Westboro Baptist Church protest raises $44,000 for gay men's group

Comedienne Lisa Lampanelli took a unique stand against the anti-gay and vindictive bullies from Westboro Baptist Church, who protested her performance in Topeka on Friday night.

When the Topeka-based hate church targeted Lampanelli for her outspoken position on gay rights, the comedienne fired back earlier this week on Twitter. She promised to donate $1,000 to the Gay Men's Health Crisis, the nation's oldest HIV/AIDS organization, for every member of WBC that protested her show at the Topeka Performing Arts Center.

After her show on Friday, Lampanelli said on Twitter that it appeared there were 44 protesters.

She tweeted, "Thanks to these a-holes, $44,000 will be donated to the GMHC!!!"

The donation to the gay rights charity will made in the name of Westboro Baptist Church.

    • Thankyou...should I ask for, forgiveness?.. Should I say I'm sorry to the gay person that donated tainted aids infested blood that is killing my friend that he got in a blood transfusion. Or the countless others out their. How about the Bi-community..the ones that spread this disease faster..I guess they have right's huh..the right to spread disease and infect as many as possible before they die...Not in my book...You want me to feel sorry because they are sick..I'm not. Nobody should be aloud rights if they are killing people.

      How do you know that he did not contract it from someone else? There where many men and woman both that contracted the virus by unsafe sex and dirty needles, then blood transfusions where to blame. They where embarrassed to tell because people like you would look down upon them.

      If that is that case he was then he got infected in a time when no one knew anything about the virus.

      Wow. OK, trying to be reasonable and civil in response to this...

      1) Your friend didn't get HIV/AIDS from a blood transfusion. All donated blood is tested for HIV/AIDS now. All of it. I'm sorry your friend feels he has to lie to you about how he really contracted the disease (he had unprotected sex with either a man or a woman who was HIV-positive, or he shared a needle with someone who was HIV-positive), but it isn't surprising; he knows you would judge him for his personal choices.
      2) Even if your friend did contract HIV/AIDS from a blood transfusion...how could you possibly know that the donor was gay? They don't give you information about where your blood comes from. That would be a violation of at least a half-dozen federal laws and probably a bunch of state laws too. You do realize that the majority of HIV-positive people are heterosexual, right?
      3) There is no evidence that the existence of bisexuality has accelerated the spread of HIV/AIDS. You're just talking a bunch of garbage without learning your facts.
      4) There are almost no cases on record of anyone intentionally spreading HIV/AIDS. And most of the ones that have been documented were straight people. They have tended to be older straight white males infecting younger females. Meanwhile, the gay community is WAY more active in promoting safe sex, condom usage, and awareness. I live in San Francisco, and I can tell you that in the Castro (sort of the capital of Gay America) there are dozens and dozens of billboards and posters urging HIV-positive people to inform their partners, to use condoms, to help stop the spread. The gay community is trying to stem the tide, while the straight community does...basically nothing.
      5) Even if one were to grant you this insane notion that gay people are intentionally killing others, you should know that murderers absolutely have rights. I don't know where you got this idea that killers shouldn't be allowed rights, but they do have rights. Read the Constitution sometime.
      6) No one's asking for special privileges here. How is it a special privilege to be able to get married to the person you're in love with? The gay couples I know, several of them married, tend to be much more loving, romantic, and all-around successful as couples than the straight couples I know. And you think that should be illegal because you think it's gross?
      7) One final thought: you don't "know he isn't gay." You can't know that. You might think you know. And you might even be right. But you Do. Not. Know.

      Your arguments and grievences are both illogical and unfounded. First of all, anyone can be infected by and distribute a virus. Would you also take away the rights of people with the flu (who apparently are responsible for tens of thousands of flu-related deaths every year in the U.S.)? ...a number that I imagine over the years far outweighs AIDS-related deaths. In any case, the Bible has a lot more to say about hate than homosexuality.

What gets me is that you posted here previously using the ancient, over used, and ridiculous "Adam and Eve" quote and THEN you say that you have no problem with what happens behind closed doors, so you have already contradicted yourself. In all honesty having to hide ones sexuality brings nothing good to anyone, and as far as your "going public" the GLBT community has just as much right to public self expressions as anyone else this includes but is not limited to parades, protests, parties, and even PDA, because BELIEVE IT OR NOT there are people in this world that don't really care to watch a straight couple holding hands and kissing in public.

      As far as rights "there is a concept called 'natural rights.' It explains that each and every human being has specific rights, though they may not be listed. These are fundamental rights that no one should be denied regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, etc.

      So in answer to your question everybody has rights or deserves rights, based on the simple fact that they are a human being.

      Now there is a debate as to what rights gays should and shouldn't have. In the U.S., for example, gays have all the rights listed in the Bill of Rights. These include freedom of religion, freedom of speech and expression, etc. But there is a debate as to whether they need marital rights. Also, even though gays have equality rights they are not always treated equally."

      And the marital rights issue could be resolved if this country could remember the term Separation of Church and State.

      There are more things in heaven and earth, Crusaders, than are dreamt of in your philosophy, so piss off. :]

      I was amazed to see the VFW on the list. I never joined the VFW because they always backed people who started wars knowing full well they could avoid fighting in them. I thought they were about as right wing as one could get. Queen Elizabeth, the Boy Scouts, even Big Bird all on the Westboro mad dogs hit list. If these people were animals they would be captured, killed, and checked for rabies.
