A Japanese scientist has uploaded a video of his latest invention - a singing robot mouth - and already it's going viral.
The not-at-all-creepy gadget, seen in the video above, has motor-controlled vocal cords, a vocal tract and nasal cavity — and is designed to help with voice training for people with hearing impairments.
Developed by Professor Hideyuki Sawada at Kagawa University in Japan, the robot mouth can both talk and sing. To demonstrate its skills, Prof. Hideyuki had the rubber mouth sing Kagome Kagome, a Japanese playground song.
Though it sounds a bit like a revving lawnmower, the robot is able to learn on the go and is constantly judging his own sound output, in the same way a human does, to ensure it sounds as it should. Whatever noises it makes into a microphone is sent to a neural network that acts as its brain. The 'brain' then analyses the sounds for accuracy and tweaks the robot mouth settings to improve the voice.
