Suit against retail giant covered 187,000 current and former Penn. employees
Wal-Mart Stores Inc has lost its appeal of most of a $187.6 million verdict for Pennsylvania hourly workers who accused the world's largest retailer of denying them meal and rest breaks.
A three-judge panel of the Superior Court of Pennsylvania on Friday said there was sufficient evidence for Philadelphia jurors in 2006 to conclude that Wal-Mart's practices violated state wage and hour laws. It also said Wal-Mart's own internal review uncovered violations regarding "off-the-clock" work.
The case was brought on behalf of about 187,000 current and former Wal-Mart workers in Pennsylvania from 1998 to 2006.

Good old Wall Mart, why are people still shopping there? Find a strong local store to support, its better for the economy, the things you buy will be of a better quality, and you do not support the consistent intentional oppression of employees.

I live in a small town and there are a lot of elderly that live out in the sticks and their only transportation is a little green bus that picks them up,it only goes to Walmart and they can get everything they need "for cheap" and they can socialize. If not for the Walmart here, a lot of these people would be shut ins and have to rely on others to bring them the things they want.I couldnt even imagine if they could get to town how they would be expected to go to every store to get things or how they could afford it. Is Walmart perfect ...nope, but in some places its a damn good thing.

People adapt to any situation, you can adapt to being homeless, the point is that it makes their lives better. It sounds like you are saying screw old people I would rather bring down Walmart. I would add that there are a lot of people employed there also....a lot.It keeps some from having to go on welfare and some work there as extra income to help while one spouse is laid off from one of the few factories. When you live out in the sticks people are not going to just run out and get you all the time, before old people that couldnt drive had to wait until one of their kids came and got them...or worse just bring them things and then leave them again.I guess you could say they could order off the internet to get things other than food but ,I can barely get my 83 yr old grandmother to be able to use her cell phone,a computer would do her in.

Walmart is another one of those corporate entities that is “too big to care”. They push their way around, killing small business, exploiting their workforce, (both here and abroad), and getting their way. The pittance that was awarded in this case does not even give these people pause. They swat it away like a gnat. They will continue to do what they do. It is not always a case anymore of being able to choose the local businessman over the megastores. In many areas the small business owners have been driven out of the market. It is more likely to come down to a choice between one exploiting superstore or the other. That is why Walmart keeps growing, because they manage to undersell even their corporate competitors. The best solution to this problem is to stop buying crap that you don’t need, from any source. The thinking goes that consumers drive our economy. But, what are we actually driving? We mostly engage Chinese factory workers, container ship crews, (mostly foreign), truck drivers, and minimum wage retail workers. If we ever hope to turn this thing around we have to drive these corporate entities out of business by boycotting the stores, at least for things other than absolute necessities.

One of the best things you can do for your community is to stop shopping at Wal Mart. Support your local businesses even if it means spending an extra 20 cents or a buck. It's a Big Picture thing.

the problem is in lots of communities there are no other choices anymore.
There are whole small towns where the largest building is the walmart, and there just is no place else to shop.

Right. Have you seen that commercial where the ding-dong is at the Wal-Mart register whining because something is being sold for 20 cents cheaper at another store, and they all go "Match it! Match it! Match it!" Goddamn commercial makes me want to scream. That's all about undermining Mom & Pop, which is the essence of their business plan.

Walmart's annual revenue: ~421.9 billion dollars. They were fined 187.6 million. This amounts to a whole .04% of their total revenue. Honestly, will Walmart bat an eye? These wrist slaps are ridiculous.

In simple terms, we're both right. But yeah, that was basically my point: a mere $22 fine...
Even if you consider only their net-income, it's only 1.1%, which is a pretty petty fine for an offense such as this.

Please don't shop there. I am happy to hear this positive outcome that most certainly makes a difference in those people's lives. More people than 187,000 have been put out due to the business practices of this made in China...destroy diverse local efforts at life...strive for less than mediocrity....ensure a disposable lifestyle monstrosity of an empire. They don't care...and they don't care that you know that because most people will still "save" money by shopping at walmart
