Are drug companies making a marijuana super pill?
What does not make sense to me is that the marijuana plant is deemed as having NO medicinal value by the FDA. Through my research, I found each strain has a different chemical composition which is why we experience different effects with each one. Marijuana is mostly comprised of THC, Cannabinoids, and Flavonoids. THC helps to relieve pain and has psychoactive properties. Cannabinoids have different effects for each type ranging from: pain relief, nausea relief, anxiety relief. One type, CBN, shrinks and kills tumors. Flavonoids are proven to protect against heart disease.
Currently, the drug companies are producing Marinol which is 100% THC. Why does the FDA allow them to make this drug if the plant has no medicinal value? Now, they are trying to synthetically make each type of identified cannabinoid. Their plan is to make several types of pills. Each of which will contain different levels and combinations of THC and Cannabinoids so they can target specific ailments/diseases with each pill.
This brings us to the question which should be presented to the FDA. Why are the drug companies permitted to make Marinol if marijuana is classified as having no medicinal value? Since these drugs are mimicking every element of the marijuana plant why is this plant still illegal? Although you can not patent a plant, you can however patent a process or chemical. As long as this plant remains illegal the drug companies stand to make billions if they can perfect these pills. America deserves to know who's being paid off
Please consider my story.

Mike Dancheck

Marijuana prohibition is a tool for profit and control. It is not and never has been intended for the good of society itself. It's good for corporations and governments. Everyone else suffers for it.
Pharmaceutical companies can suck it. Cannabis is a plant. All you need is nature, not GloboChem. To hell with Pit-Pat!

Our federal agency charged with ensuring our safety against bad drugs has been co-opted by the very ones that they should be protecting us from. In it's natural state herb doesn't harm or have any of the nasty side affects of most man made chemicals. As in most cases it is silly to try to improve on natures gifts.

if they can figure out a way to allow big pharma to make and profit from it and still make the natural plant illegal,,,, then you will see some form of marijuana available to all who need it...

Why do they not legalize the plant? Because it leads to stability, sustainability, and peace. All those characteristics add up to no profit for greedy corporations.

It will never be decriminalized. It's a plant that you can grow easily, why bow down to corporate tyranny when you self medicate yourself from your own creation? Grow your own and administer it with a vaporizer...free the weed.

Hey Dudefromtherock, it's thinking like that that will keep this plant illegal. People like you and me need to speak up for whats right and whats wrong. What's wrong is that large corporations, government officials, lobbyists are proffiting by keeping this plant illegal; And, innocent people are in jail because of a joint. It's much more than just growing for ourselves.....

eClear thinking ......consider that Poppy plants produce opium...opiun produces herion...herion produces oxycodone...oxycodone refines to Oxycotin...
Best selling pain pill legally available......and soooooo addictive and misused.
Both plants Marijuana and poppy's are just that...plants...except marijuana isn't soo
horrific... . current tv made a film called "The Oxycodone Express"...Whata revealing film.As long as this plant remains illegal the drug companies stand to make billions if they can perfect these pills. America deserves to know who's being paid off

ninetyseven: Thanks! The major difference is that in order to make all of those derrivatives from the poppy plant they must have hazzardous chemicals added if I am not mistaken. Marijuana is perfect the way it is. We just need educated people to inform the users what strains will have the effects that they desire.

Marijuana is a political taboo because they declared a war on drugs with marijuana as one of its chief targets , so now amongst older voters especially the negative image has been implanted , those older voters are the most consistent in voting.
Also every politician whoever voted for more tougher sentences or action against marijuana to cater to there base would have to not only have to disappoint there base but admit that they participated in the wasting of valuable resources.
You gotta remember most people dont even know what weed smells like , they have a general idea about drugs that they apply to all of them , my father who used to call it "the dope" told me stories about how he used to read in the paper in england that people used to smoke dope and think they could fly and jump off buildings.
A lotta people have the same view of marijuana that they have of heroin this "all drugs are bad" kinda thinking , they never bothered researching because it was a subject that never interested them.
The last thirty years we've seen police kick in doors and get into shootouts over marijuana so even if they dont have a bad impression of the drug itself all the imagery surrounding it in the media has left a negative impression.

Marijuana's ability to be used as food, fuel, clothing, and medicine makes it the perfect plant to patent. It's literally worth billions (trillions?). Because every gene and purpose is destined for international corporate control, like Marinol, I sadly see it remaining widely illegal for the peasants to cultivate it.

Nice article, just one question. Is it true that Marinol could be bought and sold legally, even while marijuana itself is still illegal and even in states that don't sanction medical marijuana?

Yes it is true Jeremy, There is a great big controversy with the populace I have talk to in why have marijuana when Marinol can be prescribed? The lack of knowledge is so mind boggling that you get a mental stutter. But yes, in Oregon it is legal.

Excellent! This is total hypocrisy and corruption to allow big pharma to patent a pill based on a plant they not only say has no medicinal value, but they actually target as a primary object in the War on Drugs... I don't understand how this is possible to create a second schedule to allow "plant derivatives" to be manufactured for medicinal use under a lower schedule than the very same compound specified under schedule one.
They need to just remove it and legalize it, fuck the pharma co's!!
In addition to Marinol which has already been approved, the FDA has started clinical trials of Sativex, an oral spray which has already been approved for use in Europe. Sativex is nothing more than a cannabis tincture in a spray bottle and they are expected to create a special scheduling for it to allow it's production and use while leaving THC as a schedule one in it's natural form... what a load of BS!!!
Marinol and Sativex are fundamentally different in that Marinol is actually a synthetic form of THC, and Sativex is actually the natural extract from the plant. Marinol has already been proven far less effective than natural cannabis because it is a synthetic form of only one of the many beneficial compounds found in the plant. Sativex offers a natural and controllable product to be prescribed, but this flies in the face of everything our government has been trying to tell us in order to defend Cannabis/THC schedule one status.
They are making a special exception for the pharmaceutical companies to create a high priced product that otherwise would be cheap and affordable, not to mention completely safe to use even in its natural raw form.

Thank you for taking time to read my article and provide such a great response. I am also familiar with Sativex and should have included that in my original article as well. The FDA must be stopped or at least forced to answer these questions.
Cheers!
