OMG Yes, why? This was just some piece of mildly interesting innocuous something that I caught my attention. I never thought of it as news. People are a bit strange.

I'm commenting to voice the opinion that I don't think this is newsworthy, not because I think comics are unimportant, but because this particular revelation from the comic book world doesn't seem to be such a big deal.
But clearly I've made a mistake in voicing my opinion. How dare I? Tsk. *hangs head in shame*

I'm *not really* down with this
I like my white heroes white and my black heroes black
even if it's not much to go around
at least it's a alternate universeI guess with this they are trying to get into and tell stories of the drama that brings his ethnicity
like how it was for Peter Parker trying to support his grandma, hardly paying the rent, growing up as a nerd. etc and so forth... bringing things to the table that people can relate to so marvel can attract a multitude of audiences - 10 months ago

Changing traditional white heros with non-white is a trend in comics, well at least is is a trend in Marvel Comics. One can speculate as to why this is, but I'm not gonna go there!
In an alternate universe, one of Marvel's most iconic characters, Sgt. Fury, was changed from a white man to a black man after the Iron Man theatrical release featured Samuel L. Jackson as Fury.
In the movie Daredevil, the Kingpin was a black gangster instead of a gigantic fat white man.
Of course more recently, the Thor theatrical release featured a black Heimdall as a Norse god which really pissed of a bunch of white nationalists/seperatists lol.
I just hope they don't change the Black Panther character to a South African white supremacist or something haha!
Another big trend that I'm seeing in Marvel Comics is the interracial relationship. It's prominently featured in some of the most popular storylines.

I think Nick Fury was cast as an African American in The Ultimates ( Ultimate Universe Avengers ),BEFORE the Iron Man cinematic release, and that was the inspiration.
It first came out in 2002 I think.
Appreciate the geekism ! +^d !

MORE on that -
[ Design changes
The original design for Ultimate Nick Fury. ]When Nick Fury first made his appearance in the Ultimate Universe, he had a vastly different design, featuring a full head of close-cropped hair, a clean-shaven, younger appearance (particularly as depicted in Ultimate Marvel Team-Up) and less visible scarring around his eye-patch, not to mention lacking a specific resemblance to any actor. He was also characterized much more in the James Bond mold of super-spy[8], wearing seemingly normal clothing which integrated outlandishly high-tech capabilities such as phasing, invisibility, and "para-shoes" that allow him to descend hundreds of feet without the aid of a parachute (shown to be capable of flight in later issues). The more familiar Samuel L. Jackson-inspired design did not appear until Nick Fury resurfaced in the 2002 series The Ultimates.
[edit] Samuel L. JacksonActor Samuel L. Jackson did not originally give his consent for Marvel Comics to use his likeness in their redesign of the Fury character for The Ultimates[9], and first appeared with this revised look in The Ultimates #1, as drawn by Bryan Hitch. The similarity is even noted within the comic itself, in a scene in which the Ultimates discuss who they think should play each of them in a hypothetical movie about the team. Fury's answer for himself is "Mr. Samuel L. Jackson, of course, no discussion." It was only after seeing the redesigned Nick Fury in the first issue of The Ultimates that Samuel L. Jackson learned of the use of his likeness and contacted Marvel in order to secure the role of Nick Fury in any future Marvel movies.

What a load of crap! What's wrong with the world? "oh we have to be politically correct" & "oh no, we have to feature at least one jap & one black guy in a movie otherwise we'll get sued"
Publicity stunt. Load of crap.

I like the "Ultimate" version of the MARVEL universe a lot. Its trims a heap of unnecessary plot-history baggage away. It IS good to see a new guy in the mix.
p.s. I think they are getting CLOSER to simply recreating the tribal mix popularly known as modern "Californian" . ( you need a lil' asian and anglo to,.....for the COMPLETE genetic "rainbow coalition" . . .)

I heard there was a comment flame war in the USA Today article over this, so I went to check it out. Damn! What's wrong with people? It's a comic, for gosh sake. Also, what's up with the article's tag line: "We have an African-American president, so why not an African-American Spider-Man, too?" What the hell does Barak Obama have to do with Spiderman? This is some weird stuff and proof positive that American has lost its ever-lovin' mind.

"Peter Parker" is a pretty Anglo -white bread suburban kid name,......but the CHARACTER can easily be recast in multiple ethnicity / cultural framework variations.
A very simple and flexible character.

I think will smith is the first action hero who was black. Not a black action hero.
I think everybody can appreciate will smith as a hero and not care that he is black.
They shouldn't force a minority into this role.
Just get the most talented guy.

gah. But what the hell - MARVEL has many "alternate universes",....its all a matter of the quality of the writing.
p.s. the Marvel "1602"stuff by Neil Gaiman is to die for. Find it. Own it. Plagiarizer it with NO APOLOGY for your RPG needs - - -
