stupid, I and most here are perfectly willing to call them on it. He did find to closing of the teen mothers' school in Detroit counterproductive, but there's a world of wrong out there that just gets a pass. For them, it's party first, no matter how boneheaded or evil.

I think the important point has been made, that no republican has distanced themselves from some of this hate, but I'd just make the argument that no politician, regardless of their views, should allow themselves the lack of intellectual rigor to make such a general statement about ANY topic without looking at cause. It's their job to look at things a bit more deeply than that, relying on a subjective observation as the alpha and omega (excuse the religious pun) of their arguments. I'll leave the fact that, living and working in a predominantly "working class" neighborhood, I see people of color, especially young people, busting their asses in ways that make me ashamed of my own complacency, out. It is the subtext of her saying that there's no reason to try to get kids of color more involved that gets me. I agree affirmative action in the long run does damage society by maintaining racial distinctions, but it was and is an important measure to counteract the very real racism that people like this represent in positions of power.

It was extremely easy to choose between one of the smartest presidential candidates in history, than old John McCain, and Sarah Palin a brain-dead opportunist..
Obama is classified as a genius, McCain is a flip-flopping war-monger, and Sarah Palin is just plain stupid.
You Tea Baggers/Republicans are the political party that is begging, borrowing, and stealing from the, elderly, sick, disabled, mentally-challenged, children,etc..Just to give to the top 2%..If that isn't redistributing wealth, I don't know what is..
Contrary to your allegation that Blacks voted for Obama because he was/is Black, but other Blacks ran before, and they were not supported by the majority of Black voters..The majority of White voters always vote for White candidates primarily because they are White..Who is the last Black candidate that you supported for president?
So, in other words, Bush and McCain supporters are smart, and Obama's supporters are dumb and lazy..
You have a difficult time identifying a racist or racism, because you have that mentality..
If you are not a part of the solution, you are the problem!

She said she was a teacher for 20 years and her black students were lazy. Did she ever think that maybe she was a lousy teacher? They obviously had to know her true feelings toward them. What a waste of a human life.

    • (Diclaimer: I am a gay man trapped in a womans body and I am only half Black.)

Who does this ignorant, b**tch think she is. She has isulted 1/2 of my heritage and made me ashamed of the other half. Why do some white people think that black people don't work hard. My Father was a carpenter and worked hard every day of his life to care for his family. He came from a large family where my Grandfather worked every day and his young school age sons did odd jobs to help support the family. My Brother workes hard every day on the line at Chrysler and by the way b**tch he holds two bachelors degrees one in Anthropology and one in History from Western Michigan University. I got my first job when I was 15 years old. I worked for 17 years as a civil servent and held a full-time job while attending college. I graduated from Henery Ford Community College Phi Theta Kappa, Cum Laude and from the University of Michigan-Dearborn with distinction. I hold a Bachelors of Fine Art in Art History and Art History Museum Science. I have taught school, and I recently recieved a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Interior Design from The International Academy of Design and Technology-Detroit where I made honors 4 times. So please DO NOT TELL ME that people of color are lazy and don't work hard.

If you would look at the history of our country it was the Black slaves who worked the fields and cared for the homes and children of the rich White masters. The last time I checked those were not plush easy jobs. The history of our country shows us that Americans were supressed economically, socially, and educationally for YEARS. And it still goes on today because people like Sally Kern believe the old steriotypes. If you take job seekers with the exact same credentials but with some of the applicants having "black" sounding names the applicants who had "whiter" sounding names got the job. "Study Suggests Bias Against "Black" Sounding Names" by Bill Lonard
      http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m3495/is_2_48/ai_97873146/

I too had the pleasure of teaching and I can tell you that the "lazy student" lable covers all ethnicities. And when I ask a student why they did not do their work I was never told that it was so that the "govrnment could take care of them." I would never let a person liker her teach my child. Someone who is so close minde and stupid has no right to call themself a teacher. So please Sally Kern do us all a favor and retire fom public life so that we do not have to suffer your igorance an bigotry.

Does all he can to keep women in their place, but has no idea that women need to work to support their families. Hasn't got a clue that most poor women need planned parenthood for many different reasons. So does it surprise about this woman? NO! Probably the way she was brought up, and has not evolved. And I might add, that she never will.

She was probably dragged into it kicking and screaming. I seriously doubt that the children didn't want to study as hard, but more likely that this steaming pile wasn't a motivator of education. • Can somebody explain to me how people like this can possibly stay in office? We need to get rid of every one of these republicans at the ballot box! They need to be voted out in mass for a couple decades!! Maybe then they will learn that Americans have had enough of their bigotry and racism! IT'S TIME AMERICA to support a country dedicated to Equality for ALL and total intolerance of people like this Kern woman and her sick message. I believe that states that keep voting in these bigots should be boycotted in any way possible. Any business that operates in the state should be boycotted. Tourism should be boycotted. Every state that sends one of these lying bigots to congress should not receive any federal help what so ever. If residents of these states want to live with the kind of laws these people and the likes of Scott Walker should be allowed to and be required to have special ID cards to leave their state AND HAVE TO SHOW THEIR LONG FORM BIRTH CERTIFICATE for every transaction! ! In fact, build fenses around the state to keep them in! OK OK...I know this is all over the top..but it's sure fun thinking about it. : )

Not that I believed there was no racism, but that is it is in fact so wide spread. I guess they all moved into the closet until the US elected it's first black President. How Republicans cannot say they are not racist when they don't call these people out is proof that blatant racism exist today.

How the electorate of a State can elect anyone today that is so racist and condone their actions is what still surprises me. The citizens of that State should be ashamed of themselves. How can you people even look yourself in the mirror and think you are upstanding citizens?
