It is important to note here that Bashar al-Assad's father General Hefez Assad ordered the massacre of between 30,000-40,000 of his own people, many of them believed to be members of the Muslim Brotherhood. He ordered the bombing of an entire city, Hama, because of its anti-Baath party criticism.
