Heat wave kills young athletes

JanforGore
Please, your child's life is more important than any practice or sports event.
This excessive heatwave is dangerous.

    • Every year kids die in summer session practices. Often it's due to undiscovered congenital heart problems. It pays to have kids stress tested before sending them out into the heat to practice.

When I played high school sports there weren't any regulations regarding the heat. We practiced from 9am-noon and 2-5pm. My kids practiced under regulations determining how hot it could be during practice. Many high schools have moved double sessions to 7-10am and 3-6pm. It's cooler in the morning. The kids get hours to rest and replenish between sessions.

When I was a soph (three year high school) not only did I have to deal with the heat, sophs were picked on by upperclassmen along with having to carry equipment and a senior's pads.

Schools don't have budgets for two sets of helmets. Besides, it doesn't matter what color the helmet is, it's damn hot in a helmet. Some of the kids wear Under Armor heat management du rags under their helmets. It helps a little. That and short hair.

    • I guess these athelete need to understand that the republicans expect them to take responsibility for dying at practice and games. I hope thier parents pay the hospital and ambulance bills. This is the ownership society now. If the kids die then they were weak and should have not been there in the first place, natural selection.

I do not beleive any of that but wanted to speak for the republicans. That way when I hear it, I will know how to respond.

Sports are not designed to be a death feat in the heat. They should be suspended and the season moved to accomodate the weather conditions.

I rhyme all the time without thinking, it comes natural.

Hmm, I don't know....I think we need at least another century to bitch at each other about it. You know, let it really take hold to the point where there is absolutely nothing we can do for this generation so they really hate us. We're doing a bang up job so far.

Well Jan, I hear that those Republican farmers down in Texas are selling their cattle half grown before the, die from heat, dehydration, and lack of pasture, and the crops have withered in the field. Maybe when they finish scratching the scalp off of their heads they'll turn to the "Bush" brigade and say: "You know, there might be something to this carbon emissions thing and these heat waves. Whatcha think partner?"

On the up side, perhaps we've come to the point where Big Ag/Monsanto's interests are diametrically opposed to Big Oil's and Big Industry's interests. Let us pray together.

The kid doesn't get a choice to practice. If he doesn't he'll be benched or kicked off the team. If the kid wants to play he deals with it. Unless the coaches are stupid, they know how to handle the kids in the heat.

Any death is one too many. But relative to the number of kids practicing across the country in the summer heat there isn't a crisis.
