Corporate Media FAIL: The Manufactured Controversy Over President Obama's Remarks on Israel

bambuu
I don't usually write on the Israeli Palestinian conflict, because while I have my views, I am not self educated and informed enough to run commentary on the issue that would be worthy of the quality that TPV has become known for. I don't plan on a departure from that today. But I did think it is extremely important, in light of the recent media bruhaha about what the President said about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for everyone to actually listen to what the President had to say. Here is the President's speech at AIPAC today:
Nothing to add, really. Steven Spiegel of the Israel Policy Forum wrote that the President, with his speech on Thursday, had moved closer to Israel's position, and made a more constructive move towards a peaceful solution. J Street, a pro-Israel, pro-peace organization, commended President Obama's speech on Thursday, as they themselves called for peace negotiations based on the 1967 borders with mutually agreed land swaps. AIPAC itself today praised the President's statement.

That a public statement by the President of the United States advocating for what has been the baseline for negotiations for a long time would set of a firestorm is a statement in and of itself about the pathetic state of our media today. It is also, however, a reflection on our politics - much of which has become based upon knee-jerk reactions to cherry-picked parts of a speech, legislation, etc. It pervades the Right wing noise machine, but today, it also affects the Purity Left noise machine just as well as they, too, concentrate on ginning up people to react rather than to think. Far too often, our media - and our Inboxes - urge us to be outraged, and act from that outrage, rather than for us to think, understand full context and facts, and act out of responsibility rather than simple, raw, ideological rage. Think about this in your personal life: you hardly ever make good decisions when you are angry.

If we are to build a better country, we must rise above that constant barrage of reactionism. There are plenty of things in the world to be outraged about, but outrage must be informed, not ignorant. Ginning up anger in place of presenting facts is responsible for today's media environment that is toxic, unproductive, and unbecoming for a mature democracy.

    • J-Street is just as destructive as AIPAC. We don't need a "left" Israel Lobby to balance out the "right" lobby. It's just an extra lobby that is just as pro-Zionist as the other.

Americans need to understand Israel, but the problem is that the media often doesn't report on Israel, or just basically spews the pro-Israeli propganda ie: the "Muslims want to kill all the Jews," "only democracy in the Middle East" ect.

I found this article this morning that is a primer and a must read for ALL Americans:

"WHY DO MOST AMERICANS KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THESE ISSUES"

by Dr Alan Sabrosky (Ph.D, University of Michigan), a ten-year US Marine Corps veteran and a 1986 graduate of the US Army War College.

muslims dont want to kill the jews.
the muslim arabs in the region have had a social climate in wich the jews have served as the patsies up to the point of death, making them as a majority wanting to kill the jews.

      not tricky stuff.

kind of like how our leaders (left and right alike) have sold us on the benefits to killing arabs wich has multitudes of us seeking that end.

at least they dont have free speech and can be excused to some degree.

    • There will never be any peace in the middle east..... too much hatred between the 2 factions and many that will do anything to keep the conflicts going.... best thing to do is to stay the hell out of there and let things take their course. Let's not take sides and stop pouring money into the mix. Once they have resolved their differences then and only then do I see it worth while throwing money at them to build schools and hospitals if we feel the need to throw our lack of money around? but for now all we are doing is fueling conflict and wars.

It's not as if Israel (a nuclear power) would be left in the cold. But it would send the message that we do not favor violence as a way of resolving issues.

I know I know I'm just a big dreamer thinking that our government would reward those that go out of their way to make peace instead of pouring money into regions that are at war or led by dictators.

Both you and Bambuu are correct. Most Americans do not realize that Netanyahu is a right-wing extremist like half the GOP. Very few News agencies in the States covered the fact that the President was praised by many in the Jewish community in the States for his speech. And as you say, many in Israel want peace as well and are not happy with Netanyahu.

Also, the President did not say anything new. All US Administrations since 1967 have said the same thing. But no, the MSM have to make it look like he is throwing Israel under the bus. They would rather cover the GOPs reaction, which if people would paid attention they would know by now that no matter what this President does, they are going to criticize him. This one-sided American media circus called the MSM is becoming an embrassment.

With the 24 hour news cycle, everyone wants to sensationalize everything that happens, regardless of if it is really an issue. The President is well liked and respected throughout the world. Just look at his reception in Ireland today. Many people in other countries cannot understand why this President is treated with such disrespect, especially after they fawned all over Bush, who was considered by many in the world as the most stupidest President ever.

    • The terrorists, Hamas and the rest, have been trying to destroy Israel since 1948. The islamists don't like Israel and they dont' like us. When Barry ran for office the popular misconception was that his election would ease tensions between our country and the followers of the bearded pedophile. Didn't happen. With BArrys help things are more dangerous than ever. The only thing they will be happy with is total capitulation.
The terrorists will not be happy until Israel is driven into the Med. We need to end the financial support we give the "palestinians" and tell them to behave. Obama is showing his lack of experience and leadership, something a lot of us have been seeing since he took over. The world is a lot more dangerous and this country is in much more danger under his stewardship.

      RRRiiight...

President Obama did get Osama bin Laden and exposed the weaknesses of Al-Qaeda and the Radical Muslims. These terrorists have lost influence over many parts of the world, especially in the Middle East. Barack Obama appeals to moderates everywhere, regardless of religion or race. He has calmed the tensions in the two years he has been in office. It is only the Christian-Conservatives of the U.S. that have been fabricating these issues about Obama's ability to lead and make sure our country stays safe. If you have actual examples and evidence in which Obama is failing to keep the country safe, then by all means, share it. Just make sure it isn't coming from the same people that were pushing the B.S. that Obama was not born in Hawaii and he is a secret Muslim.

One more thing, "islamists" is a really dumb way of saying Muslim. There is no injury towards Muslims to call them "islamists". It only proves the stereotype of an ignorant, ethnocentric "Ameracun". By the way, I wonder how you can claim Hamas and terrorists have been trying to destroy Israel since 1948. Hamas was founded in 1987. At least you got the date right in which the Zionists claimed Palestine to be their promised land of Israel. Do you and your kind realize the territory had been called Palestine for well over a thousand years? It was only in 1967 that the U.N. recognized it as Israel. Hmmm, looks like you could use some "ed-you-kay-tion".

I'm not just another "lib-tard", as you typically label so many here on Current. I have my discrepancies with President Obama, so you can't go assuming I'm a die-hard fan. At the same time, with all Obama's faults, it sucks to admit, I think he has been one of the very people to show he is capable to lead this country in this new era. People like Sarah Palin and Donald Trump would have us going into war just because another leader hurt their precious feelings. As hyped up as Fox & talk radio used to get the ultra conservatives, they have lost their following. I am confident that more Americans would prefer to see religion take a seat and let the more rational minded leaders take the lead. You might get some sort of fulfillment from being snarky and brazen with your comments on Current. But you cant actually believe that you have hurt anyone's feelings or "stuck it to them" when not everyone here follows the same mentality. You just come off as a giant ass that isn't looking to have a discussion, but more interested in immature insults and rants. I pity you. As the saying goes, "Rudeness is a weak man's imitation of strength."

    • the problem is that anyone who stands against isreals policies of mass genocide and destruction is labelled an anti-semite. i dont care if they are jews, muslims, christians or satanists, they are fucking thugs that we support and our support has led the arb world to hate us and terrorism against us to thrive.

we support them because we as a corporate run nation want a muscle man there to get control on the oil if another country moves on it. thats all there is to it. its greed and hatred and wrong.

we need to not only divest ourselves of supporting them, but stand against them when they abuse their power.

but we wont as we are sheep that cant even throw off the shackles of our own corporate/banking masters.

being against israeli policies doesnt make one an antisemite.
stating such things as "mass genocide" in regards to israel is a form of antisemtism, as israel is the only jewish state, and the claim isnt true but serves as a means to demonize them.

how does that assertion hold up to the reality that in 48 thier were about a million and a half palestinians and today thier are over 5 million?literaly genocide in reverse.

so its israels fault when the crazies hit us huh?not the crazies themselves?
it is because of support for israel, despite the reality that they have been up our ass's since before we supported israel?
despite the "big lie" being used, it is our fault not those who went on arab media and claimed the americans and british were bombing egypt in 67 when they werent?
jordan and turkey recieve almost no jihadist targeting despite thier open friendship with israel, but our attacks are cuz of israel?
is this the reality, or are you buying into the propaganda they want you to as part of an attempt to seperate allies in democracy?

we wont cuz thier are only so many free societies in the world willing to stand up to remain free in the face of tyrany and israel is one.everything else is secondary when it comes to the jihaist threat.that is why we are allies.cuz they make us allies, not the other way around that our alliance makes them jihadis.

like israeli land grabs.wich they use to trade for peace.making the land grabs not cuz they are expansionist, but the only choice they have thanks to the regional aggression.no aggression towards israel, no need to dangle a carrot to cease it.

    • I'm not anti semetic and have been on this earth for 73 years and still don't understand this hold Israel has on the U.S.Personally I feel they thoroughly mistreat the Palestinians. When Sharon was alive,he was gloating about the women, children and old defenseless people that had been killed. Why does the US give them money?I read an article that said the Bible justifies their actions.Wasn't the Bible written basically by the Jewish people?I agree with Obama, stick to the contract. There's definitely going to be repercussions for that remark. It appears you can't say anything contrary to the thinking of "some" Jews.Heavy penalties. That lady reporter at the white house for years, made one remark. She was dumped literally before she finished her statement. The guy on CNN,lost his position quick, fast and in a hurry for saying what he believed.Don't know if I'll be around but I hope this will be resolved, soon.

the hold is freedom.we all love it and they are on the front lines defending it.

if those who actively seek to dismantle free societies were doing so from new zealand the relationship we have with israel would be the relationship we would have with australia, as they would be the front lines that we wouldnt want to fall.

the trade mark that seperates legitiamte criticism as opposed to racist espousals are the three d's.no matter what country this is applied to.
if ones method of criticizing another nation is to:
      delegitimize
      demonize
or disproportianalize standards in regards to them
it is a narrative based more in hate speech than legitimate criticism.that is why various people get booted from thier jobs.
from rick sanchez's error in this regard to juan williams doing the same thing to the muslim world.

Extremism over Israel defending themselves against years of attacks? Now I'm laughing. You're an Obama lover. You'll defend anything he does even if he's wrong. Netanyahu schooled him. Now you're trying to defend Obama. Only anti-Semites don't see Israel's point of view. So are you a clinging Obama lover, an anti-Semite, or both?

Extremism is when you look at your man though rose colored glasses and can never admit he's wrong.

it is our concern about our own people that has us supporting israel.

unless the intel gathering on terrorist the cia has done is sufficient in your view?
cuz the gaff that was 9/11 in this regard isnt acceptable to me.wich the israelis knew about and let us know about in advance.too bad on that one we didnt remember how accurate and valuable israeli intel is.

but by all means lets not support israel.lets just hope free societies stand on thier own with our fingers crossed.lets just pretend that if israel falls that would b t end of it, and they wouldnt come after the great satan and just be content to destroy the little satan.

lets just risk our lives watching our cia struggle with thier learning curve, as thier assets keep blowing them up.what could go wrong right?
