On Thursday, the 6-year-old cable network announced the departure of Mark Rosenthal, its chief executive for the last two years.
Current TV co-founder Joel Hyatt once again steps into the role of CEO. Hyatt launched the channel, now available in about 75 million homes, with the former vice president in 2005. At the time, their goal was not to create a political channel but rather to borrow a page from social media sites to appeal to the Generation X crowd with culturally relevant programming.
During his tenure, Rosenthal attempted to reduce overhead costs to shore up Current TV's finances and improve relations with cable and satellite distributors. He steered the channel away from short-form programming submitted by viewers, which failed to attract audiences.
Last month, the network added liberal commentor Keith Olbermann to its prime-time roster in a bid for greater recognition and clout. Now Current is focused on news and analysis, which it called "a solid foundation for growth."
"These results helped pave the way for Current's recently successful launch of 'Countdown With Keith Olbermann' and the network's major strategic shift to become a political commentary and news analysis network with a clear, progressive point of view," the network said in a statement.
Rosenthal -- a former head of MTV and former CEO of advertising firm Interpublic Media -- was not immediately available for comment.

If that was really their goal, then they have massively screwed up with handing over the news to KO.
KO is great and all, but he is definitely not Generation-X attractive.

"He steered the channel away from short-form programming submitted by viewers, which failed to attract audiences." I think we can bring back a little short-form programming. With all the airtime they waste with reruns we could have some of the community's stories back on the air.

Infomania, Rotten Tomatoes, VCC, Vicky the Robot, all the things that made Current unique and watchable are gone. Keith Olbermann and endless repeats of Vanguard and This American Life are not cutting it, kids.
Current as a television station needs to invest in programming. Current as a website needs to stop alienating its members.

I would be happy to take his place and make this channel what it was always meant to be...a force to be reckoned with, to empower creativity in the mind, to give a voice to transform reality, and to help viewers develop their critical thinking skills as well as entertain and inform.

Hopefully this will be a positive change for Current. The addition of Keith Olbermann was a great start because Keith is not your typical MSM drivel. He's a journalist. Any up and coming network needs a recognizable face with a proven track record to improve it's viewership. Citizen journalism is great and if Keith provides a platform for Cenk Uygur, that would only serve to better Current even more.

You have great insight and I agree with what you are saying. I know a lot of people are upset about Currents program changes but I believe these guys are working very hard trying to bring Current up to snuff with any other cable station. Lets give them a chance guys.

If they are going to keep KO, they need to change their goals, then.
KO is great and all, but he definitely is not someone who would attract the Generation-X peeps.

I'd like to see mother jones/ Democracy now political analysis along with user-submitted material. But frankly, since this is Al Gore's station, I want to see political analysis from environmentalist perspective. "A clear, progressive point of view is hardly descriptive. It would be a shame if Current turn out to be another MSNBC station, thus keeping company with networks that bought into the Bush lies during the 2000 election

I agree, but I don't think there is a market for another MSNBC station.
CNN/ABC/CBS fill that market already.

We don't need another MSNBC, so I hope if current is going to become a news network it's more like the young turks. I'm talking about true liberal/progressive news -- not the corporate/washington toned-down version of it like MSNBC. Current absolutely must get Cenk Uygur. I want to see real news and not shit like the Casey Anthony trial or days and days dedicated to the death of Michael Jackson. If profit is the prevailing motive, we will not get real news. Profit fucks everything up and puts everything in control of the elite, ultimately.

I hope the models can co-exist.
This could be a great opportunity. AFAIK, citizen journalism has failed on other networks including CNN.
I guess it's all up to Keith.

I don't hate the idea of Current becoming a progressive news network.
But does this mean VC2 is dead? Can't we have VC2 news oriented pods?

We already have them, they just aren't good enough for the the goals laid out I suppose. You have to be a big name media journalist making millions to count in the media business. I actually thought Current would blaze a trail of making their own journalists from those who did user created content because it was exactly what they outlined in their mission. No spin, not corporate owned and sincere because the person doing it wasn't getting millions and corporate sponsorship to be motivated. With him leaving maybe it will wind up being a positive development. I guess we will have to wait and see.
