The animal is a living reminder of the danger that radiation leakages may pose, reports Italian Corriere TV, branch of the newspaper Corriere della Sera.
The Fukushima nuclear power plant was damaged by the powerful earthquake and the subsequent tsunami on March 11. Authorities evacuated all residents within 20 km as the reactors went into meltdown. The exclusion zone was later extended to 30 km.
The mutant rabbit was born in a village just outside the perimeter.

After all that damage from the earthquakes and tsunami the Japanese need to rebuild their economy again so just like after WWII this gives them all the reasons they need for another generation of Godzilla movies with a flood of other radiation induced mutations.
Godzilla vs. The Mutant Killer Rabbit.
Oh, no! There goes Tokyo, Go Go Godzilla! It worked before to speed their recovery, they can turn lemons into lemonade again

They certainly proved they can make cinematic gold from tragic radiation before, so why not go with what works?

And there were lots of critters born with serious problems, some in Germany and Scandinavia. If wildlife is returning to Chernobyl, it is more likely due to the fact that there aren't many humans there to scare them off.

Is this something I have to watch with the sound on in order to get the absolute horror, because I watched the video muted and it just looked like a rabbit with no ears...
Jebus, I was half expecting the rabbit to split open into a large, sharp toothed maw, and start devouring the other rabbits in a carnage soaked mess.
Edit:
Never mind, I watched it with the sound on, how terrible and horrific to see that a rabbit seems to have been born as a large discolored pika. - 12 months ago

Correlation does not equal causation. I do understand the strong urge to make the leap in this case, though.

This is rather frightening and I know especially the Japanese must be worried. They, more than anyone else on this planet, understand the potential horrors atomic energy.

Is this sad. :( Hard to watch. But it's been proven that radiation causes birth defects in animals and humans. I would be in fear too if I were one of the locals.

Yep. We need to give it time and see what else might turn up in the local animal/bird populations. Time will tell. But it seems likely the risks are real or the people would not be forced to leave the area, don't you think?
