Osama Bin Laden's burial at sea upsets families of 9.11 victims

Image

Rosaleen Tallon kissed her three children good night and went to sleep feeling at peace. The terrorist responsible for the death of her brother, New York firefighter Sean Patrick Tallon, was dead. Her two boys and her little girl had been assured that the "bad man" behind the attacks that claimed their uncle was gone.

But when Tallon awoke Monday to the news that Osama bin Laden had been buried at sea, she was stunned. That was one corpse she would like to have seen for herself, Tallon said, her fiery words underscoring the change this suburban science teacher has undergone in the last decade.

"I wouldn't be honest if I didn't say I was a little dismayed — a lot dismayed," Tallon said as her 20-month-old son, Paddy, nestled in her arms while savoring a red lollipop. "I think that was too hasty. I would've liked the American people to say without a shadow of a doubt, 'Yes, that's him.' "

    • I can understand how different people feel about not showing the pictures of the body and burying it at sea what i don,t understand is how quickly the la times managed to put these people together to protest with 12 mikes pointed at them and I assume 12 cameras and why not follow up with the a group of people who feel it was correctly done and now want it to be done with.Is this what the people want or is it the desire of the press to keep this story going

Interesting logic. Some won't believe therefore we won't release the pictures. Like burial at sea hasn't raised enough doubts anyhow. Why cut the grass it will just grow back.
I'm waiting for the liberals to say how we should not have don't this unilaterally and how we violated a sovereign nations space etc. Since their guy got a bump in the polls that won't happen. No honesty.
I'm glad Osama is gone but I believe he has been gone for a while. Thought he had end stage renal disease 8 years ago. If so where did he go for dialysis? Can't be one on every streetcorner in Pakistan. There are a lot of questions surrounding this operation and Barry is not very forthcoming in answering them. I am not taking the word of some politician in the White HOuse just because he is a politician in the WH. Governments lie, especially this one. Obama needed the push to offset Trumps allegations, the inability to get the leader of Libya, deteriorating situation in the mid east, the divisiveness he created in this country and the economy. This could be his attempt or it could be legit, don't know. One thing is for sure, he is continuing his arrogance in this decision. If we don't want to look at the pictures then click somewhere else.

    • omg... i understand that their loved ones died 10 years ago... i get it... my mother was killed 5 years ago, and i dont get to go around stomping my feet at everything that upsets me due to her death... at some point, we have to make the decisions that we have to make... those people are going to have to get over their pain and heal on their own... we cant cater to them for all of eternity

    • Understand her outrage - I guess. But, treating him with the way a "common" Muslim should be treated was the right thing to do. I personally would have liked to see his head on a pike pole. I also admit, this would not have been helpful and who knows what would have happened if they would have caught him within months. I think revenge would have been the goal and Bush would have exploited this. Based on our blunder in Iraq and our long protracted war in AF, I think we need to get back to our roots of holding ourselves up as better than these barbarians.

Time to rehabilitate our reputation in world.

This should take the rest of my life. Let's get started.

Free fall of the towers that were built to withstand exactly that type of accident and lack of damages to the pentagon still smell devious too me plus the Bldg 7 collapse i could be wrong but there are questions unanswered IMO.

A famous actrss once said" My mother told me if I don't have anything nice to say, not to say anything at all. So, here goes. He's dead. How nice."
Its amazing how people bitterly hang on. The fact our brave soldiers risking their lives isn't enough for these people. They remind me of the bishops leading the crusades. \\kill them all. leave none alive//
Lets just focus on dismantling their movement. We just punched the loudest bully in the mouth. The rest is just standing up and saying no more.

    • This whole debate about whether the pics will be released or not shows just how much damage the Shrubs administration did to our values as a nation.

He was so into the swagger, and cowboy mystique, that he had to laud his actions on the world stage. So, when we killed Uday and Kusay, he had to have their pictures splattered across every newspaper on the planet... same when justice came to Saddam...

He was a buffoon. Such actions only resulted in more hatred toward us. Such callous disregard revealed us to be the heartless, arrogant, warmongers that the middle east believed us to be.

Thank god we have a president now who considers the consequences to his actions before he engages in them. And who means what he says when he says it, and doesn't just respond to everything based on whim and bluster.

Even when Hitler's body was found, pictures were not released immediately.

Obama killed Osama. i'm satisfied with that. You all will get your stupid pictures sooner or later... not that it will do a damn thing to quell the conspiracy theories of most of the lunatics out there who have an axe to grind.

But, had Obama immediately released the pictures, not only would he have risked incensing the entire arab world, but the same jackasses who are criticizing him now, would have been criticizing him for such a release and calling him a "braggart" who was endangering the nation by such a quick and unconsidered action.

      Hypocrites.

What ever happened to basic valor? We got him. We don't have to dishonor ourselves in the mad rush to put his bloody corpse on display. Letting him be food for the fishes is sufficient for him. And we can, through our display of thoughtful action, hopefully move toward healing the rift between ourselves and the Muslim world.

Again... Obama could walk on water and the right would come in and criticize him for not knowing how to swim.

Me too. I'm going back for my first visit in two years next week. Every time I hit Boulder, my hometown, my blood pressure skyrockets and my mood plunges. The place is full of rude snotty idiots. Have been hit twice by bicycles on sidewalk, once by vehicle right-turning on red. O the joys of pedestrianism in a supposedly pedestrian-friendly town.

I was born in Boulder. Last time my wife and I took the kids we rented a car in Denver and drove to spend a couple days hiking the flat irons and visiting friends. I have a large family and my wife had reserved a minivan. When we got to the airport, they had no minivans and they gave us an SUV. My wife told the attendant we would not take it, as we were going to Boulder and Aspen, unless they threw in the extra insurance free. The guy looked at her like she was a pushy you know what, sighed, and did it. The first night in Boulder, both sides of the SUV were keyed and it was a flex fuel!

Do you know how honestly retarded it would be to confirm that the most recognizable criminal in all of the world is dead only for him to release a video next month?

"Proofers" are dumb. The dude has been dead a day.

FUN FACT: When Soviets came across Hitler's burnt out bunker and body in Berlin they actually made a wax doll of Hitler and took pictures of it to keep the idiots of the world from crying foul.

    • I'm sorry - I'll probably get a great deal of grief for the following statement, but who the F@#$ cares what these people expect and/or want. I know you lost somebody in the attack but the entire country suffered that day! Seriously, they were ordinary people prior to 9/11 and just because they lost somebody in the attack does not elevate them to special person status. I don't suddenly care what their opinion is just because somebody close to them went to work that day. Fireman and police that risked their lives by entering the building after the attack - ABSOLUTELY - those people are incredible heroes and I will cede to their relatives when they voice their opinions in this matter.

    • This conspiracy theory meme about Osama's body is ridiculous.

Most 9/11 families are simply glad that Osama is dead. Some people will never be happy, no matter what is done. And some will try to bash the Obama administration at every opportunity.

The burial at sea is simply an attempt to prevent Osama becoming anymore of a martyr than he already is.

Who talked about 'parading' his body around? Some family members need to see a body for closure. I would be one of them as well. Having lost people I love I can understand that. If I had a family member or someone else I loved die in a foreign country for example and was told their body could not be found or returned for whatever reason, I could not go on feeling as though I had gotten closure. It is very important to some, and I don't believe it has anything to do with who is in the White House. Why must those who cheerlead for Obama always twist everything around as an attack on him and call people with legitimate questions or opinions conspiracy theorists? Is that all some can think of? Their precious politics? I think any members of families who died in any action related to this should be allowed the option to view those photos (since the "body" is now reported as buried) and other evidence if they wish to. Those who don't wish to surely have that option as well. But dismissing this as just an attack on Obama is in my view a slap in the face to those who have endured much loss already.

He told me that the sea burial was meant to stop Muslim terrorist worldwide from making his grave site a rallying post for retaliation against America. He also said that there are photos available that may be release later on. He said that the White House has concerns that the photos are extremely gruesome and they'll probably create Jihadist anger worldwide.

    • Do the families of 9/11 victims have a right to be upset by the way Bin Laden's corpse was disposed of? Damn know it. I know I would be livid. Why in the world would the military leave anything to doubt in the definitive identification of Bin Laden? Who was it that made the decision to do this in the first place to dump the body where no one would ever be able to exhume the corpse at a future date? It is difficult to understand or justify to say the least. What was the hurry? And what the world has to go by is a DNA sample to assure that the body was that of Bin Laden's? No physical identification was made prior to the dumping of the body? Way too many questions were left unanswered for this to be accepted as the indisputable facts. Anyone who doesn't question any government after all that has gone down is naive to put it lightly. Government's do not readily give its people the true story. And this one will join the long list of head scratchers courtesy of this country. But it all makes sense for anyone who has been paying attention.

I definitely feel uneasy about how quickly bin Laden's body was thrown out, but the rational seems a bit fitting. US officials point out that the burial site of Osama bin Laden would have become a place to worship him as a martyr for his supporters, and a target for those filled with hate for him. Burying him on land would have meant making it the most top secret location. The best option was to quickly get rid of bin Laden's body in the ocean.

I think they should have gone "the most top secret location" route personally. What is happening now, is that US mosques are getting vandalized as the show of hate from the hooligans "celebrating" the death. I agree with queenofit, this was one of those times that the utmost transparency was required and not provided. This is the administration that just won the "Transparency Award". This gives the impression of being less than upfront about the whole thing. Just my opinion.

That rationale doesn't hold water in view of the fact that Wahabi strict traditions and rules demand that the burial place should be unmarked and remain unknown, precisely to avoid worship. Casting a Muslim's body in the sea unless that Muslim died at sea so far that it would take more than 24 hours to bring it ashore is an insult to all Muslims, too.

    • Vierotchka:

That fact is the biggest red herring in all of this, Vierotchka. But after all the leg work had been done to paint Bin Laden as America's Most Wanted Terrorist, the government wasn't about to shift gears and introduce another villain. They had already created their ready to roll on day one evil incarnate and Bush/Cheney weren't going to ask for new cards to play when they knew they were already holding the winning hand in their neo-con dream scenario. Bin Laden only represents the symbolic "closure" for 9/11, whether real or fictional.

To me, this so called "burial at sea" is no more than what the mobsters do when they need to get rid of evidence, they take the body to the river and dump it? What ever the rational behind this move, it is not sitting well. With all the mystery surrounding OBL during the last 10 years, one would have hoped for a little more transparency at this juncture? Something smells like a rat to me? (no offense intended to rat lovers?) wink!

I totally agree that burying the most wanted terrorist at sea before showing a single photo or video clip is very odd. The rational I have heard from US officials is that by burying his body on land, the site would allow his supporters to worship him as a martyr, while those that hate him may feel driven to destroy his burial. Either way, his burial site would have had to become the most top secret place. Best idea was to toss him into the sea.

Thanks for posting this. I'm with you. These families deserved irrefutable truth that the reputed mastermind of their loved ones deaths is indeed dead. Anyone who is a citizen of this country has the right to question what is told to them when there are undeniable questions about the veracity of these facts. These families can't be lumped into and dismissed as "conspiracy theorists". That is just another insult on top of the many already heaped upon them.

Tru dat! But if we pay attention the islamic world is on a path of change that seems to reject the thinking of those like bin Laden. We must support that change and hope that it leads to their version of democracy.

Another point of interest is that bin Laden was found to be living in the lap of luxury while his followers live in poverty. I hope that they realize that he was using them for his own power-trip and reject his twisted version of islam.

    • Is she a "conspiracy theorist" too to dare ask that our own government provide justice and true closure? Those who question the words of their government are not conspiracy theorists, they are Americans who seek truth and accountability. It is only political partisans who don't like those questions as it is seen as a downer to their hopes that the news will be used to garner political ratings and votes. Let's be honest already. As an American who lost friends that day, and as someone who has seen over the years how the American people have been lied to, manipulated, coerced, and had the truth kept from them through collusion of the military industrial complex, it is absolutely within my rights as an American to ask for evidence of their words. Blind allegiance is detrimental to democracy, and the cornerstone of that democracy is an informed citizenry.

Yes it shows a very subtle turn to a place where we as a nation should never go. Asking questions and seeking accountability from our government is imperative in maintaining transparency and justice. But then, this country is so polarized because of political parties that it isn't surprising to see an atmosphere where that is now frowned upon. When I questioned the events around 9.11 I got the same response from Bush supporters. This shouldn't be about Democrats or Republicans.
