It's International Beer Day, as if anyone needed an excuse to grab a cold one. Bottom's up!
The event was created in 2007 by Jesse Avshalomov, Evan Hamilton, Aaron Araki, Richard Hernandez, Tyler Burton and Ryland Hale to, well, celebrate beer.
Avshalomov, a search engine optimization strategist in San Francisco, writes on the event's website: "A few years back a group of friends and I decided that there needed to be a day in celebration of all things beer, a day in thanks to the people who produce and provide our favorite beverage. So we invented International Beer Day, convinced our local bar to celebrate on August 5th, made a little website for it, gave thanks to the beer industry, and had a good-ol' time."
The first International Beer Day was celebrated in 2008.
Word has spread. This year, more than 278 celebrations are planned in 138 cities and 23 countries. International Beer Day now has more than 23,000 fans on Facebook.
In Portland, Ore., a city known for its microbrews, The Cheerful Tortoise is marking the occasion by offering 15 of its 18 beers on tap for just $3, said manager Lindsay Taylor.
The sports bar, located on the Portland State University campus, has been pulling pints for 50 years. This is the second year the bar has participated in International Beer Day.
When asked if the event is just an excuse to drink beer, Taylor responded, "there's no excuse you need to drink beer."
