What followed wasn’t typical at all: a smack to the head, peacemakers diving about the cabin to intervene and a pair of Air Force F-16 fighter jets scrambling into the night skies over Washington.
It happened late Sunday, just after a United Airlines Boeing 767 bound for Ghana with 144 passengers took off from Dulles International Airport.

Overzealous? Perhaps. But communication in these situations is never clear, and it's better to take precautions than not and risk a bigger disaster and more loss of life.

No, almost always, communications during emergencies is frantic and it gets confusing fast.
How is that spin? Have you ever listened to a police/fire/ems scanner? Give it an hour and you'll have about 7 bogus calls.
This doesn't help me look in the mirror, my devilish good looks do. Spending money on preventing bigger disasters is not a waste... It's preparedness and wise.

They're there to take the plane out if the plane gets hijacked and heads for a target. It's to prevent things like 9/11... The policy has been in place long before that, but for some reason they did not respond on that day, a real shame. This, and along with the drowning, the situation is about preserving life, not promoting death. This is not idiocrasy, it is reasonable and necessary.

Since when is the government here to dictate morals? Are you saying you'd prefer an Theocracy?? And when did I claim omnipotence? That is your claim, and thanks :)
It may be an opinion but at least it's informed. You may have to think outside the box. I know it's scary, but it really helps. Freedom is far more important than safety, and part of that is preserving life and being prepared for any kind of disaster or attack. Had this been a hijacking and no jets scrambled... More than just the passengers would have lost their life and freedom that day.
