Obama Booed at Netroots! Some Liberals Frustrated by Pace of Obama's Change!

MINNEAPOLIS — What's a frustrated liberal to do? Democrats on the ideological left are grousing that President Barack Obama is just not that into them, and they're soul searching at a big weekend meeting about the strained political relationship as he seeks re-election.
President Barack Obama has bred frustration in the progressive community. (Photo: Reuters / Larry Downing)
Might they stay home when he asks them to vote for him again?
"We were promised he would be our fierce advocate. And I don't think he has been fierce and I don't think he likes to advocate very much," said John Aravosis, an editor with AMERICAblog who has written about gay rights issues.
But Obama's advisers hope that between now and November 2012 the president can persuade this critical part of his base to turn out in droves again, and the wooing by aides was well under way Friday.
"I promise he is as frustrated as you are," White House Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer told about 2,400 bloggers and activists attending the annual Netroots Nation conference. He assured them they were "a very important part of the coalition that got him here."
Not that it feels that way for many liberals who consider Obama's record a mixed bag at best when it comes to championing their causes.
They see him as being too willing to compromise with Republicans on such issues as dropping the proposed public option for the health insurance overhaul and extending George W. Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthiest. They're pleased he signed a law to repeal the ban on openly gay service members, but many feel that happened only after incessant pressure on the White House.
Others complain that Obama has embraced big business, unimpressed by Wall Street regulation changes and annoyed that Obama appointed General Electric chief executive Jeff Immelt to lead a presidential advisory council on competitiveness even as the company avoided paying federal taxes in 2010.
One panel at the conference reflected the rift: "What to Do When Your President Is Just Not That Into You." Moderator Joan McCarter jokingly called it "The 'president isn't our boyfriend anymore' panel."
Taken together, it all raises the question of whether liberals, who always play important fundraising and volunteering roles for Democratic presidential candidates, will be energized when Obama runs for re-election next year or whether they will stay home on Election Day and deny Obama a critical contingent of grass-roots foot-soldiers.
It's not as if liberals are likely to back someone else. Obama doesn't have a serious Democratic primary opponent, and liberal views are ideologically opposed to many espoused by the Republican Party's presidential candidates.
"We have to hold this administration accountable, but we will get a choice between President Obama and our worst nightmare," said Lily Eskelsen, vice president of the National Education Association.
To a certain degree, there's a political upside for Obama if liberals are cranky — he may appear to be more a centrist candidate and that may make him more attractive to the independent voters who often decide close elections.
Obama advisers acknowledge the base is frustrated, but they expect liberal voters to rally around the president in next year's election.
"While there is always more work we can do and we take absolutely nothing for granted and will work every single day, we have very good support from his base and are ready to build on that," said Obama campaign manager Jim Messina in a recent interview with The Associated Press.
Despite the complaining, liberals' impressions of Obama have not slipped in recent months. But they didn't improve, either, following the killing of Osama bin Laden, as happened among other ideological groups.
In the May AP-GfK poll, 62 percent of liberals rated Obama's presidency as outstanding or above average, statistically similar to August 2010. Among moderates and conservatives, however, Obama's ratings on this question ticked upward. Likewise, Obama's overall approval ratings among liberals have hovered around 80 percent for the past year in AP-GfK polling, with no discernible bump following the al-Qaida leader's death.

Impossible job period! I didn't vote for Obama, but I can tolerate him. Isn't that one of the qualities of a good leader? You have to admit if John McCain said or did some of the things Obama has- this site, the press, and Jon Steward would all be a screaming. I missed the show where the Afghan deaths under Obama equaled those under Bush. Was that funny Jon? The Bin laden strike, the Libya thing, fiscal responsibility...every speech right out of the conservative handbook. So why don't we all just pretend we are all soldiers in the military sworn to follow the trials and tribulations of the commander in chief and see what has or not improved during his first term?
Every liberal lost is a moderate gained. Any practical Democrat knows that much. - 11 months ago

I asked my right wing friend what was the best thing W Bush did for him. He said he cut his taxes, I believe he was correct. What is the best thing he did for me?
I dont know? I did some good for others. Guy rights, children on parents until thier 26. I guess he let me be a prouder american than I was under W.
My wish list:
Single payer health care, close Guantonimo, hold Bush and Chaney accountable for thier actions, end the wars and the patiot act, remove the limit on income paid to social security, another housing tax break, hold wall street accountable. Grow a pair! Deliver to us like Bush did for his group. - 11 months ago

If you can bash Obama after what we went through with the Bush administration, you may be either getting paid to do it, or you have been misled. Or for some reason, the welfare of the people in the US (or the world) doesn't matter to you.

Anybody who finds something good about Obama is either deaf and dumb or just plain....oh well the USA was not made for the people that was another lie. Obama was not elected he was thrown on us by the CFR who called he and Hilary in for orders. And the people think they elected him. This country will never be for the people or the land of the free until a man with guts and intelligence is sent to Washington by the people. A man who has the guts to Outlaw the Federal resesrve Bank and tell the Wealthy elite to kiss ass. To elect outlaw national or foreign contractors to run this country is arrogant. It has been repoprted lately how Netanyou slapped Obama and insulted the American People. The Israeli AIPAC has more influence in running American National and foreign policy than Obama or any other president over the past 100 years. There will never be peace until The central banks are bankrupted and the wealthy bankers are sent to prison for life for wars against humanity for profit. So far Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are the only two who have the platform if they don't turn a back flip. My choice would Be Kucinich for President and Ron Paul for V.P. And besides Henry Kissinger praised Obama for being such a loyal globalist and his wife said she supports his goal of world domination.so please stop saying that Bush left him a mess. That is true but he did nothing but continus Bush's entire mess like he was just continuing the Bush mess until the final stage is completed. And he should have started to recall all of those triilions of dollars that his treasury gave the wealthiest elite who had just bankrupted the USA even further. We have gone from a balanced budget and billions of dollars in debt to being trillions of dollars in debt to being indebted to the world bankers and with China owning majority of America and Obama and the system borrowing from china. this is crazy.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, this was the post to get it off your chests. I fear sometimes our memories are short, Ziggy gave us all somethings to try and remember, and we must never hand over the strings of power to the crooked Republicans until they gain their sanity again. Two years ago we stayed
home and it cost us the House, another road block in progress. We are all to be held responsible for letting that happen, tyrants all those rethugs have proven to be. How many JOBS has Bonner with a big B created with his band of idiots at the pursestrings? Hey we've got about 7 more comments to make 400, lets get er done!!!!! - 11 months ago

"Professor Watson writes
Hi friends,
I am always being asked to grade Obama's presidency. In place of offering him a grade, I put together a list of his accomplishments thus far. I think you would agree that it is very impressive. His first six months have been even more active than FDRs or LBJs the two standards for such assessments. Yet, there is little media attention given to much of what he has done. Of late, the media is focusing almost exclusively on Obama's critics, without holding them responsible for the uncivil, unconstructive tone of their disagreements or without holding the previous administration responsible for getting us in such a deep hole. The misinformation and venom that now passes for political reporting and civic debate is beyond description.
As such, there is a need to set the record straight. What most impresses me is the fact that Obama has accomplished so much not from a heavy-handed or top-down approach but from a style that has institutionalized efforts to reach across the aisle, encourage vigorous debate, and utilize town halls and panels of experts in the policy-making process. Beyond the accomplishments, the process is good for democracy and our democratic processes have been battered and bruised in recent years.
Let me know if I missed anything in the list (surely I did).

Happy Fathers Day President Obama.
A Case For Obama's Accomplishments or Why Isn't The Truth Good Enough?
Recent observations of late find me in an interesting frame of mind today. It seems that I cannot comment about someone without someone, or many someone's, having to throw President Obama into the conversation and although I am used to that happening after all my years on the radio and defending the positions I have come to learn, embrace and defend, I do tire from not just having to defend those positions but from the utter frustration that people can't seem to allow one argument to stand alone.
My column about Sarah Palin yesterday drew expected response by both sides and as expected many of those who opposed my premise on Ms. Palin had to force the Obama card on me. What's the Obama card? Well, that is a moving target but because of the masterful way the Republicans owned the media message over the past two years, and mostly because the Democrats allowed them to, much to their own demise, I'll once again remind people that where you get your information is as important as IF you get information.
Now, and I mean this with respect, I know many of my contemporaries on the other side of my positions have a political bent and they feel compelled to defend those position at all cost. I don't feel drawn to that philosophy mostly because in all the years I was in radio I had to know both sides of an issue in order to be articulate and be informed on any issue, so for occupational reasons mostly I come to this fight with a different skill set than most. With that explanation I would like to answer the latest Obama charge that in his two years in office President Obama has accomplished nothing. This idea is solidly seated in the idea promoted by Republicans of the 111th Congress and even though not true, the idea seems to be alive and well and living in America, so without further adieu allow me to present a PARTIAL list of accomplishments of President Obama and then a few parting remarks so I can move on from this issue for the last time.
Under Obama:
Signing the SALT Treaty
Massive Wall Street reform
The Stimulus Bill (TARP)
Fair Pay Act allowing for equal pay for women
Hate Crimes Prevention Act
Allowing the FDA to regulate tobacco
Reformed the Student Loan program saving millions of people millions of dollars
The humane Repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell
The extension of unemployment benefits
Health Care Reform
There have been more jobs created in the last two years under President Obama than under the eight years of George W. Bush
We are paying the lowest taxes than we have in 60 years
Tax Credit for new Home Buyers
Cash for Clunkers that basically reignited the auto industryMost modern day historians have stated that President Obama has effected more change in his first two years than in all the years of Bill Clinton and George W. Bush combined and even though I will recognize that we might not agree that some of these reforms were accomplishments, they are no matter how you slice it. Either by Party line vote or majority vote this president has successfully created change that matters and he has done all of that while being constantly criticized and cajoled from both sides of the aisle. I say that's progress.
One note of caution: if you feel hell bent of taking me to task on this list let me remind you I have factual data that proves the benefit of every single issue on that list and will not tolerate uttering that are obvious talking points of the Republican Party; so save that pabulum for someone else, say your like minded friends perhaps.
At a time where winning your talking point seems more important than truth I have finally drawn a line in the sand. Enough already. Let's start talking facts and stop worrying about what Party is winning and start celebrating that America is winning. Of course as I type this I wonder how many of my detractors have even read to this point.
I think it's great that George W. Bush supported a national law on minimum wage shocking the Republican world, but he did do that and I gave him props for that, so you see I am not a total partisan. I know Republicans do good things too and when they do I write about it, honestly I do.
Feel free to comment and send the inevitable e-mails but I will not be inclined to be very cordial if I have time to respond. Do your own homework and you'll see the list I presented is good stuff, for all of us, so get over yourselves already!

Maybe the frustrated Progressive Liberals should ask the former Democratic controlled Congress why they didn't enact a whole shit-pot load of Progressive Liberal legislation for the short time they thought they were in control. There is where the problem lies, not with the President, but rather with the incompetent, lazy, cover-my-ass, disloyal Congressional Democrats. The President probably is having a hard time remembering he is there to drain the swamp because he's up to his ass in alligators, from both partys. No other president has faced the challenges he's had to face in the past two years, right out of the gate. Even Roosevelt had a breathing space, but not Obama. I, personally , feel he's getting the shitty end of the stick from both sides. Perhaps it's his way of handling events and people that make him seem like an easy tatget, or perhaps it's racial. At any rate, I feel that the criticisim of him is largely unwarrented and snarky, especially from within his own party. I'll probably get a lot of snarky personal attacks for this, but ....eh! screw it.

Barack Obama and the Wall Street cavalcade he surrounds himself with would have you and I believe he is caught in an untenable position, "...It's those darn Republicans fault." The facts do not, in the remotest sense, bare this out.
He uses the Republican Party as his "beard" so to speak, a convenient foil to hide his true character, government and economic philosophy and intent.
He would have us believe...
_His frustration led him to oppose mortgage cram-down resulting in countless 1000's of foreclosures?
_Said frustration forced him to (with his CoS, one Rahm Emmanuel) force down the public option through a filibuster? This had nothing to do with a trade-off to get Rep support, as there never was such support or votes.
_His back was to the wall?, forcing him to send anti-teacher's union, pro-school privatization advocates (Michelle Rhee, a friend of the President and Hari Sevugan, Obama's pick as the Democratic National Committee spokesman) to Republican governor controlled states, Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan, Florida, Utah, to mentor the architecture of school privatization. HE HAD NO CHOICE???
_He had no choice but to appoint Eric Holder, A Wall Street attorney and advocate as AG and said AG "just had to" double the potential prison sentence of Don Seigelman as retribution for appealing his highly questionable conviction by the Alberto Gonzales Justice Department?....and Mr Holder "had no choice" but to collude with Cisco in seeking a 500 year prison sentence for a former Cisco employee whistle-blower? (see David Sirota's piece in SALON). The Obama "Justice" Dept was forced by Republicans to prosecute more whistle-blowers--contrary to a campaign promise--than ALL previous presidents combined? This "Justice" Dept HAD TO (those damn Republicans made me do it) seek more indictments, arrests and prosecutions of medical marijuana growers and users in 2.5 years than the Bush previous 8 years? Somehow the Rep forced him on this?
_The Bush tax cuts for the wealthy (now the Obama tax cuts for the wealthy) were forced on him? BUT, with Bill Clinton at his side, explained said tax cuts would stimulate the economy and create jobs (sound familiar?). Poor Barack, he was forced to "suddenly become" a supply-sider? Likewise, he was coerced into freezing the wages of modest income Federal workers? (with inflation = a pay cut)...a slap down to demand-side economic theory. Milton Freedman somehow came back from eternity and "forced" our hapless President into this economic theory conversion? WOW a miracle!!!
_Likewise the Rep Party shoved, pushed, coerced Barack Obama to become an enabler and protector of torturers and sociopaths, even threatening the Spanish and Italian justice dept not to prosecute our crimes against humanity...OR ELSE!
_The fact that he was the 1st president in over 20 years to propose to the International Whaling Commission the resumption of the hunting and slaughter of whales was the Republican's fault?, even though this WAS NEVER a part of the Rep agenda. Huh?
_Every time he kisses up to Wall Street, every time he ignores their complicity in destroying our economy and nation' future, every time he refuses to speak to demand-side economists like Nobel Prize winners Krugman and Stilitz, every time he tells his base to "sit down and shut up you fucking moronic liberals" (thus spoke his brain, Rahm Emmanuel), he really doesn't want to...look close and you'll see a Republican with a gun to his head. How many "R's" are in fat chance?
Barack Obama, right now, is putting together Wall Street friendly proposals to start the process of privatizing Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and our nations educations system (as you will see with his "compromise" over the budget). He lied to you/me/US during the 2008 campaign and will do the same this time around. He is the HOOD-WINKER-in-CHIEF, and a supply-side, trickle-down advocate. His flowery speeches lead to nothing but aromatic crap. He may not be a Tea Partier, but he IS a Wall Street Republican. Don't be fooled by the "D" behind his name.
The Democratic Party must be purged of this fraudulent ilk. They take space on the tickets and force to the wings real Democrats. Barack Obama will not GET MY VOTE IN 2012, and, if it is the only way to send an unmistakable message to the Party powers-that-be, god forgive me!!! I may vote Republican in 2012. THE TRAVESTY THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY HAS FOISTED ON US MUST BE CONFRONTED, ADDRESSED AND REBUFFED!!!

I think Obama was just another guy who thought he could change things and than went into office got smacked with the tidal wave that is our government the rest is history. And to any one that runs for office good luck with that.

Ever hear of the Bilderberg Group? The Council on Foreign Relations? The RIIA (Royal Institute of International Affairs)? The United States is administered, not governed, from Washington, D.C. The United States is governed from New York and London. We all need to be lucid, informed and understanding citizens. The more ignorant we are about who is ruling the country, the more at risk we are and the more like slaves we become.

Those "some liberals" seem like they're the ones that know there own rights, but not the rights of others. Thinking their own opinion is the only one, and that things just get fixed over night.
Poor guy. He's been given the task of making all Americans happy. It's an impossible fete. Good luck Obama. My advice is get your family out of politics. You're to good for this nonsense.

This is where I think Obama is being treated unfairly. Because if anyone looks at at any of the last POTUS's record on gay rights since Stonewall (which I was there) Obama has done far more for gay rights then any other potus in the history of the US.
And there is only so much Obama can do as POTUS like Barney Frank said the gay community need to be contacting their local politicians if they want change. And I just don't understand why the gay community has never made the demands on any other POTUS like they have on Obama.
I just wish the younger "armchair" gay community activist would stop listening to Dan Choi, Hamsher and Aravosis they are only out for themselves.
My partner and I support Obama 100% and pay absolutely no attention to the aforementioned people since they do more harm then good. Those of us who are older and who have been around from the beginning know that Obama has done more for gay rights and we respect his own personal views which hasn't gotten in the way.
The younger gay community need to realize that getting what you want starts from the bottom up.

Pissed off, so what are you going to do, vote for a Republican?
Go a head, elect Romney, Gingrich, Bachmann, Herman (Mr. religious test) Cain or any one of the other clowns...what the hell, let gets Cheney back in there, that will teach Obama a lesson.

Because a vote for any third party is exactly the same as a vote for the Republican party.
It just takes a vote away from the Democrats in what will be a close election.Look at 2000, when Al Gore lost to GW Bush. If Gore had the votes that went to Ralf Nader, he would have won.
Let's encourage conservatives to vote for a third-party candidate instead.
