WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama's approval rating has hit its highest point in two years — 60 percent — and more than half of Americans now say he deserves to be re-elected, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll taken after U.S. forces killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.
In worrisome signs for Republicans, the president's standing improved not just on foreign policy but also on the economy, and independent Americans — a key voting bloc in the November 2012 presidential election — caused the overall uptick in support by sliding back to Obama after fleeing for much of the past two years.
Comfortable majorities of the public now call Obama a strong leader who will keep America safe. Nearly three-fourths — 73 percent — also now say they are confident that Obama can effectively handle terrorist threats. And he improved his standing on Afghanistan, Iraq and the United States' relationships with other countries.
Despite a sluggish recovery from the Great Recession, 52 percent of Americans now approve of Obama's stewardship of the economy, giving him his best rating on that issue since the early days of his presidency; 52 percent also now like how he's handling the nation's stubbornly high 9 percent unemployment.
The economy remains Americans' top issue.
AP: Poll Shows Post-bin Laden Surge for Obama
Impressions of the nation's fiscal outlook have improved following last Friday's positive jobs report, which showed American companies are on a hiring spree. More people now say that the economy got better in the past month and that it's likely to continue doing so in the coming year.
Also, more Americans — 45 percent, up from 35 percent in March — say the country is headed in the right direction. Still, about half — 52 percent — say it's on the wrong track, meaning Obama still has work to do to convince a restive public to stay with the status quo.
Some have seen enough to know they'll stick with him.
"I was happy about bin Laden," says Brenda Veckov, 42, of Hollidaysburg, Pa. "I put my fists in the air. To me, it was just a little bit of closure for the United States."
"The president made the right decisions on this one. And I will vote for him again."
Not everyone has such an optimistic view of Obama.

This site has become contaminated. It seems as though, hating one party because its trendy, rules. Pop culture knows best, right? Its not surprising, that a generation that buys into everything marketed to them, would be so easily persuaded. You know, mind numbing reality tv, body spray that promises to get you laid, easy button everything, hipster douchebags that lift others ideas, styles and music instead of creating their own. What will be the slogan this time kids? Bob the builders "YES WE CAN" I say we use Carvilles "ITS THE ECONOMY STUPID" Wait a minute, that was not a quote from a cartoon, maybe not. I voted for the man, but the change I got, was being nickeled and dimed. keep convincing yourself that this is the best we can expect. Its a scary thought, knowing that the very same people responsible for lowering the bar, will elect our next president. No excuses, this guy is not being held responsible for any of his shortcomings. The feeble minded will be exploited in 2012. The clear choice is that there is not one, left or right. When a true independent runs, I will return to the polls, until then, not wasting my vote. When the shit hits the fan, it will be all over your face this time around, not mine.

Sorry NiceN, I misunderstood. I may be caucasian, but I like Barack Obama, not because he's black, but because he articulates what he wants to say very well, is intelligent, caring; and so many more positive aspects about him. I'm not a screaming female re; Oprah Winfrey, but have always liked her and her show. The first time I saw and listened to President Obama, was when he was on OW show. When he spoke, I liked who I was listening to and how he expressed himself. I grew up in an abusive home, but at least my parents didn't teach me to dislike any group of people and to form my own opinion as a result of my interactions with people. Obama is a huuuuuge improvement after the previous jerk, who did nothing for this country and it's citizens; but really messed so much up in this country. He was a friend only to the wealthy and corporations, and those who are corrupt as he and cheaty were. I have never held so much disrespect for any president in my life, but I had/have none for him. However I have lots for President Obama.
Thank you for calling my attention to a mistake I made. Take care :) - 1 year ago

What does Bush have to do with Obama? Isn't it time to stop deflecting Obama's failures back to Bush and start holding Obama accountible? He's been president more than two years. I'm not one that marches in lockstep with either political party. I believe both Bush and Obama will ulimately rank right up there (or down if you will) with Jimmy Carter.

Jimmy Carter, the guy who couldn't get re-elected because he did not sugar coat things and told U.S. citizens the hard truth as it was? Why would Bush, who kept telling the U.S. public that the economy was going strong while pumping money into it to keep it afloat as it took a dive under his deregulations, be "up there" with Jimmy Carter?

Now that you've all orgasmed on Obama's alledged popularity based on this poll, it's bubble bursting time. Go to the AP-GFK site. Look at the polling data.
First a little background. The country is 42% Democrat, 32% Republican and 26% Independent. There's a ten point difference between parties. In the poll 46% of the people questioned were Democrats. 29% were Republicans. That's a seventeen point difference. The poll is fraud. This isn't just about asking a leading questions as some polls will do. The poll base is intentionally biased to make the public believe people are behind Obama. It shows the AP lacks integrity. - 1 year ago

Acknowledge and call out racists, but don't bother arguing with them, you give them opportunity when you do. Call them out then ignore them. Racism= ignorance.
Unfortunatly for all the racists president Barak Obama will win in another landslide, Minorities and youth will show up in 2012 after witnessing the GOP tactics in Wisconsin and Ohio along with other extreme GOP conservatives.one very weak GOP hopefuls, two he is the intellectual leader by far with the possible exception of Mitt Romney, But due to bias, and bigotry a mormon will not be elected President anytime soon.
The drawdaown in Iraq will be almost complete, the drawdaown in Afghanistan will be under way.
Pakistan stands to be the greatest danger in the next few years as the government crumbles and Obama has proven he will act if it's necessary.
The economy will struggle, the damage done after thirty years of debunked economic theory gone afoul as in trickle down supply side economics where tax breaks to the rich were supposed to create jobs, well the truth is George W Bush and his tax cuts ended up with the tripling of the national debt and unemployment rising, the jobs didn't even start to grow until 14 months ago and still some months new unemployment filings are greater than the number of new jobs created. thirty years of disasterous economics cannot be solved in four or even eight years, we have dug a hole so deep, without new revenue and spending cuts in Defense and homeland security you can be sure as the IMF and World Bank have warned interest rates will rise. If the idiots in Washington D.C. don't face reality the bankers from IMF and World Bank will Pressure the federal reserve bank to raise rates. Just the facts - 1 year ago

Being Mormon isn't the issue. RomneyCare in Massachusetts is the issue. It's been a disaster. There are more uninsured people in Massachusetts now than when it was implemented. Insurance costs have risen 50% in the three years since it's implemention. There is an "out" formula based on lack of ability to afford. Don't blame the insurance companies for rising prices. The insurance companies saw it wouldn't work and left the state. All the insurance companies are not-for-profts. They're struggling. Medicaid payments aren't getting made to hospitals. The hospitals are now suing the state. The average wait for a doctor's appointment in Massachusetts is fifty-five days unless it's an emergency.
I haven't seen his press conference today. I wish he would admit he made a mistake instead of blaming the following governor for making changes. The only positive Romney can claim about his universal plan is it was tried at the state level where these things belong, not as a federal mandate. But he needs to admit it was a mistake.

Not quite, your entitled to your opinion but the facts laid out bear what I say, Ronald Reagan increased the debt more than any President since FDR as a percentage of the GDP. George W Bush Tripled the debt. All the result of tax cuts that were claimed to spur the economy. The only spur was defense spending under both unfettered without debate over increases and weapons systems the Pentagon did not even want. Since the inception of tax cuts going all the way back to JFK resulted in greater deficits. Job growth reached its apex under the Dot Com Boom under Clinton who really was just lucky enough to ride a wave of economic growth directly related to the growth of the internet and busiiness done over the internet

Reagan's policies raised raised tax revenues. Unfortunately a Democrat Congress couldn't controll their spending. Reagan traded off the deficit to build a military to make the USSR back down. But the deficit was minute compared to now. George W Bush allowed for ridiculous deficit in his later years once again in conjuction with a Democratic controlled Congress. Obama piled on the debt on top of Bush once again led by a Democratic Congress. Do you see a trend?

The war on poverty has been an expensive failure. It's created entitlement that just keeps rising in cost every year. Did you know there are built in annual increases regardless of the economy on a lot of these programs. When the increase is cut to 5% from 10% the Democrats scream the Republicans cut the funding, when all that occurred was a a decrease in the increase.

Warren you are either senile, stupid or just plain retarded. My brother instituted the Reagan Tax cuts. At the time he was and to this day still is one of the foremost tax attorney's in the world, he consults governments on tax revenue and mineral resource tax laws. You understand MY brother instituted the Reagan Tax cuts at the dept of Internal revenue as a chief consultant. So now you have shown either how biased you are or just plain stupid When Reagan took office the highest rate over 400 grand was 50% Before Kennedy it was 70%, Reagan took it down to 38% Further reduced to 33%. George H.W. Bush raised taxes just as he knew he must after calling Ronald Reagans economic policy voodo economics which it was. Why Bush lost to Clinton, and Clinton benifited from those tax imcreases. Bias skews the truth in your eyes because you don't like the truth and the repucussions it caused. You are either very rich and selfish which if you just admit, you get my respect for telling the truth, or your not so rich and very stupid. For which there is no excuse PS: My brother warned Ronald Reagan and Donald Regan that massive debt would ensue and was blown off as being told he didn't know what the was talking about. My brother was right. trying to argue with someone who has firsthand knowledge of a situation like this is futile. Your wrong.

The massive debt was created by Bush and Obama. When Regan lowered the tax rates a lot of deductions were eliminated. It's not the tax rates that matter. It's the tax rvenue generated that matters. So, WHY did the Navy Seals(of whom President Obama is Commander in Chief of, which is why he JUST happened to be in the driver's seat) take out OBL ----I know, very hard for you to manage getting your mouth around Commander in Chief, but THAT is what he is.
Well, for one thing----he looked in the right place. For another thing, he seems MUCH more skilled at putting together a team that can put together and correctly assess basic intelligence information. Bush/Cheney couldn't even find WMD with 12 years of previous air, sea and land searching. THEY looked more ridiculous than country rubes at a county fair shell game trying to find the pea. They even had armed aircraft overflights of the "shell game". HOW STUPID CAN YOU BE?

When Dixie was still a puppy, less than a year old----I had a Ford Areo Star van, the kind with the sliding windows on the side. Dixie's place was the seat behind mine by the sliding window.
One day I stopped at McDonalds, I went inside to get something to eat, and when I came back out there were 2 guys, maybe 18 or 19 standing by the open window of the van.
One guy had a box of french fries in one hand and was teasing Dixie with a french fry. He'd hold out the french fry and when Dixie started to take it, he'd pull it back out of reach. He thought it was hilariously funny. Just as I was walking up to the van, he held out the french fry again-----and before you could blink, Dixie grabbed the whole box out of his other hand and jumped in the back seat, away from the window. The guy stood there with a completely dumbfounded look on his face. I got in the van, and he said to me, " HEY, your dog took my french fries!!!"
I said, "Yeah, but you still have your hand." and drove off. I looked in the rear view mirror as I drove off, and he was still standing there holding out the one french fry he still had.
I think it is time to stop getting teased with the french fry and go for the box.

Yes the president is the commander in chief. But don't think for a second Obama had anything to do with crafting the plan. The man is not a military genius. All he did was select one of the options. He chose the right one.
The mistake they've made since is all the public discussion. Obama should have announced to military captured and killed Obama PERIOD. They shouldn't have been talking about all the data they captured. It shouldn't be public information. It's possible the military could have found more key people without knowing they're being pursued.
I won't resort to insults. Insults are for people who lack command of the language and can't articulate themselves properly.

I'm glad Osama was captured. But little changes in the world of terrorism. Don't forget one of the key leads to capturing Osama came as a result of waterboarding in 2007. I realize liberals are having a tough time dealing with this. Leon Panetta admitted waterboarding contributed.

But there's a question about some corruption that would have to be looked into. Gingrich would make an excellent cabinet-level appointee, however, we need someone with his experience and knowledge, just maybe not as president.

Unemployment is at 9%. It's up from last month. Is this a good number? The dollar is slumping. McDonalds provided 25% of the new jobs. Is this good news? Obama continued Bush's bloating of the budget and deficit. Any economic rebound has been essentially jobless. But the economic growth rate has been under 2%. This is not the growth of a rebound. That would be 5-7%. As we head into Obama's third year it's now his economy.
In 2012 it will still be about "the economy, stupid" just like in 1992.I can understand your support of Obama. He's done good things for the gay community. But gay issues are not going to drive the general voting populace. The single biggest issue for Joe Average voter is "Is my wallet healthy?"

Economically he's sunk lower than Bush. Even if you want to claim Obama "salvaged the economy" which I don't believe, the unemployment rate took a turn for the worse this past month. It's Obama's third year in office. It's now his economy. If he's not up to the task it will be time for him to go in 2012.

Obama's hope is the Republicans don't chose a quality candidate. If a quality candidate comes forward and makes the election about the economy, Obama is toast unless the economy heats up. 1.8% growth is considered stagnation. Economies typically rebound at a rate of 5-7%. I know you're not a loon. I enjoy the exchanges. We just disagree most of the time. That's reasonable.

Actually TL he said if Osama Bin Laden was in Pakistan and Parkistan was either unable or unwilling the take him out he would. McCain said at the time that Obama was naive, because he thought America couldn't go into Pakistan to get him. Well the President was right and he kept his promise. Of course, the GOP are upset because they didn't want to get Bin Laden as they have used him to scare people since 2001. Now the GOP can no longer use Bin Laden to pound their chests and say that they are the only ones that can keep Americans safe.
So they have to come up with other ways to discredit the President. Tonight they are claiming the President disrepected the White House by inviting the raper Common to a Poetry Evening. The GOP is calling Common a thug when earlier Fox said Common set a good example for children. The President is twisting them into pretzels and I love it. I hope he keeps making them crazy right through 2012, because they are now revealing their true colors by openly showing they only care about helping Wall Street and the Oligarch.

100% correct. People keep forgetting that never in political history (especially during the time of war and a major recession) has the minority worked so hard to undermind a President. In 2008, the GOP would not recognize that elections matter and in fact said NO to everything. Then in 2010 they believe the country gave them a mandate, NOT!
The President has actually accomplished more in 2-1/2 years then Bush did in all of his 8 years. Also, people have very short memories. The bank bailout was under Bush not Obama. Obama bailed out the auto industry which is a success. GM is hiring and improving their plants in the US not overseas. There is a long list of all the laws signed by the President that was posted on this site a while ago. But he never gets credit for anything.
Now the GOP are now trying to undo all those laws. They want dirty water, dirty air, and the unemployed to stay unemployed while they serve their big contributors believing that this is the way to regain power. They are in for a rude awakening.
Did you see on MSNBC that the new teabag congressmen are whining to Obama to stop the Democrats from telling everyone that they voted to kill medicare and medicaid. I laughed my head off listening to them. They can sure dish it out but they can't take it. They are a bunch of ignorant idiots that do not know how the government works.

I don't think he will tell the Democrat to stop picking on the Repugs. Hopefully he just won't respond. We have to hope that the GOP in the state legislators don't completely ruin the country before 2012.
The GOP in the Senate blocked another one of the President's appointees. This time it's the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Justice. With everything that is happening in states overstepping their authority, the GOP are trying to prevent the DOJ from doing their job. I am so sick of the jerks on the hill blocking everything and holding the country hostage because of their little temper tantrums.
