Yet I guess it's no big deal if people are allowed to buy up all sorts of military assault rifles without any proof of mental sanity or criminal background check. That's cute. I know I was born into a country with a lot of really nice rights and freedoms. I was brainwashed by the powers that be in this country that a flag is holier than a Bible or a Constitution and that soldiers who are forced to go kill innocent brown people on other continents are "protecting my freedoms" and other such propaganda. Now that I'm 30 I've lost more and more of my rights. I don't have anymore rights to privacy, that's for sure. I don't have the right to get on an airplane without some pervert TSA agent either feeling up all my private parts or taking a naked x-ray scan of me, if I ever were to get an abortion I might be forced to do so within a couple of months and wait several days and hear my doctor read some stupid script and have a medically un-necessary ultrasound and prove I wasn't raped, I will never get the right to have Medicare when I am old let alone Social Security which I've been forced to pay into while working, the banks all got bailed out with TARP funds yet I still don't have the right to access my OWN money I earn and pay taxes on from an ATM machine without paying a $3 (and soon $5) fee because I guess the banks are big greedy babies who want it ALL, I don't have the right to clean air and water because our world leaders can't stop drilling for oil and spilling the crap all over the place, I don't have the right to my own cell phone if a cop decides to stop me for some arbitrary reason and demands I turn over the phone so they can remove the SIM card and steal all my PERSONAL phone information (not making that one up), and if certain GOP candidates God forbid win the 2012 presidency, children won't have the right to wear sagging pants (and probably not plumbers either as they'd be guilty of the same crime) but heroin MIGHT become legal. Yes, HEROIN, not pot. (Meaning the drug that kills people, not the one that makes you hungry for Cheetos.)
I am confused. WHAT country do I live in now? One with rights? Or a Capitalistic fascist one? I'm a little confused about what I was taught as a little kid when the school I went to insisted we recite the Pledge of Allegiance in addition to all the propaganda I got from the textbooks (ALL Texas based publishing company since schools never get to decide textbooks) which were completely focused on white men and wars and nothing else. War war war and more war and guns guns guns and bombs. What happened to the days of John Lennon and Peace and Love? Really, what has happened to my country? All because a really smart Harvard graduate black man got elected and a bunch of KKK Teabagging idiots can't stand that thought? The Tea Party wants us broke, stupid, trapped, with guns to our heads. That's the message I'm getting lately.

It's not like he has been anywhere near fiscally conscious, he's spending money hand over foot. George Bush never saw a spending bill he didn't like. I know, right? I keep waiting too. Sure would be nice. Then again as an artist who also has plenty of experience in the nonprofit world, I won't count on it myself. All the things I went to college/training for just get de-funded. Meanwhile banks and corporations get bailouts and TARP money. My favorite bank? Wells Fargo! Ever meet a Wells Fargo employee? They all parrot the same PR line they must have been fed from the higher ups. And yes, I'm talking about DEMOCRATS too who work for Wells Fargo. I am friends with some of them. This is basically the script and I'm not joking, "Well I work for Wells Fargo and Wells Fargo was FORCED to take the TARP money. We were so NICE to take that money we were FORCED to take and we paid it all back right away!" While I agree Wells probably wasn't needing the bailout money like every OTHER bank, I think it's laughable they'd say they were "forced" to take money from we tax payers. Kind of made me want to puke. And it's also true they did pay it back. But they're not really a lollipops and unicorns and cute fuzzy bunnies company either. Every time I go to the ATM near my home (and it happens to be Wells Fargo...of course...and I "bank" at a Credit Union) I get socked with a $3 fee. No, not $1.50 or $2 or even $2.50 like most of the other banks in my area. It's $3.
Here's a fun example AND a true story. (Keep in mind at the moment I'm without a car and have been riding buses.) I get a paycheck in the mail. Yay! Go me! I got paid for working! Yippee! (And will of course be taxed for it which is fine since people need to pay their share of course.) But I want to DEPOSIT the check in my Credit Union (notice I didn't say "bank"). I also have to take the bus to the Credit Union as mentioned, right? Now I happen to have not found enough cash or quarters in my couch to afford the EXACT bus fare so I first walk to the nearest ATM, the Wells Fargo one. And naturally I have to get out at LEAST $20 from this machine which thankfully I had. But I'm really spending $3 to get my $20 bill. But then I can't just give the bus driver a $20 bill because of course he/she won't give me my change. So, I have to buy a candy bar or whatever is cheapest at the store I'm at. That's probably about another $1. Oh, and I have to bug the busy cashier to give some of the change in QUARTERS (while patient OTHER customers are waiting for me) because I sure as hell am not going to pay $3 for the bus when it's actually $2.50. Right? So Now I've paid $4 JUST to get the bus fare. Add the $2.50 for bus fare and now we're at $6.50 just to deposit MY OWN money! Odd, isn't it? Odd that Wells Fargo thinks they were "doing the country a favor by taking TARP funds" when they still steal my $3 that I worked for.

Yes of course we need to balance the budget. It's not that complicated though. There's this thing called Defense spending and we're currently in not one, but THREE wars. (We might even be able to call it FOUR wars if you separate Afghanistan and Pakistan even though it's the SAME war.) Two started by the last guy, one started by the current guy. (Yeah yeah, NATO...blah blah...had to save the people. Mmm hmm.) As for the two wars from the last guy, one was started for no reason and we're still there. The other one? Gosh, didn't we just FINALLY find and kill that Bin Laden dude? Gosh, sounds like a "Mission Accomplished" to me, but what do I know. Ending even ONE of the THREE wars would be a nice START, wouldn't it? Especially when we have so many many problems at home. Don't even get me started on that euphemism we call "Nation Building". We've basically destroyed at least 2 countries and we're not "liberating" anyone. When people are living in filthy lacking in food/water tent cities and forced to sell their 5 year old daughters into sex trade to give them "a better life" (so at least they can EAT even though they'll be repeatedly RAPED), that sure as hell doesn't sound like "Nation Building" to me. Does it to you? Not to mention all the mercenaries and contractors brought to you by yours truly, Dick Cheney & Friends (or Haliburton, etc.) where the contractors live in McMansions next to all the trash and destruction. McMansions and insane salaries WE all get to pay for with OUR tax dollars. You know, that money we make while WE are working our butts off if we're fortunate to HAVE a job at all. So, there's THAT.
Then there's that whole bit about Corporations not paying taxes AND getting tax breaks. Oh, and sending all of OUR jobs to OTHER countries for the cheap labor, basically exploiting people in places like China, Mexico, India, and so on. Meanwhile they can spend billions on their nice little PAC or super PAC or whatever groups along with lobbyists to brainwash the politicians on BOTH sides of the aisles insuring of course that the PEOPLE (REAL people, not Corporations with "personhood rights") get screwed.
Notice I haven't even GOTTEN to the bit about the wealthiest 2% of the population getting tax BREAKS. Heck, even if we did all of the above and let the rich cats keep all their change for their BMWs and boats and toys and fancy jewelry...we might come close to balancing the budget AND be able to fund Social/Human Services, the arts, public transportation, libraries, schools, police departments, fire departments, and so on.

TARP was a big crock of you know what. At least the stimulus sort of helped. Cash for Clunkers ring a bell by any chance? People sure wanted to buy new cars, didn't they? So much so that the program ran out and a lot of people were disappointed. Let's not forget of course that TARP was passed during the BUSH/CHENEY administration. Though Obama voted for it (why, who knows), but let's at least clarify which happened under what president.
I miss Clinton too. He got that whole Reagan/Bush mess cleaned up. Then along came Bush/Cheney to erase all that hard work. And Bush/Cheney screwed us WAY more than Reagan/Bush/Quayle did. Obama is having to clean up a really big mess. Almost as big as The Great Depression.

All the stimulus did was blow up the national debt beyond even George Bush, which is mind boggling in itself. The only reason for Clash for Clunkers was the government holds controlling stake in not one but two of the American big three automakers, and still most of the money went to Japan. The TARP law, and I was vehmently against it, but as written was specifically for financial institutions. Obama used the money illegally for GM and Chrysler, certainly not financial institutions. The entire debacle was unconstitutional, and we the taxpayers are still footing the bill.

So basically the Republicans have turned America into a Communist state:
>3 months and in 49 states there have been 919 anti-abortion laws introduced by Republicans.
>Here in NYC you can't even smoke in parks anymore and co-op boards are considering banning smoking in your own co-op or apartment. So in reality you can't smoke outside or inside a place you just bought for $3.2 million dollers. Can you believe that?

I don't know. Does it? Does it mean a lot of Democrats in Congress are spineless or outnumbered? Does it mean the country as a whole has moved way far to the right (or did under Bush and still is there despite a Democrat in the White House who really is only moderate anyway, as is Clinton)? Or does it mean liberal voters got lazy and apathetic and forgot to vote in 2010 (low voter turnout, particularly in the Gen Y group)? Does it mean everything is in gridlock because of all of the above and therefore nothing gets accomplished, certainly not anything progressive? The biggest accomplishments for the left-wing have been a health care plan that lacks a public option and isn't very liberal (though at least it's SOMETHING) and then we just nailed Bin Laden? In addition to various catastrophes that keep on happening like the BP oil spill (not the fault of the Executive Branch or really any branch but instead a corporation) along with other terrible sad things like the earthquake combined with nuclear waste mess in Japan? No kidding! I love the fact that your link mentions Libertarians and the Village Voice being a united front on these views. The beginning part that mentions one needing to disclose whether or not circumcision happened at birth? First of all, gross! Why would any man need to disclose such information to the government (or need to do so just to go on a nice vacation) not to mention would he have to drop his pants to prove so? Also, how sexist because as a woman that particular point obviously doesn't apply to me, meaning it really shouldn't be relevant anyway. Not to mention, what a joke that such paperwork would ONLY take about 45 minutes. Ha! That's more documentation than a TSA agent has to fill out to get a job (which is about a 45 page document asking about the same amount of questions.) What's next? Needing to have a psychiatrist and a clergy person stamp a piece of paper stating you're a citizen AND worthy of being able to travel somewhere out of the country? Why is it becoming harder to go on a nice vacation than it is to buy an assault rifle? What's next? Needing a passport to drive from Stillwater, MN to Hudson, WI? Or from Manhattan to Newark?

I sure hope it doesn't come to that, yet there are people in states like Texas who want to do just that. What a mess for the rest of us if that happens. Would there suddenly be a new sovereign nation named New MexiTerizona? And for the rest of us, the redistricting and complete change of government would be a big migraine headache for all of us to figure out. Balancing the budget sounds simple in comparison.

I would love if it came to that. We will never agree on anything, so why do we keep hurting each other. The perpetual gridlock in Washington will never get us anywhere. So you go your way, and I'll go mine. Called it a divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences. I don't want to live under the corrupt Federal government's laws anymore. I don't trust them, I know they do not have my best interests in mind, and I know they are obscenely wasting my hard earned tax dollars, so why would I?

dawgkat, great commentary. I have a nephew your age and I feel sorry for all you young people who will not live or grow up in the America I did. I'll be 50 in August and I won't have an easy time ahead of me either. I never thought I'd live to see my country turn into this fascist place. This passport deal is just another way to control information gathering. The more they know about you, the more they can control you. This is why I have none of the gadgets. I don't do Facebook or Twitter, either. I just have a cheapie cell phone for emergencies and I just have my computer, which I know leaves it's own trail but at least I don't have any of that other crap that helps the government know even more about me. Thanks again for your commentary. I wish more young people would sit down and write stuff like this. I think the world needs to know more about how young people feel about this country. I wish more young people were this mindful.

This is defiantly an LOL. How in the hell is the Tea Party to blame for all this? Because it's convenient to not blame the ones in Washington for this mess? Whatever haters, go ahead w/ your hate. Republican? HATE EM!! Tea Partier? HATE EM!! Birther? HATE EM!!! Deather, HATE EM!! Say something bad about Barrack (Barry) Obama (Soetoro)? HATE EM!! Anti Abortion? HATE EM!! God? HATE HIM TOO!! Yeah for a bunch of people that spout HATE all the time. You sure like to toss stones...

Actually I have a lot of Republican and/or conservative friends and relatives; all people I love. What makes you assume I "hate God" or don't believe in God? I never said anything like that. I also never said that I "hate" any group. Hate is a rather strong word. I only reserve it for people like Hitler or things like violence.

If you aren't part of the solution, you may be part of the problem. I realize that's not quite as forceful as Dubyah's "if you aren't with us you're against us," but I personally disagree with you that this particular post is either tossing stones or a HATE document. I think the author did a good job of summing up her awareness of the growing loss of freedoms Americans are experiencing.

Yes! A steady diet of HATE from Republicans, Teabaggers, Birthers, Deathers, Obama (black race) haters, Abortion haters, War lovers, no tax freeloaders, and the Christian right has changed the thinking and hardened the hearts of many! And lets not forget Bush and heartless one! They played a big roll in this as well!

I'm guessing he or she wasn't talking about you specifically. But I'll take a stab at that answer. Yes, it's possible to not be all whooped up over Obama AND be against racism. During the primaries in 2008 my first choice (choices...plural) were not Hillary Clinton OR Barack Obama. But when it came my turn to vote I had to pick one of the two. And I picked one of the two. And then I picked the winner of those two in the General Election.
As for anyone intrigued with the concept of anti-racism, I HIGHLY recommend checking out this group called ASDIC (Anti-Racism Dialog Circle) as well as the film "Color of Fear". Truly interesting group AND film.

From your comment it is you that is full of hate. I don't agree with the tea party, birthers, Deathers. They also have much hate in them for our president. There are a lot of people in congress and the past adminstration I blame for the mess were in. President Obama has and is trying to get us out of this mess. His name is Barack Obama and is president of the free world.

That's too bad that the Democratic party aloud that to happen. I am still proud of the fact that I'm a Democrat. But, I like to add "constitutionalist" because I do believe if our Government went back to the principals enumerated there-in this would be a better place to be and create for our children.

Sure is odd that the Freedom Loving, Constitutionally Pure, Purveyers of Democracy, or as they call themselves..."The Tea Party" can foster legislation that actually chips away our freedoms. They are imitating the Nazis in 1934 Germany almost to a tee. When is the American Voter going to wake up and see whats going on? It's about coming up on "too late" time.

Ummmm this doesn't have anything to do with the TEA PARTY! This was passed by rule making by the U.S. Department of State which is headed by Hillary Clinton, a member in Obama's Cabinet.... the executive branch. Cute editorial though.

Voters registration will be the next freedom they take away from the people. If you were born outside of the US, if your gay, if you believe an abortion is a woman's decision not the governments, if you're skin tone isn't white, if you're a registered Democrat, if you're not a bible reading Christian, if you're against wars, if you believe corporations should be taxed at a higher rate, if you believe taxes should be increased at all. if you're unemployed, if you ever applied for food stamps, if you're on SS, if you're on Medicare, if you didn't vote Republican, your right to vote would be revoked!
The wars might be in the mid east, but the battles are here in America. We are at war and if we don't stand up, wake up, and end this assault on America, we're all screwed! - 1 year ago
