NBC omits 'under God' in Pledge

BETHESDA, Md. — An omission in the Pledge of Allegiance had NBC issuing an on-air apology Sunday during the U.S. Open.

The network opened its broadcast with a montage that included children reciting the pledge, but the words "under God" and "indivisible" were omitted.

The backlash on social media was quick and harsh, with some tweets calling for a boycott of NBC.

"We began our coverage of this final round just about three hours ago, and when we did it was our intent to begin the coverage of this U.S. Open championship with a feature that captured the patriotism of our national championship being held in our nation's capital for the third time," announcer Dan Hicks told viewers. "Regrettably, a portion of the Pledge of Allegiance that was in that feature was edited out. It was not done to upset anyone, and we'd like to apologize to those of you who were offended by it."

But in the apology, they still failed to mention what portion had been omitted.

    • Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe they just couldn't find any footage of any kid saying the words "under god" with a straight face?
I can tell you I know when i was in Elementary school, i could never get through the whole pledge without cracking up.
It was just so ridiculous to be swearing an oath of devotion to a piece of cloth.
It's easy to definitely see why they didn't add "under god" to the pledge until the 50's.
The authors of the founding documents of our nation would have thrown a fit if they had lived to see children claiming that the United States is "under" ANY god.
Maybe the children filmed by NBC shared the foundational principles of our nation, and so cracked up when they got to the word "under".
I'm surprised so many were able to regain their composure enough after the mention of "god" for NBC to finish their montage.

Honestly I dont think the founding fathers would have really minded the under god bit. They were all deists, they believed in a god, they just refused to define that god. For the most part the rest were Christians, at least in name, most were not very devout as it were. The founding fathers would have taken issue with a lot that is going on in our society today but that one they wouldn't have really cared about. At least in my opinion, but who am I to say I have just read what our founding fathers have written, not all that tripe about what they wrote that so many would wish us to read. That being said really who cares, we need to stop focusing on what divides us and spend some time on what unites us, really we should care little for meaningless words. They are in the end just words no more, no less.
