TX Teacher Suspended After Telling Muslim Student 'I Bet You're Grieving'

Image

A Texas high school teacher has been placed on administrative leave following an incident where he allegedly told a 9th grade Muslim girl in his algebra class "I bet that you're grieving" on Monday following the death of Osama bin Laden.

According to one parent at Clear Brook High School in Houston who spoke about the incident to a local ABC affiliate, the teacher also said, "I heard about your uncle's death."

The parent said the student "understood that he was referring about Osama bin Laden being killed and was racially profiling her."

The name of the alleged victim of the comment has not been released. She is being described as an "American-born girl of Muslim faith."

The teacher allegedly showed no remorse after Muslim girl reacted to his comments, according to the parent (who requested anonymity from the ABC station because "she doesn't want any retaliation against her daughter or the girl who experienced the inappropriate comment.")

"The student ended up crying over what was said to her by the teacher and the teacher asked her why she was crying and another student said it was because of what you said earlier," the parent told the station. "And his response was, oh, OK, and just kind of smirked and giggled and walked away.

========================================

What an asshole. If this teacher doesn't have enough sense not to say something so cruel to one of his students it's time to fire him.

    • It appears that we are becoming a country for insults. We assume our thoughts are correct, or imagination precise, and we know everything. Whatever happened to the idea of respecting ourselves, and each other.
There is a saying that we catch more bees with honey, than a hammer. Therefore, we make more friends with kind words...than insults. Let's revert back to civilize conversations.

    • I know its wrong but i laughed at this when i saw the headline. Not because i agreed, but because of what a moron this teacher is. First that the thought even went through his head, then he said it out loud. I don't think i have ever met anyone that dumb.

    • Lets keep in mind that the first bit of racism came from Maine, where people spray painted hateful racist remarks on a mosque... nobody said "oh that figures" infact... maine barely came up at all... why is it such an emphasis on texas?

    • "hey, dont mess with texas" is the official response to racism institutionalized, so too for az, and hell all of the other southern states. The war isnt over for those types of people, its still the civil war but for them now they have so many more enemies to fight, asians, latinos, muslims, anything not christian, anything not them.

what a short sighted point of view... no better than the racists themselves to throw away half the country to this hair brained idea... most of the racism that hits headlines are in northern states, as a matter of fact... you can look that up

You have missed the point entirely, I was simply stating that it is highly institutionalized by those types of people. Oh Im sorry did the kkk start in maine? I was not assuming nor did I state that all of the people in the south, it is about the type of people who think that this is ok.

hmm, maybe its not in the media in the south as much as in the north but it still happens, as well as killing gay kids. you can probably look that up too. This isnt about north v.s. south, hell im not even in the north, its about a mentality that the south never lost. Kids in TN were taught that they won the the Battle of the Alamo until somewhat recently, thats what im saying. Its about tx schoolbooks which dont have separation of church and state in the constitution, also sans thomas jefferson and nelson madela. Im talking about the propaganda war which the 'south', spread much wider now, is still fighting. look it up, as a matter of fact.

No, the kkk didn't start in Maine, but it didn't start in Texas either. It started in one place in the south and spread throughout the entire U.S. Even to the NE. And I seem to remember that it was New Yorkers that didn't want a mosque put anywhere near the WTC site. I could understand if it had been an Al Queda recruitment and information hub, but it was really about non-Islamic people assuming that ALL Islamic peoples have the same agenda. I didn't miss the point; I just disagree with yours.

actually, no, you are getting confused, they are Tx made textbooks, so they are"texas" textbooks, as opposed to the "california" textbooks, the two main books that are purchased across the American schoolboard nationwide. Now whether or not you were taught with a texas book or a cali one I have no idea, but maybe you arent old enough to have gotten one of them, I dont know, but it is what it is. Honestly I come from a state that harbors its own douchers, you might say me, but so does yours, i dont really care about which state is which. Just the way the cookie crumbles, dont get all state rightous on me.

I seem to remember that it was also New York that wanted the mosque there, just alot of right wing propaganda stated that it shouldnt be there. Besides I may not agree with the ideals of the new yorkers who felt this way after 9-11 but I do understand their emotions, but you can obviously see the glaring difference in your analogy that is stated thusly: the blacks in the south did not fly 2 airplanes into the souths heart.

30 years old. Used Texas made textbooks in Texas as a student, which included both separation of church and state and Thomas Jefferson. Still not confused, I just don't agree with you. Not going to bother trying to convince you of that anymore either.

    • Here are just Ten things that are great about Texas.

      1. Saturday night on the Riverwalk in downtown San Antonio. The mood is always festive. The drinks as icy cold as the music is hot. There's good food, fun little shops, great scenery, fun local tradition, and plenty of people to party with.

      2. Austin's music scene. Spend an evening on East Sixth Street where live music is celebrated with a fervor that every city should muster. Chill out in a funky club, try one of the humongous jalapeno burgers in the El Camino, or head over to Stubbs where the barbecue is the best in Texas and the music even draws big name rock, pop, and blues artists coming to pick up a few cues from the masters.

      3. Hanging out on the beach in South Padre Island. It may be known as a Spring Break Mecca, but the fall months are my favorite time of year to bring the family because the weather is still fabulously warm and the crowds slim enough for the locals to slow down and smile along with the tourists. Take a dolphin spotting cruise out into the Gulf, or catch a few trophy fish. Enjoy a spectacular sun set over Laguna Madre, or come in the winter for the bird watching opportunities, as flocks of northern songbirds come for the warm ambience.

      4. Any day in October at the Texas State Fair in Dallas. Maybe it's the thought of seeing the biggest livestock specimens in the Lone Star State that will bring you. Maybe it's the thought of taking a ride on the Texas Star --- biggest ferris wheel in America. Maybe it's the chance to root the UT Longhorns on to victory over those dastardly Oklahoma Sooners. Or maybe it's just putting aside your diet for a while to enjoy a huge greasy deep fried corn dog and a mug of homemade root beer.

      5. Celebrating a hot, sunny Texas summer day on the lazy river tube rides and wild wave surfer rides at Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels. Does the world know a bigger, bolder, badder waterpark?? I've never seen it.

      6. Rafting down the Rio Grande in Big Bend National Park. The rugged dry backcountry of southwest Texas is sure a far cry from the pine-studded forests of more northerly states, but the dramatic stone formations and the stark desert landscapes have their own natural beauty and drama.

      7. Waking up on Sunday morning and having breakfast in a great Tex-Mex restaurant where huge bowls of pozole brighten the morning and the barbacoa tacos with salsa verde taste so spicy you just know you're not in any wimpy state that fears the chile.

      8. Ride on a ranch. Texas and cowboys go together like whipped cream on ice cream. The King Ranch in South Texas is bigger than the whole darn state of Rhode Island (and just as full of bull). See the ranch, or maybe experience the XIT rodeo or museum up in the northwest corner of the state. There's dozens of dude ranches you can visit if you want to live the cowboy life yourself for a little while.

      9. Blast off for an afternoon of fun with a visit to NASA Johnson Space Center on the south side of Houston. The visitor's center is expensive, but kid friendly, and the guided tour of the space center itself is a fascinating view of America's "can do" attitude when it comes to our future outside the limits of planet Earth.

      10. Houston Rodeo. February is a total extravagance in Houston when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo rides into town. Trail riders come into town from every side of the city and the festival itself kicks off with a fun parade through the heart of the city. A huge midway thrills the kids, the cowboys love their riding events and livestock show, and every night there's a top name performer filling the Reliant Stadium for a live concert (naturally, there's country artists, but there's also rock, pop, and latin music stars to bring something for everyone).

the only thing that I can think of is that perhaps at some point in the class the student made some comments supporting bin Laden. Imagine if you're a teacher and you have a muslim kid in your class who starts saying that bin Laden and al Qa'eda are heroic fighting against America etc, I can imagine the teacher biting his tongue and not responding, and then the day bin Laden dies not being able to hold back a litte response "bet you're sad today".

Probably not a good idea if that was the scenario, but it does make it a little more unstandable.

but if the kid had NEVER made any statement like that, and this teacher just took it on himself to assume Muslim=terrorist supporter, then he should be fired, no question.

    • I think most teachers are good and have the good sense to be sensitive to the feelings of others and not blurt out in the classroom whatever comes to mind. This teacher shows a lack of empathy and a lack of self control. Obviously the power the teacher has went to the teacher's head. This teacher is one individual teacher and does not reflect on all teachers or all the people in Texas. Yes, this teacher should be dismissed.

    • ignorance and cruelty doesn't dwell in any particular county, state, or country for that matter. I'm not from Texas, nor have i ever been there but i did read all the comments and maybe we should aknowledge the horrible things the man said and see that he gets what he deserves instead of just putting emphasis on where he lives. People do horrible things every where and saying this man did something stupid and mean just because of where he lives is being hypocritical of the message of the article. You would just be putting a group of people into a specific ideal, just as the teacher did to his student. Just an opinion, I'm not trying to say the other people can't give theirs. It's just a different outlook

It's hard to understand why some teachers feel they have to humiliate a student in front of their peers just to feed their own egos. Perfect example of the JAAGBOL Syndrome. (Just another a__hole in the giant Buttock of Life). They exist in California too. My sister is a retired teacher and it's a hard job, takes a great deal of effort and dedication if done right. Just 1 fool can create so much harm, should lose his credential, let him slither back under the hot rock where he hatched out.
