Cargill Meat Recall Threatens Public Health - Democracy NOW!

treewolf39
Democracy NOW! DN! - In one of the largest meat recalls in U.S. history, this week the food giant Cargill ordered the recall of 36 million pounds of ground turkey. The recall came after at least one person died from Salmonella, and another 76 people fell ill from turkey products traced to Cargill's processing plant in Springdale, Arkansas. According to the federal Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Salmonella outbreak involves a strain of the bacteria known as Salmonella Heidelberg, which is resistant to many commonly prescribed antibiotics. Although the recall was announced this week, the outbreak began in March. More than 3,000 people die a year from food poisoning in the United States and millions more get sick. Food safety advocates say this latest outbreak shows how budget cuts have hampered the ability of federal and state health agencies to effectively protect public health. Exactly treewolf. I have been a vegetarian for 20 years, not that this is more safer but it cuts out some food that my body does not need. I come from an country ( Austria) where one can still eat meat without worrying too much, the government has a strict code on raising farm animals, basically what you call here organic.

The sad thing I learned yesterday is that cross contamination from GMO crops will completely decimate organic as we know it if it is allowed to continue being planted. They are already feeding it to the livestock in Europe and the US. I am mostly a vegetarian as well. I am always amazed at how low the bar is set for food quality in America.

This is not good news. The standard of nutrition is on an extremely low level causing lots of health problems in the long run. Seems to me that this government is not very caring about the peoples health, that is just my opinion.
