KB723
MSNBC host Cenk Uygur speaks with Lt. Dan Choi (fired over DADT) and Brian Ellner of Human Rights Campaign on if President Obama has done enough to fight for gay right. They also discuss gay marriage rights possibly coming to New York.

"As long as BO never totally comes to the table, this will continue to be just another half assed approach!!!"

      You say:
"If your gay and you support Obama, your an idiot."

Allow me to correct your spelling errors:

If you're gay and you DON'T support Obama, you're an idiot.

You just needed three little contractions there.
      You are welcome.

Us gays are smart enough to tell the diference between Obama, who has not yet done enough, and the Republicans, who want to put us in concentration camps.

    • I only learned yesterday why civil unions or domestic partnerships aren't good enough for the LGBTs. The only way that states outside of those with marriage equality are forced to recognize a union is if the couple is actually married. Never having understood the difference I've always wondered why the big ado over I do's. Has Obama tried to to bring about more equality for the LGBT community? Yes. Has he completed the job? No. We haven't had a bigger advocate for equality since Truman. The problem with equal rights though is it's not really equal unless it is totally equal in every aspect. The next big question is has he done enough to earn our vote again. Lt. Choy say's not for him. I would have to ask Lt. Choy if this means he will abstain from casting a presidential ballot or will he vote for a Romney a Palin or even a Gingrich. With a second term and a democratic house and senate who knows what positive things could be done for all of the progressive community.. Not only on the LGBT front but in all the other social and political issues that concern liberals.Call me a dreamer.

Hi ... Thanks for the video link. Lt. Choi is right, of course, but the whole picture is much bigger. I was one of those who sat in front of the TV waiting to see the first gay Bishop speak at the innaugural festivities (as advertised) but the TV coverage didn't include it. The homophobic Rick Warren was given center stage. What a disappointment. I complained to the White House and was told it was the networks decision not to air the gay Bishop. Never did believe that. I wrote articles to newspapers, which were printed and then I gave it a backseat, but I never forgot the politics of the decision.
Obama can do more for human rights as a second term President and that's why he's hedging now... it's political. He doesn't want to piss off the moderates. After he's elected, it will be a sprint to the finish with human rights legislation and a lot more. I'd rather see him elected than anyone I can think of. However, if I were Lt Choi and I was fired from the service because I was gay, I'd feel pretty much the way he does. It's a travesty that he isn't
proudly serving AND receiving back pay.

I can empathize with Lt. Choy's views and the reasons that he got them. He must remember though, he is the face of an important and controversial issue. It's a tough position to be in. He has chosen to fight instead of back down, always a good choice. As Liberals we have to choose our battles and words carefully. The Teacons are ready to pounce on any thing they perceive as a division among us.

    • What happened to an individuals right to their own opinion ? Does everyone HAVE to walk in lock-step with everyone else ? I agree it's time to honor the " All men are created equal" clause but let others have an opinion without getting jumped on. Nothing is black or white.

    • Stay at it Choi maybe you can get Obama defeated in 2012 by Bachman and then you can get on television and tell how you taught Obama a lesson and oh by the way she just signed a bill into law making it a crime to be gay.The penalties in the law coming up in africa is live in prison or death.Have a good day.

Dan Choi has every right to be angry, he got fired from a job that he was good at and loved , because in this day and age still have intolerance and hate. Second it's not like he personally was asked by someone if he was gay and responded yes. Just like so many through no fault of their own, someone else suspected, spied on them, went through personal emails it was found out these service members were gay. The suspicion alone in some causes forced some of them out. No one asked and they sure as hell didn't tell. They did nothing wrong as far as the policy and yet they were punished for the prying of others. So yea I would be angry too. Sure Obama ended DADT but it has still yet to be implemented and I haven't heard anything about whether the thousands of people fired from DADT will even be able to get their jobs back. The military isn't one for re hires.
I do understand though if the LGBT community pushes too hard that support for Obama will go down and Democrats could end up losing in 2012, but Equal rights is supposed to be a given in American, not something the states should be able to discriminate about. It's a Federal issue that Obama needs to do what the majority of the population want and that is make equal rights for the LGBT community.
As far as Bachman I think her party will be behind her as far as her becoming the Republican nominee, but America as a whole will not tolerate someone that quotes scripture and says god told her to do something. She is injecting her religious beliefs to make policy and she is going to learn that the majority of Americans want their voice heard and not the voices in her head.
Come now Africa? We are not Africa when it comes to equal rights. It's horrible what it is like in Africa as far as being gay. It's still a battle but the growing number of the people in America either support the LGBT community or know it won't affect them if they have equal rights

AFTER he had his AG file court documents equating gay marriage with pedophilia and incest, and AFTER he had Mega-Bigot, Rick Warren, give the inauguration invocation, which was a huge and very public slap in the face to every LGBT in America.

It got to the point where Obama didn't have a choice, really. At the rate he is slaughtering our soldiers and troops, he no longer had the luxury of having an official policy which discouraged LGBTs from joining the military.

In addition, Obama realized he could not continue to shit all over LGBTs and then expect them to vote for him in 2012.

    • I remember last year when Dan Choi and others that had been fired over DADT were on Rachel Maddow, and yes DADT was repealed with Obama and yet it still hasn't been implemented. I am unhappy with Obama since he can't grasp that his personal feelings on gay marriage are not the same as what is becoming the majority of the population that either support it or don't care about gay marriage but know it wouldn't affect them one way or another. He is evolving at a slower pace than his main supporters and he needs to do what the people that elected him want and not his constant wrestling with the issue in him. Dan Choi is so right in what he said

Is h2o_4u a variation of the AuH20 used as a bumper sticker a long time ago? If so, I voted against your hack at that time, and he is still superior to any candidates elected or otherwise your party has produced since then, including Regan!

    • I'm very happy that gay marriage has been approved in NY. However, I see Dan Choi's point. NY did this on a state level, while Obama is "evolving"....what a joke and a slap in the face this is to Choi and others like him who are still wating for their equal rights.

Perhaps if we just repealed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a flawed document, and replaced it with a civil rights at that guaranteed all Americans equal protection under the law, Obama might get serious about his DADT 2008 promise.

Let's make his kids bastards and see how quick he sees the benefit in equal rights for all Americans.

WRONG. Democrats/liberals like me researched and published critical articles continually during the Bush/Cheney administration.

Now we have to deal with the destruction of the Democratic Party thanks to Obama's bait-and-switch scam of a presidency, and the hypocrisy of Democrats who bitched night and day about Bush/Cheney, but remain quiveringly silent when Obama does the same thing.

TLbuffin is right. It is a political tightrope and timing is important. Also don't be surprised when the SCOTUS rules that equality is constitutional. The federal cases winding through the courts are going to come to a head: at SCOTUS. Our day is coming to be sure.
