The Terrifying Christian Right

The Christian Right’s assault on America is frightening, and, as someone who grew up in a world of religious fanaticism, my personal experience gives me a sharp sense of where this is heading. In his 2007 book, American Fascists, the Christian Right and the War on America, Chris Hedges describes what America would look like if evangelicals, or dominionists, complete their takeover of the American political system
“America becomes, in this militant Biblicism, an agent of god, and all political and intellectual opponents of America’s Christian leaders are viewed, quite simply, as agents of Satan. Under Christian dominion, America will be no longer a sinful and fallen nation but one in which the 10 Commandments form the basis of our legal system, creationism and ‘Christian values’ form the basis of our educational system, and the media and government proclaim the Good News to one and all. Labor unions, civil rights laws and public schools will be abolished. Women will be removed from the workforce to stay at home, and all those deemed insufficiently Christian will be denied citizenship. Aside from its proselytizing mandate, the federal government will be reduced to the protection of property rights and ‘homeland security…’ The only legitimate voices in this state will be Christian. All others will be silenced.”
The takeover is well underway. As of 2007 Christian fundamentalists held “a majority of seats in 36 percent of all Republican party state committees, or 18 of 50 states, along with large minorities in remaining states.” Furthermore, “Forty-five senators and 186 members of the House of Representatives earned approval ratings of 80 to 100 percent from the three most influential Christian advocacy groups: the Christian Coalition, Eagle Forum, and Family Resource Council.” And, of course, the Bush administration “diverted billions of dollars of taxpayer money from secular and governmental social service organizations to faith-based organizations, bankrolling Churches and organizations that seek to dismantle American democracy and create a theocratic state.”
The similarities between this movement and Islamic fundamentalism are striking. According to Hedges both “do not tolerate other forms of belief or disbelief. They are at war with artistic and cultural expression. They seek to silence the media. They call for the subjugation of women. They promote severe sexual repression, and they seek to express themselves through violence.”

It really is a shame people devote there entire lives to reverting progress in civilization like “do not tolerate other forms of belief or disbelief" or "Christian dominion" It took us so many sacrifices to be free from oppression, why go back?

These Christian, Bible-Thumping, Lunatics currently have some leverage because the older generations that are hold power and the older generations still believe in God.
As the power brokers become younger and younger the Cristian, Fascists lose their power. As our young people become better educated the nations belief in God is reduced.

The Pilgrims were the early settlers of the Plymouth Colony. Their leadership came from the religious congregations of English Dissenters who had fled the volatile political environment in England.
The religious zealots today are a species of the suppressive English from the past. They are imposing themselves on free thinkers. Where can we go to escape these narrow neck freaks?

OK now that sandy and me have buried the hatchet and I have a greater faith in my fellow men I will once again try to converse here about the language of the anti-religious fundamentalist wing of the progressive movement. I will begin by saying that I detest xenophobia bigotry and in general proselytizing and evangelicalism in general. I absolutely reject any text that claims to suggest that any person through their god has the right to force their faith on others . That being said some of the comments here are so general as to suggest that some in the atheist camp regard anyone who has any belief in a higher power or realm beyond this reality are Insane and should not be trusted with any position of of authority or respect in the community and some of you even advocate a scarlet letter of sorts. this rings of a fascist like mind set something I believe most if not all of you would give your lives to stop, So please, understand that many of your partisans have some form of belief in god, most do not even wish to share that personal relationship with any one else. To quote the diolog in the last matrix movie, as Morpheus responded to a statement made to him that - “Damn it Morpheus not everyone else believes what you believe!”.
His response, - "My belief does not require them to.".
We are aware of the highjacking by fanatics of the wise council our Ancestors the world over left us all in the form of known and unknown texts of faith and we wish to see the end of this abuse, but we must have the respect of our peers in regard to our personal lives that while we do not believe all the same “truth” we do agree on the fundamental “Truth” that no mortal being does, or has authority to dictate their “truth” to others.
Please think about what it is I am saying before responding Thank you all for your time. - 10 months ago

that is the crux of native american philosophy and that is also the reason our founding fathers where able to build this New type of nation because of their contact with the natives of this country. Little known fact the Iroquois have a belt proble in some museum that is a bead work belt that contains a bill of rights for the "People" that is nearly Identical to our constitution and bill of rights. google it if you like .... crazy how much influance Native American culture has with the Idea of Freedom as a whole amongst Europeans.

The Lord Christ is a myth, invented and embraced by small, closed-minded, fearful minds who have no sense of their own empowerment. Empirical truths/science are instrumental for everyone else.
And then, there's egg rolls:
Now having said that, I support religious freedom, the right to worship for anyone to whom religion is an aid in life, just as I support the right for anyone to worship egg rolls, if that's what turns them on. - 10 months ago

I am a Christian, but I believe in love of, and respect for, all humans, and other inhabitants on this Earth. I'm tired of the radical so-called Christian Right taking over the religious, educational, and political conversation. They are making the rest of us ashamed of admitting that we follow a man who urged us to love and not to judge, who taught in the temple precincts, not the santuary, because he wanted women as well as men to hear what he had to say, who called out authorities for their heartlessness against the poor, who asked the rich to give up their possessions. I know it sounds like I'm judging the Christian Right, but I cannot keep silent in the face of such hypocrisy by some of its members, especially those in power.

These people are scary, intolerance should concern everybody that cares about true freedom. Not the freedom these idiots claim dominion over.
Absolutely no difference in their way of thinking than crazy Islamists'. They just haven't stared blowing themselves up yet. Religion: The biggest con ever that is responsible for more hate, death and destruction, more division among people than the world has ever known. It has no place in politics because it has too many spins on it. And you can hate me if you want to but the Bible is a book written by men. The books selected out of many written, were chosen by men. Women wrote many books but none were chosen. There are lots of books written but none based on FACT! These books are stories written because people had nothing else for guidance of right and wrong, good and evil. If I had proof that these books were the actual words of God, I would be a believer too! Now if you believe you need the Bible for faith, comfort and your personal peace of mind, so be it, that is your right. But you should already know what's right and wrong, good and evil just from common sense. Do you really have to go to church to listen to someone explain this to you from 2000 year old stories that have extreme measures of discipline? Do you ever wonder why men of faith don't read the whole individual book of the Bible to you? Why they pick and choose what they read from each book? It's because of so much contradiction in the Bible people would get confused and ask questions. But ya gotta keep it going. It's good for business!

Great spin on things, Kraven. I wish more people would just question the Bible. We are taught from birth that you have to take this book as the "gospel truth" the word of "God", and I believe people are afraid Not to believe. I agree that the bible is a good self help, reference book, but the word of God, NO. You are absolutely correct on the missing books of the bible. I have questioned MANY clergy on that and they have no answers. Where is the Book of Barnabus, The book of Mary, the Book of Ruth, and don't ever question one of the most controversial missing books-The Book of Mary Magdalene, which scholars believe admits that Jesus was married and Fathered children. But, that would make the lord and savior not perfect, or maybe it would make him HUMAN>as for the fundamentalists, they know the power of the Bible, they know the division and the control the book possesses. They use it like weapons of mass destruction. They are tyrants, and I believe they will be judged.

This Demotivator is one of my favorites. I was raised Methodist by my grandmother. She was, and still is, old school. I pretty much stopped believing in the Christian God when I was very young.
I learned early that life was not fair and simply praying and hoping God listens was not doing anything for me. I started learning about other religions, in secret of course.
I refuse to go to a church and apologize for being human. If I do good things, it's not because I want some eternal reward. I do good things because I want to. If I do bad things well I'll deal with the consequences immediately or later on.
I always ask my (dickish) Christian friends whether they do good things because they want to or that God wants them to. Their answers are hilarious. I don't knock on people's faith or lack thereof. I only mock and poke fun when they start shoving their faiths down my throat. They throw the first punch, I punch back.
I have friends that believe in different Gods or none. We all have an understanding: Don't be a dick to others. Funny that they all think that Gay marriage should be legal. They believe in separation of Church and State. They're pretty awesome people.
No one is going to tell me that I'm a bad person because I don't subscribe to their religious team. And if they do, then they can go eat me.

This is one of my favorite Bible verses: Matthew 15:8 "These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me."
The Bible may be a contradiction but there are pretty nifty verses. I some times say that one when asshole Christians bother me with their holier-than-thou mess.

Th Q"ran has some poetic ones too , the IChing , you must include some of the perennial philosophy ideas or you will NEVER get any followers . The way i see ti , just cut to the chase . Perennial philosophy is all you need . It is something we all agree on . Non divisive . But then how would the elite manipulate the population ?

I could condense the Bible into about 150 pages of good phrases. About the size of the "lazy mans guide to enlightenment"

Quite a few of the "nifty" verses were re-used [plagiarized] from previously existing manuscripts. Also, a lot of the dramatic situations - virgin birth, baptism in a river, 12 followers [some of whom were recruited whilst fishing], coming back to life 3 days later.
