Liberal Dems: No cuts to Entitlements

"Washington (CNN) - Even before the debt talks got underway at the White House Thursday, liberal House Democrats drew a line in the sand, saying there was no way they could support a deal that includes cuts to entitlement programs. They planned to send President Obama a letter telling him to take entitlements off the table in the talks.
"At a time when each millionaire is getting $138,700 dollar tax break a year from the government, there is no reason our seniors and the neediest amongst us need to struggle to pay their hospital bills," said Congressional Progressive Caucus Vice Chair Judy Chu, D-California. "The debt must be addressed, but it should be done in a way that is fair to all. We should not balance the back of this budget on our nation's seniors."

    • Why don't we just do what the American people want to do?

      The Majority of all Americans oppose cutting Medicare and Social Security.
      The Majority of all Americans support raising taxes on the rich.
      The Majority of all Americans oppose lowering corporate taxes.
      The Majority of all Americans support cutting the Department of Defense Budget (As did the now-recently-former Secretary of Defense).
      The Majority of all Americans support closing tax loopholes.

      If we do all of the things that that majority of all Americans want to do, we won't have a budget deficit anymore.

      To a large extent, the argument that the 35% corporate rate is too high, is a red herring. Many of these companies pay much less and some actually pay nothing or even get a refund. I, personally, am not against lower the corporate rate, so long as they PAY it! 25%, no loopholes. That's what they're asking for. But I will tell you now, that if they get that lower rate but, w/o the loopholes, they'll still bitch about it. So I say, just do it.

      Here's the question:
      If, as the Republicans claim, a return to 1990's tax rates would lead to the collapse of Western civilization;
      Why, then did our society not implode during the 1990's?
      If, as the Teabagging Partiers allege, 1950's tax rates would mean an implosion of our society;
      Then why didn't western civilization collapse in the 1950's?

    • If for once the Dem's show some spine I will be really impressed. One thing that will help alot is if the GOP wants wars, tax the rich to pay for it. They are making money off it anyway from contracts investments on Wall St.

    • NO! It's not "liberal" Dems objecting to more theft from the public, it's "fiscally conservative" progressive Dems who object to further weakening the country so the top one percent can grow stronger! Strengthening the country; which is the people, public services, and infrastructure of the country, is a fiscally conservative concept and under current conditions and practices, a progressive and remedial one.

      Can any legislators or the President grasp this reality? I would certainly like to hear you articulate it for the mass public!
