Many experts agree that early-childhood reading is essential for building the skills that children will need to learn effectively in elementary school. But how important is it for middle school kids to keep reading? British politician Michael Gove suggests that eleven-year-olds should read 50 books a year. This post shows one parent's reaction to Gove’s statement and also provides a list of 50 great books for young readers.

    • That's a bit much. We are also suposed to drink 8 glasses of water a day, and if I did that I'd be in the bathroom constantly. People are never going to conform to recommendations like that if they are so outlandish.

12 books a year, one a month, makes sense.

Considering most modern reading habits, 6 books a year is a good goal. Plus, it also allows them time to actually have a life.

Actually, kids today read and write a lot more than we did when I was a kid.

Then, it was mostly TV. Other media like radio, and an occasional magazine or comic book, and some pulp fiction would all take a back seat.

Now, it's the web, email, texting, ebooks, blogs, etc- most of their main media seems to be text-based now.

The problem is they have no grasp of gramar and sentence structure.
