London police arrested Rebekah Brooks, Rupert Murdoch's former British CEO, in the phone hacking and police bribery scandal Sunday, and the former News of the World editor said she was "assisting the police with their inquiries."

Brooks, 43, was arrested at a London police station at noon Sunday. She is being questioned on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications phone hacking and on suspicion of corruption, which relates to bribing police for information.

A statement released on Brooks' behalf said she "voluntarily attended a London police station to assist with their ongoing investigation."

"This was a prearranged appointment," said her spokesman, David Wilson although he said Brooks was not aware she was going to be arrested.

    • I just spoke to someone who read they hacked thousands of phones. Not only that but they also DELETED older messages to get to newer ones. I'm betting that NewsCrap will never recover from this. As soon as they discovered they did it here in the US the shit will really hit the fan and "FOX" News will become "FUCKED" NEWS.

I can see a couple of things realistically happening. One would be for ol' Rupe to break up his media monopoly and start selling off the parts in a last ditch effort squeeze whatever money he can out of his burning empire. Two: Lawsuits. Lots and lots and lots of lawsuits.

It will be interesting to see if the millions (probably) promised to Ms Brooks to keep her mouth shut will outweigh the fact that she could spend a decade or two in prison. Or will she cut a plea bargain and reveal all the sordid details.

    • Yeah, I don't know who ever thought that it was a good idea to give law enforcment the ability to hack someones phone without getting a warrent from a judge first (thanks un-Patriot Act). Everyyear the number of times police use this system seems to double. Do we really have 2 times as many terrorist acts occurring every year? What is the need then?

    • I will not be satisfied until Murdoch himself is sentenced, the offices of News Corp shut down, and Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Neil Cavuto, and Ann Coulter are drawn and quartered then wheeled out to the streets for a public flogging.

Or just an apology for deliberately lying to the American public.

    • This story is awesome and it will take up the rest of the summer with Murdoch's empire going down in flames. When it is made know that phones were tapped here in the U.S. of politically elected officials you haven't seen the shit hit the fan yet. This will be bigger than Watergate!

    • Don't fool yourselves. Just as this story starts to become a serious threat to FOX news in the USA, Israel will start bombing Iran just to throw our attention elsewhere. (Among other reasons). Word is the bombs are going to start dropping sometime in September. If you think it's going to be easy to take down the conservative, teabagger, republican mouth-peice you're wrong. They're more then willing to kill anybody and use any dirty trick to stay in power. They've done it before and will again. So far in the first decade of this century they have stolen an election, lied us into a war, ruined our economy and put forward the biggest bunch of Fascist for public office ever to grace the American political stage! These people will stop at nothing!

    • Typical .....arrest everyone but the freaking Boss! This most powerful magnet who would casually allow any of his underlings to subscribe their own creative ideas to running HIS news empire!
Do you think for a moment any one connected to this organization would ever jeopardize their career and his wrath by doing something as brainless as this without his freaking knowledge? Because of what it is ...is the very reason he would have to give his OK on it....of course with the, " I don't want to Know anything " statement after a detailed description.
If this was for stealing something from him it would be much different , but this was giving him plenty and they would want / expect to be awarded for such deeds.
This always plays out as if it were staged ...simply to sell more story or "copy".

    • This is the takedown of conservative control in the US. The key to their power has been their ability to control the mindless masses. That started with Clear Channel and morphed to Rupert's network. Once the shield of sycophant news imposters is eliminated, the Repubes will have to start answering their own questions, real questions. And I believe the "masses" will be disappointed with the answers. Every post on News Corp should have a photo of their largest stockholders. I doubt your basic American redneck is going to appreciate finding out they have been feeding at the trough of a Saudi prince.

    • This was published the day before "Rosebud" was fired

Just reverse the story line that Kane attacked corporate trusts and pretended to champion the underpriveleged, the main theme that journalism was a way to garner personal political power is still in tact. It is obvious to me that Murdoch read Citizen Kane and used it as a structural model for a journalistic empire which is now sure to fall apart as did that of Citizen Kane.

As to Susan (Kanes obsessive love interest) we find Rebekka Wade that is given News of the World (not an opera house like Susan) find myself in the same position as the Greenslde Blog in the UK "With his stubborn refusal to fire News International's beleaguered chief executive Rebekah Brooks in mind, I am reminded of that moment in the movie when Orson Welles (as Charles Foster Kane) dies while holding a snow globe and uttering a single word: "Rosebud".

So, when his time comes, I wonder whether a chastened Murdoch will replicate that scene by also muttering a single word: "Redhead"."

In the political power aspect may I add one excerpt here from a breakfast scene from Citizen Kane.

Wife Emily is bothered by Kane's criticism of the Presidential office in public, an office she considers a sacred cow institution:

Emily: Sometimes, I think I'd prefer a rival of flesh-and-blood.
Charles: Oh Emily, I don't spend that much time on the newspaper.
Emily: It isn't just the time. It's what you print - attacking the President.
      Charles: You mean Uncle John.
Emily: I mean the President of the United States.
Charles: He's still Uncle John, and he's still a well-meaning fathead who's letting a pack of high-pressure crooks run his administration. This whole oil scandal...
Emily: He happens to be the President, Charles, not you.
Charles: That's a mistake that will be corrected one of these days.

Don't ya figure Rupert came to England to negotiate her price for taking the fall and keeping James outta trouble? Bet she is set for life if she is a good little soldier and takes a mild spanking for the team.

Also, someone posting comments at TPM suggested she looks a lot like Rupert. Chin, nose, around the eyes. I hunted up a pic of him in his late 30s or 40-ish, and gotta tell ya, there are some similarities. Have read she is really tight with his kids and his current wife not fond of her. Makes one wonder.

My momma always said: There are no illegitimate children, but there are some real bastard parents.

Thinkin there are many who will attest to Rupert being a bastard.

The poster at TPM did make me wonder a bit. It would explain a lot, if true. Rupert held off firing Ms Brooks until such time as it appeared James was circling the drain.

Well she is either playing hide the salami with him or the redheaded illegitimate child . either way we will never know the truth. Well unless they break out the waterboard. But I would rather they saved that for bush.

I guess we are going to find out if British law is done differently than it is here in the states. Faux news, being the propaganda arm of the right-wing teapublicans in this country, would probably be deemed to big to jail by our courts! And the dems in Washington D.C. would be like, huh, ah, well, ok.

I don't pretend to know how things work in the UK but it appears that the people are demanding some kind of satisfaction. The fact that this has been going on for so long and suddenly became a freight train when exposed is telling. Their public loved the titillating insider scoops and gossip until it came to one of them. Now they want heads to roll. Somebody is going to pay.

    • Golly gee,-whiz...I just can't wait until the can of worms is opened up on this side of the big pond.....I'm so giddy about this...the timing couldn't be better.

Has anyone noticed that over on FOX News there are maybe 3 videos relating to this investigation, and maybe 2 written articles about this whole cluster fluck??

It's soooooo funny because no one over at FOX News can scream: "Wah! wah! The "Lame-Stream" media is picking on us!!!"

Man..I'm gonna have my cable re-installed the minute I find out there will be congressional hearings. I know I can see a good deal of C-Span on line...but I don't wanna miss a single episode in the Chronicles of Murdoch...or as the FOX Burns.
