‪The Sacred Demise of Industrial Civilization

Vierotchka
Peak Moment 169: As a historian, Carolyn Baker has a keen eye for current events that are indicators of the collapse were seeing all around us. But she's also a psychologist concerned about how we personally navigate the turbulence and find meaning within it. The author of Sacred Demise: Walking the Spiritual Path of Industrial Civilizations Collapse, she describes the old story that isn't working anymore (humans are separate from nature), and the new story we must live by for real sustainability. Her Speaking Truth to Power website is a rich collection of articles reflecting both collapse and preparedness action. [www.carolynbaker.net]

    • I noticed the old story did not work as a child ... and embraced the perennial philosophies ... Thank goodness , They always work .

    • What's so sacred about industrialism ? It's polluting, unaesthetic, and
often shows little or no respect for the earth. Article voted up however.
The Indian tribes had closer ties to the sacredness of the earth because
they weren't industrialized. They believe God dwells in the mountain
pastures, as do I. I prefer the Colorado Rockies or the Swiss Alps to any
industrialization. Those places are sacred. One view of the Edelweiss
in a mountain meadow will convince you of that.

The rise of industrial civilization is the reason that the Earth has so many people on it (See author Malthus).

If we must live sustainably (i.e. not pulling anything out of the earth), then we need to get rid of several billion people.

Solid article you posted here V. Last I heard the Edelweiss was the national
flower of Switzerland. I mentioned that because when I return to Switzerland
to live as a resident foreign alien, I hope to see some Edelweiss in person.
Question for you: How do the Swiss compare with other countries in their
willingness to harmonize their industry with nature ?

5 billion to be in the apprx. ball park. Without meaning to sound unsociable,
I prefer to call them souls instead of merely people. It's horribly tragic that
human life has become so cheap on this Earth, our host, that we've chosen
to rid ourselves of others. That's how humans deal with pests, and vermin.
They consider them a nuissance, and resort to extermination. Yes, we have
to either accomodate 5 Billion people or sterilize them as if they were dogs
and cats to be spayed/neutered. Until the rise of Big Oil, petrochemical
fertilizers, diesel tractors, and Corporate farms where 1 man could feed
1000 people, the world population has never exceeded 1-2 Billion people.
The destruction of the South American rainforests to plant soybeans for
export dollars to pay interest on national debts is the tragedy which has
resulted from making scientificly researched industrialization our God.

    • Payback is a bitch and this will increase people's sense of the sacredness of life and the extreme importance of united and interdependent communities at the grass roots level.

    • Apocalypse does not come from Latin, it comes from Ancient Greek ἀποκάλυψις (apokalupsis, “revelation”), from ἀπό (“away”) and καλύπτω (“I cover”).
