    • Osama Bin Laden's Compound Already Mapped on Google
      By Nicholas Jackson
Less than an hour ago, President Obama addressed the nation in a special press conference held to announce the death of Osama Bin Laden. The September 11 mastermind was hiding out in a mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan, about 80 miles north of Islamabad.

Bin Laden's compound is just north, as you can see below, of a hospital for women and children and a cinema. About 800 feet to the west is the Cantt Police Station. There's little information available about the station online, but a Flickr photo taken in February 2007 shows it in rough condition. The station, at that time, was "included in the demolition list of the provincial government works department," the caption claims.

It's unclear who added the hideout to Google Maps or when, but it's already there -- and labeled as an "amusement park."

    • Speaking from the East Room of the White House, the President said that American forces -- with the help of the Pakistanis -- killed bin in a firefight at a compound in Abottabad, Pakistan. Obama said that that shortly after he took office, he ordered CIA Director Leon Panetta to make it the Agency's top priority to bring bin Laden to justice. And last August, Obama said, U.S. intelligence obtained a lead on bin Laden's whereabouts and have been following it ever since.
OBAMA: It took many months to run this thread to ground. Finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action and authorized an operation to get Osama bin Laden. ... Today at my direction, the United States launched a targeted operation against that compound in Abottabad, Pakistan. A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed. They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of body.

    • Multiple news sources are confirming that President Obama will announce momentarily that Osama bin Laden, the world’s most wanted terrorist, has been killed by American military personnel and the country is in possession of his body. On October 7, 2008, President Obama said, “We will kill Bin Laden.” Watch

Update President Obama, in his remarks announcing the operation that killed Osama bin Laden after a firefight in Pakistan earlier today, emphasized that this should be a moment of international unity, rather than division:
We must reaffirm the United States is not and never will be at war with Islam. I have made clear, just as President Bush did shortly after 9-11, our war is not against Islam. He was not a Muslim leader. He was a mass murderer of Muslims. Al Qaeda slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. His demise should be welcomed by those who believe in peace and human dignity

    • Obama calls Bush and Clinton
      By Michael O'Brien - 05/02/11 12:04 AM ET

Former President George W. Bush said that he congratulated President Obama and members of the military upon learning that Osama bin Laden had been killed on Sunday.

Bush, during whose presidency bin Laden launched the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., said that Obama called him Sunday evening to inform him of bin Laden's death in a U.S.-led military operation.

I congratulated him and the men and women of our military and intelligence communities who devoted their lives to this mission," Bush said in a statement. "They have our everlasting gratitude."

A senior administration official said early Monday morning that Obama spoke also with former President Clinton on Sunday.

Bush had set out to capture or kill bin Laden shortly after the 2001 attacks, which never came to pass during his administration. Much has been made of the coincidence of bin Laden's death, on May 1, coming eight years to the day after Bush's famous "Mission Accomplished" speech on an aircraft carrier, announcing the end of major military operations in Iraq.

"This momentous achievement marks a victory for America, for people who seek peace around the world, and for all those who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001," Bush said. "The fight against terror goes on, but tonight America has sent an unmistakable message: No matter how long it takes, justice will be done."

    • US warns of al-Qaida reprisals over bin Laden
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The State Department is putting U.S. embassies on alert and is warning Americans abroad of possible reprisal attacks from al-Qaida and its affiliates around the world after the killing of the group's leader Osama bin Laden by American forces in Pakistan.

In a worldwide travel alert released shortly after President Barack Obama late Sunday announced bin Laden's death in a military operation, the department said there was an "enhanced potential for anti-American violence given recent counterterrorism activity in Pakistan." It said Americans living or traveling abroad, particularly in areas that have been hit by anti-American violence in the past should limit travel outside their homes and avoid large gatherings.

The alert said U.S. embassy operations would continue "to the extent possible under the constraints of any evolving security situation."
