Jon Stewart's Ratings Now Higher Than Fox News

Image
vixxxen618
According to the May Nielson ratings, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart beat the entire Fox News network in terms of total viewers. Stewart averaged 2.3 million viewers, while the Fox News prime time and day time line up averaged 1.85 million viewers.

According to Comedy Central, The Daily Show is dominant in its time slot,

For the month of May 2011, “The Daily Show” averaged 2.3 million total viewers and a 1.2 P18-49 rating. Versus May 2010, “The Daily Show” grew an astounding +19% in total viewers, with incredible double-digit ratings growth across all key demos including P18-49 (up +21%), P18-34 (+22%), P18-24 (+21%), M18-34 (+18%) and M18-24 (+21%).

“The Daily Show’s” 1.344 million P18-49 viewers led all late night talk shows in the demo for the month and, with a 2011 YTD average of 1.25 million P18-49 viewers, “The Daily Show” trails only “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (1.27 million P18-49 viewers) in the benchmark demographic for the calendar year crown.

While Stewart is on the rise, Fox News had a really, really bad May. Total viewership was down 10%, and Fox News lost viewers in the 25-54 demo in every prime time show. Bill O’Reilly was down 9%, Sean Hannity was down 6%, and Greta Van Susteren dropped 12%.

Just how big is the disparity between Jon Stewart and Fox News?

Only The O’Reilly Factor (2.8 million) drew more total viewers than The Daily Show (2.3 million). Jon Stewart beat everything else on Fox News. Stewart beat Sean Hannity by 246,000 viewers. He topped Bret Baier by 399,000 viewers. Jon Stewart beat Glenn Beck by almost 500,000 viewers, 1.812 million to 2.3 million. He beat Shep Smith (1.712 million) and Greta Van Susteren (1.702 million) by almost 600,000 viewers each. When Stewart and O’Reilly go head to head at 11 PM, Jon Stewart tops Bill O’Reilly’s replay by almost a million viewers (2.3 million to 1.321 million).

    • As much as Stewart claims his show is not news, in reality it is. It uses real events, presented in a factual way, satirizing the delivery of "real" news on the event. He also satirizes the individuals that make the "news".

Jon Stewart is more fair and balanced then Faux will ever be.

And who's going to call you a "rat"? Rupert Murdoch? Jon Stewart? So your job is to provide "information" without any proof? Sounds like you're taking a page right out of the Fox News playbook. Give it up bud, your baseless accusations aren't fooling anyone.

Mr .Tibbles ill tell you what? Step out of you way of thinking. OK ..after you finish that; and listen close cause this is the vital part. Every time you hear any bit of news rather it be local or national research it...I am not asking anyone to be a sap and just take my word or anyone else for that matter. But all i am going to say is get off current cause you'll never get the real from a war Profiteering website. Start going underground for your news info. Be an original individual. Good luck tibbles

I get my news from quite a few places, thanks. And yes, by not providing ANY sort of evidence(especially while claiming you have it) when making a claim such as yours, you are indeed asking everyone here to take your word for it. War profiteering website? Please elaborate, I'm begging you......

p.s. - I've done a few searches and have turned up nothing even remotely close to what you are claiming. Just provide me with a single shred of evidence, I promise I'll keep an open mind about it.

And to think, here I was thinking you might actually be able to provide me with something concrete, but alas, you disappoint me once again. You see jamjam, that's how intelligent, logical people debate a subject. One makes a point, then provides evidence to reinforce the aforementioned point. They don't make a wild accusations and when asked for proof say "do your own research, you'll see!". Even better, when someone actually does search for evidence, are unable to find any and thus requests it once more, an intelligent person doesn't reply with "well you're just not looking hard enough!"....And you say I'm the naive one lol.

To be honest, no, I don't believe Jon Stewart is being "paid off", especially if it's to tone down his attacks on Fox News. If you've ever watched his show, you'd know that Stewart rips on Fox News almost every episode. He's almost single-handedly turned Fox into a joke in the eyes of many Americans. Not exactly "toning it down" if you ask me.

You had a dog named mr_tibbles you say? That's interesting, did he talk to you and tell you that the aliens are coming to get you? Or that the CIA put a chip in your head and are secretly reading your thoughts? You should be careful, I've heard that only tin foil can prevent them from reading your mind, but I'm sure you already knew that considering how often you go "underground" for your information. Ok ok now I'm just having too much fun with this. I'll stop.

In all honesty though, there's no point in arguing with you any further. You obviously get off on making stupid accusations and then trying to convince everyone that you have proof even though you refuse to provide them with any. You're full of it, and everyone here knows it. Have a nice day jamjam.

Well, you can claim all you want, with all the evidence you want. However, the lack of exposing that evidence will lead people to believe that you are: a) lying, or b) trolling.

Proving your POV with facts is the best way to convince others, not "holding their hand". Unfortunately, you don't really care about points or facts it seems, and are only being a contrarian for the sake of argument. Or because you don't like Stewart. Or both.

It's cool guy, do your thing; guys like you detracting from the topic without saying anything of relevance or validity tend to self-destruct or not last long.

You still get more truth out of him than the actual evening news without the corporate slant. Bill Moyers was just on his show and he gave Jon kudos!

    • What does this say about our news delivery system? It is a joke. When people prefer the comedic overview of the daily events to the news as presented, there is something rotten somewhere. Millions of viewers have come to the conclusion that major media news organizations are full of shit. Marketing mechanisms that they are, they have no interest in presenting or finding the truth as it relates to working men and women. What they don’t show is more important than what makes onto the air. The American public is finally waking up to the big lie. In the past we have been duped into trusting Wall St., the “free market” and the evening news anchors. They are all part of the same system. The advertisers always come first and news is perverted to suit their desires. I personally believe the media moguls don’t even need outside prodding, it is done in their own selfish interest. They have their own empires to control and the pro-corporate image projected by their news organizations adds to their swagger. And, by the way, congratulations to Jon Stewart, he is at the top of his game.

Fox News a major media news organization? Comedian or not, Jon Stewart has more credibility than they do. But I don't know how you draw a false equivalency between Fox and every other new organization in the world. Evening news has a limited time to air a certain amount of news. It's not the ultimate system for depth of subject, to be sure.

Corporate media outlets care about corporations first. Labor issues get short shrift, if they get covered at all. If it wasn’t for the new crop of commentators at MSNBC, (Maddow, Schultz and others), many of these issues wouldn’t see the light of day. The major networks in NYC are more concerned with the friendly banter between the weather person and the traffic guy. How often are there any real investigative pieces done anymore? Let’s get real here. Maybe the tide is turning because the major issues, like unemployment, are not going away. I just hope for better times, both economically and journalistically. http://sibob.org/wordpress/

No, I agree in principle. I'm thinking more in line with anchors like Brian Williams when I talk about the false equivalency. Note that Fox doesn't have a national media desk like the other networks, all news is divvyed up (sp.?) either locally or through the national propaganda machine. Local TV news is a joke. Our Fox affiliate thinks that what happens on American Idol is news. They also like to string together like stories to give viewers the impression that there is a "trend" going on, which serves to propogate fear. That's why on some nights they'll show three straight house-fire stories, or a string of loosely related crime stories etc. So we all sit there and say to ourselves, "What the f*** is going on out there?" and hide in the corner sucking our thumbs with our teddy bears.

Calling out other news networks for their lack of journalistic integrity is not a "perception" of reality. It's real. Just because he does it with a laugh or a joke doesn't make it any less disgusting that the media is corrupt. And the fact that he does it to both the left and the right makes it even MORE relevant. You just let it all soak in.

And BTW- I get my political comedy from a political comedy show.
I get my news from various news sources, not just one view.

Since your idea of news IS so comical, that's why you can't tell the diference.

AT this point in time, after everything that has been revealed about News Corp and FOX News, no sane rational human being could ever consider them to be "fair and balanced".

Americans' educations are very lacking, but at least we still have some common sense in the populous. How can we watch the Egyptian Spring and not reconsider how much we respect and value not having a dictatorship where everything from personal decisions to thoughts and ideas are silenced and spoken for us and at us by others.

The social responsibility that accompanies freedom requires respect of differences - of all people. NO ONE in America is "better" than anyone else.

But I urge everyone to have an open mind to new ideas. We can have thoughtful debate without calling each other "morons" "koch suckers" or "racist kkk". I try to be respectful of the ideas of liberals here at current. i cant say i havent flew off the handle a few times. But i really dont think you guys are stupid. You guys are smart people. Beck is merely regurgitating conspiracy theories that have been around since the John Birch Society. You haven't heard news people talk about it because such paranoid thinking was rejected by mainstream America when Joe McCarthy lost credibility back in the 1950s.
The first president I voted for was Ronald Reagan in 1979. It only took a few years to realize what a horrible mistake I had made and I have become more progressively liberal the older I get.
I have come to see conservatives as short-sighted and stingy, and liberals as far-sighted and generous.
Conservatives like to believe they are the party of God but Jesus was clearly a liberal if not a downright communist according to the gospels!

There are all kinds of people on this planet, and some people really are morons, some really are racists, some really are asses.

There is a diference between name-calling, and calling it as you see it.

You are right that not everyone one disagrees with are necessarily those things- for example, Newt Gingrich is an ass, but he's not stupid. Sarah Palin is stupid- she actually is. She is simply and objectively a person of low intelligence.

You have made a great deal of improvement in your time here- when you first started posting, you were just a troll. You are now a contributing person with conservative leanings.

I'm sure you realize there are people, both on this website and on the public stage, who are batshit crazy. I see nothing wrong with pointing that out!

Yes, we should have open minds to new ideas- that means listening to the ideas, evaluating them rationally and objectively, and discarding them when they do not pass muster.

An open mind does not simply consider all ideas to be equally valid.

I've watched The Daily Show ever since Craig Kilbourn was host back in the 90s, with his 5 Questions.

    • This has been coming for a long time, and it's a natural progression. A "news" service such as Fox, which is based solely on lies, has to come up with even more lies on a daily basis.

As those lies add up, they eventually begin to run out of new viewers, and their established viewers will slowly leave as their tolerance level is reached. Fox will always retain their hard-core crazies, who will believe literally anything, but fortunately that's a relatively small percentage of the total population.

My guess is that Fox will eventually reach a point where they will have to change their entire programming format. There is no way they can recover even the little credibility they once enjoyed. It's a lot like being caught lying under oath in court. From that point forward, any time that person appears in court, their reputation as a known perjurer will follow them.

CNN tries to be neutral but omissions about the palestinian problem for example, are disgusting. The reason they hate us in the middle east is because our blind support for Israel. They have enough videos and testimonies to show that Israel is treating the palestinians as they were treated by the nazis. Our support should not be like bush support but like obama support. Israel wants their entire land and we should stop that . Keep what you have but palestinians deserve a state too. Too many jewish lobbyists to buy our politicians. We must be fair. Hi Dave. I like to watch certain shows on MSNBC. Particularily Ratchel Maddow, mainly because she covers story that are not covered by other MSM. However, your point is well taken. I still prefer watching Canadian News and BBC News. They ususally report the news in an unbaised way and it's not stressful because there is no vitriol. I occasionally watch Jon Stewart, but because he is on Comedy Central he is on either too early or too late for me so I'm not a regular viewer. However, it really says a lot about what is happening in the States when a Comedy Show is more honest presenting the news then so-called News Agencies.

There is no comparison between MSNBC and FOX. They are not two sides of the same coin.

MSNBC has a liberal political voice, and does not hide that fact. They have actual reporters, actual researchers, and present actual news.

FOX News is a conservative propaganda machine that blatantly manipulates the public with outright lies to further their agenda, while claiming to be "fair and balanced".

      You say:
"And MSNBC spreads propaganda to convince you the Democrats are working for your interests."

      False.
MSNBC promotes a liberal ideology, but will rip into Democratic politicians.
FOX, however, is simply a branch of the Republican party.

Again- I'm not saying MSNBC has no bias, but there is a HUGE diference between bias and propaganda.

      You say:
"All corporate owned media is promoting the same agenda..."

No, most of them simply want ratings.
If it bleeds it leads, dirty laundry, sex scandals, etc.
That doesn't mean they are all propaganda machines like FOX.

      You say:
"Real journailists work in the print media, cable news is just a bunch of talking heads."

      My God, you are old.
Real journalists use an Underwood typewriter, not some fancy word processor!

    • foxnews makes me laugh more than jon stewart when they say that they are "fair and balanced". Foxnews is a comedy channel with clowns like Sarah Palin "the reader"., O'reilly the "mister know shit", Glenn Beck "the retard",. Palin is mad at Katie Couric because she asked her the "tricky" question of " what newspapers and magazines do you read". another "tricky " question of what Supreme Court cases decisions do you disagree with?. Now she may run for President?. Fox news commentator? Only retard people believe this clowns.

    • Finally, people are actually tuning in more on the truth! Its been proven that people who watch the Daily Show have a better clue on what is going on in our country than any other news network.

    • Of course his ratings are higher. He puts them all to shame in the form of comedy. While 24/7 news spins away the shame. Jon Stewart shines a light on the lies. Up is down, comedy is news? He who tells the truth wins? Sadly, the answer is yes, yes, yes.
