The rich are different — and not in a good way, studies suggest

Psychologist and social scientist Dacher Keltner says the rich really are different, and not in a good way: Their life experience makes them less empathetic, less altruistic, and generally more selfish.
In fact, he says, the philosophical battle over economics, taxes, debt ceilings and defaults that are now roiling the stock market is partly rooted in an upper class "ideology of self-interest."
“We have now done 12 separate studies measuring empathy in every way imaginable, social behavior in every way, and some work on compassion and it’s the same story,” he said. “Lower class people just show more empathy, more prosocial behavior, more compassion, no matter how you look at it.”
In an academic version of a Depression-era Frank Capra movie, Keltner and co-authors of an article called “Social Class as Culture: The Convergence of Resources and Rank in the Social Realm,” published this week in the journal Current Directions in Psychological Science, argue that “upper-class rank perceptions trigger a focus away from the context toward the self….”
In other words, rich people are more likely to think about themselves. “They think that economic success and political outcomes, and personal outcomes, have to do with individual behavior, a good work ethic,” said Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley.
Because the rich gloss over the ways family connections, money and education helped, they come to denigrate the role of government and vigorously oppose taxes to fund it.
“I will quote from the Tea Party hero Ayn Rand: “‘It is the morality of altruism that men have to reject,’” he said.

I guess these things just sorta get handed out through some government program. This must explain the great track record of these program participants winding up in a penthouse on the upper east side.

The same "Upper Class" - "Rich" folks who lack empathy and have money always want the "Poor" people that they pay to charge them less because they are "Friends" or more often, "Friends of a friend".
And they want you to be grateful for the fact that they are "Comfortable" with you in their homes and lives.
And when the drones start bombing "Their" backyards they will be the ones who cry loudest for peace... though their "Fortunes" were stolen in Wars. - 10 months ago

No, I am not saying that at all - and only a few Europeans stole their fortunes through the genocide and environmental destruction of the Americas - followed by the colonists who rebelled and fought the Brits so that they could themselves steal fortunes and continue the genocide and environmental destruction of the Americas on a huge (and ongoing) scale and keep these ill-gained profits for themselves.

Oh, and as I recall the history of the USA, the British basically tried to protect the Native Americans and set a limit, a border, to prevent the expansion of land-grabbing and genocide of natives further west of the first colonies. One of the reasons for the War of Independence was to eliminate this limitation so as to grab all of the land and eliminate the Native Americans.
Class is the natural order that is found among all primates (except for Orangutans), and since we are primates, simians, apes, we are wired for living in a hierachical social structure. That's just nature, not ignorance.

We are all naked apes, 'tis true... but the article YOU posted here was pointing out that "Rich" apes are typically bigger assholes. It got me fired up... and seeing as you are (apparently) a rich, upper class limey who spread this knowledge on an american governmental website~ you were looking to troll, i just bit the hook.
The high class wedding you all just had was stained by the low class riots, i suppose you are thinking? While people drive around in cars that are worth enough $$ to transform most small villages on this planet while the "lower classes" kill and die for them (from Iraq to the London street that young man was killed on.)
When it comes to money i have never been rich, when it comes to class i cherish only the priceless. I may be the lowest no-class asshole at the end of the universe... but this quote ~
“We have now done 12 separate studies measuring empathy in every way imaginable, social behavior in every way, and some work on compassion and it’s the same story,” he said. “Lower class people just show more empathy, more prosocial behavior, more compassion, no matter how you look at it.”...helps me justify hatred of the apathetic armageddon this "natural" First World hierarchical social structure you defend is creating.
Class is an organizational system created by elitists to help them justify their false sense of omnipotence.
here is a link to all the posts i have made with the search query, "Europe"... if you are up for getting even more bothered by even broader strokes on a wetter brush.
http://trancesenddance.blogspot.com/search?q=Europe
I do not blame Europe (or even the Bush Cartel) for all of the problems in this world. I condemn both for resisting solutions in the name of preserving destructive traditions.

First of all, I am not rich at all - by choice - even though I do stem from the upper class. I am British only because my parents naturalized British. As far as I can tell, and I've been posting here for over five years, Current is not an American governmental website.
No wedding was stained by the riots - these riots are largely the result of the British right-wing Tory government's "austerity" program that cut into government spending for the poor and for students.
How can empathy justify hatred of any kind - strikes me as a royal oxymoron!
You spew hatred - he who lives by hatred shall die by hatred.
Class is a natural hierarchical societal organization due to the fact that we are social apes. Betas, Deltas, and especially Omegas will always have some individuals among them who hate the Alphas - they are the losers.
I couldn't care less about your search query on Europe, and I will not grace your blog with my visit.

“Lower class people just show more empathy, more prosocial behavior, more compassion, no matter how you look at it.”
Have you considered that, maybe, just maybe, $250,000 is a gracious plenty to live on for a family of four?
Definition of rich - having wealth or great possessions; abundantly supplied with resources, means, or funds; wealthy.
When it comes to day-to-day life, $250K after taxes is $150K at the absolute worst.
That's $12,500/month
You can buy a million dollar home with a mortgage of $3,500 a month.
Bills for every utility and entertainment option you could possibly want? $1,000/month
Want to buy cars for everyone in the family: another $1,500/month
Want to eat out EVERY night? $2,000/month
These are all great possessions... and you can still put nearly half of it away to retire on.
That means you are abundantly supplied with resources, means and funds. If you don't have wealth yet, you will soon, because you simply can't spend that much.
Definition of Abundant - MORE THAN ADEQUATE.
250K is THE DEFINITION of rich. $200K is rich. $80K is fucking rich... I could never spend that much.
You need to accept that your perception of "rich" is factually inaccurate.

I suspect it's a chicken or the egg situation.
A certain kind of anti-social personality desires wealth to begin with, and is willing to do the things that many of us consider anti-social in order to acquire it. So, these are the people who become wealthy ... and then pass it on to their families.
Some nice people fall into wealth through luck or genuine genius, but most rich folks are people obsessed with money and material possessions.

That is it, in a nutshell. Many of their thought leaders (like Ayn Rand, Gov. Walker, Eric Cantor) are true sociopaths. Then there are others who are not sociopaths but who are so adept at rationalizing, compartmentalizing, ignoring and/or denying the truth that they truly exist in a state of altered consciousness (with or without the aid of alcohol, prescription drugs, and narcotics) where they cannot feel the emotions of empathy and compassion. Remember what the settlers of this country were told: that it was our God-given right and duty to displace the Native American peoples and to take and exploit the whole of America... some wealthy people today feel that exploiting the lower and middle classes is their right and destiny. Whatever you call it it's a mental and spiritual illness.

The way I see it, wealth is about two things; money & relationships.... Class is all about attitude. You could be the richest guy or gal in the world (financially), and still have no class, simply because you had the wrong attitude towards others.
If you saw someone, even a stranger, suffering from heatstroke, after they'd walked a long ways in 100 degree heat, for instance, & you offered them a ride or, offered them a drink of water, or tried to get them help, you are truly a high class individual.
If you sneered at that person, looked the other way, belittled them, or otherwise tried to judge them, then you have no class and, are the real loser.
If you merely avoided them, out of fear for your own safety, well, then you're just of average class & there's nothing terribly wrong with that, no one would really blame you in the case of someone you didn't know.... But, I would hope you would at least call emergency services for them next time, just to have someone check on them to make sure they'll be okay, and/ or that the next of kin will be found if they die before anything can be done.
If you are respectful towards your friends, who are struggling, when you choose to help them out then, you are truly high class.
If, however, you expect them to put up with just any & all types of garbage from you, just because you helped them out then, you have no class.
If you saw the homeless woman, sitting huddled & alone on the sidewalk by the bus stop, after her husband had just been arrested & taken away for vagrancy, and you went into the nearby convenience store to get change & got her a bottle of juice & a bag of trailmix, & then gave it to her with bus money so she could get to the homeless shelter, or church shelter, on the other side of town then, you truly have a lot of class.
If you picked on pedestrians, just for having to walk instead of riding, or driving, or for not happening to have nice-fitting clothes that fit the season then, you have no class.
If you met the struggling, young homeless couple,on the bus, with their baby in tow, who got kicked out of the homeless shelter just because the mother was "panhandling" in the streets for diaper money, and you gave them some money towards a hotel room, or offered them a place to stay, even if just for a short while, or to get them out of a storm then, you truly have a lot of class.
These are very real people. I've met them in my hometown. In some cases, I've been them. Just treat them like decent human beings, & do what you can for them, when you can. And when you can't, just admit it. It's not that hard. I've had to do it a number of times. If someone is asking for money, (whatever their apparent purpose & as long as they're not being rude, or violent about it) if you don't have it to spare just say so. "I'm sorry but, I just don't have anything to spare right now." Is perfectly sufficient. If they seem like they might get violent at that statement, well, just get away from them & call the cops if necessary...obviously that individual was either just too desperate, or too crazy.
The point is, most of them are just struggling right now and, they just need a little human sympathy, and to be treated with more respect than they often times get. Their situations are all a little different from each other. They're all down on their luck for different reasons, in different ways, and even to different degrees. Just treat them with compassion and respect. That's all that most of them really want, or expect. I send a big Thank You to Spirit, for all the kind, classy folks in my community who have helped me out or tried to, in the most selfless ways possible, when I really needed it.
And to all the no class losers who chose to be hateful instead, I send a big, fat, rotten raspberry...., Thhhpppppt!! ;-P

Not a shock. Just last week, Foreign Policy wrote that "it's the unemployed's fault they have no jobs, because GDP is now higher than it has been in the entirety of U.S. history, so the 10+% unemployed we have now must just have been working useless jobs before." http://tinyurl.com/43rl3ns
This also rings a bell into the basic Psychology of self-esteem. Those who feel their success (or lack of) is due to self-controlled events generally do better than those who attribute their condition to outside factors they can't control. So the rich's delusions may be making them happier, as if they needed anything else to go their way.

So all that money and power DON'T make them different? If you truly believe that "power inflates your view of yourself and diminishes your view of others," then you are agreeing with the article here that says the rich are "less empathetic, less altruistic, and generally more selfish." When you think you are better than other people, it's easy to justify taking advantage of them.
Following this logic, the only way to improve society's conscience would be to eliminate the rich altogether. Put some kind of financial cap on members of society AND all government officials. If no one can live so far above everyone else, they will relate to the public better. Then we can have something approaching social camaraderie, instead of lecherous class warfare.

The tea Party considers Ayn Rand a hero to them? Have they read the Fountainhead. The whole point was that society is trying to create sameness by putting down individuals who show any talent and raising up those who are blatantly stupid and unoriginal. The whole point is to show the dumbing down of society by those in power and to tell people to resist the temptation to sell out your talent for popularity. I suppose they read this book the way they read the Bible, pick and choose any line out of context and twist it to meet your need. Using this quote to summarize Ayn Rand is like quoting Lex Luther to define Superman. By the way, Ayn Rand turned into quite the dictator in life and ended up alone and sad, after running away all supporters by demanding that they live in complete subjugation to someone else's vision and rules.

Yes I know those of us who chose to contribute to society at a lower pay grade than you are all losers. Those damned teachers, nurses, firefighters, etc. are just such a damned drag on your society. When they become ill or injured they and can no longer make those contributions to society should just shut the hell up and die already. Yes, Warren we all get where you are coming from.

" I graduated with loans and enough money to pay bills until my first paycheck."
My first paycheck didn't come until a year after graduation, and even then it was near the poverty line. Oh yeah, I was such a lazy ass by just putting in 50 hours a week.
You are grossly misinformed about the harsh realities of this world.

I thought only the upper class used the term lower class? Lower income, middle class, doesn't bother me, but lower class sort of does. But using upper class doesn't, hmmm, this needs more thought on my part.

Some i have met sure are that way, and those that aspire to be insanely wealthy ( can you believe they think it possible ) ? It is as if they believe that , by the magic spell of acting like a selfish rich person , they will become one . As if it were an act of faith . Good luck with that .

I BET , they have also a LOWER tolerance to pain and other adversity . Take all their money away , and some will just commit suicide , others will go insane . They do not have the coping skills we do , yet they bleed as we do . I suggest a new "reality TV show" . A test of courage . Just needs a good title . Suddenly Penniless ? Who's got your back ?

Weren't there some reports, not long ago, that there was a genetic component to altruism? Some people just don't have the gene. So they are more likely to be Hoarders of $$. If it's a genetic thing, it would run in families.
And that's why we need hefty estate tax on very large estate. Sorry, Paris Hilton types just need to pull themselves up by their own fancy bootstraps. Elderly people who worked and paid into SS, and lived as decent. caring neighbors need to be able to rest a bit and not go hungry or freeze to death in winter. Tell the Hoarder Class to deal with it. Maybe science will find a way to help the greedy with their genetic deficiencies.

That's kind of a nice thought. Since they can afford genetic testing kits, they can use them ( in case they have trouble telling, for themselves, if they're overly greedy & selfish, or not ), since we know they're not all like that.

Funny & sooo true! Like except for that last part. I'd be afraid of getting blood poisoning from them & turning into one of the creepy, stingy ones! Yuck! No thanks! Lol! Though really, they're not all like that.... just too many of them are for this country's own good.
It's true though, I've had this problem before, & heard from phone reps., at local utilities, who say they've had a lot of stubborn, spoiled brat-type rich folks call in whining, complaining, & making all kinds of threats over having to pay a simple, measly, little late fee on their bill, even though the late fee was perfectly legit! The rest of us just pay our late fees without a fuss when we know we were late. The maddening thing is, sometimes the supervisors give in to their whining & griping, and let them off without paying their late fee! I hear that happens a lot, actually. That's probably half the reason our water bills & other utilities are getting so ridiculously high, and nigh unaffordable! Maybe we need to find a way to give those supervisors more backbone... just something else to brainstorm on. :-)

I've seen this too. They don't pay their bills and when the collector has to call them to collect debts they pretend to be personally insulted that they were even called. They are all "far too busy" to talk to someone about bill-paying.

I didn't need a study to prove to me that most rich people have no empathy. Just read a few people on this website that brag about how rich they are and only use GOP talking points when making an argument that proves they have no empathy for their fellow man. They put others down and think anyone that is unemployed right now as lazy.
This is nothing new either. Just look at the aristocrats back in the 17th and 18th Centuries. They treated there peons so poorly that eventually the peons turned on them. There was the fall of the Czars in Russia and the fall of King Louie in France to name a couple of examples.
The Spring Uprising in the Middle East proves that you can only keep suppressing people for so long before they fight back. I just hope that in the US people use peaceful demonstrations like Martin Luther King did. Keep marching arm and arm even if they throw tomatoes at you. With perseverance you will eventually win.

You obviously know little to nothing about the Russian Revolution. Most of the aristocrats who left Russia were saved and helped by their servants, protected from the Bolsheviks by their servants. Those who were massacred were massacred by the Bolsheviks who had been armed and financed by Kaiser Wilhelm II so as to weaken the Russian war effort on the German front. To this end, he sent envoys to Switzerland to contact Lenin whom he supplied with tons of gold and weapons, and had him smuggled into Russia along with said gold and weapons in a few sealed train wagons. Since most of the valid Russian men and weapons were engaged on the German front, this made this phony "revolution" a piece of cake, fighting and slaughtering unarmed old men, women and children.

Many Buddhists would say, "keep marching peacefully, even if they shoot at you." I'm not sure I would hold with letting it go that far...., maybe, maybe not. I don't usually approve of letting people just walk all over you. But, yeah, you're right.... a bunch of peaceful demonstrations would be best.

100% income tax on individuals above $150,000
100% income tax on Families making above $200,000.They still get to show the world how much they made, but the rest of it goes back to the world -- recycling as it were.
There is no human in the world who deserves more than $150 grand a year.
Besides, think what would happen to the price of Everything if no one made more than $150 grand.

He's a Dutchman. A great many of them measure up to over 6 feet tall.
Though it's what's inside of you that realy counts, as the Japanese have
shown us for centuries. I'd liked his 1990s movie as a blind swordsman
with a heightened sense of hearing. Too bad he has to star in a movie
that shows too much gratuitious violence. The man has a lot more class,
and deserves better than that-at any age. - 10 months ago
