Here is just another example of how the rethuglicans control the dialog. SS has often run surpluses. These surpluses have been raided over the years to pay for tax cuts. This is the only reason SS cuts are on the table. SS has no impact on the budget. It is not a part of the budget and any changes to it would have no impact on the budget. It is managed as a separate entity, funded by payroll taxes. Nothing comes from the general revenue fund. So why link it to the budget? Because when it was raided to pay for tax cuts, the money was borrowed. Congress OWES money to SS. The discussion about cutting SS has more to do with canceling the debt owed, than any fiscal responsibilities. This is our money that they have taken and given to the rich. If we can't afford to pay it back, then fine, pay it back later. But if you cancel the debt, then we've just transferred (redistributed) wealth from the whole to the few. Redistribution of wealth is OK with the rethuglicans when it goes from the bottom to the top, but if goes from the top to the bottom, its communism. What a crock! I've sent a link to this article and my comments to Senator Lieberman who is calling for cuts to SS. Maybe you should all send him some choice comments as well. Be polite though.
