Not a huge fan of this list. One of the authors of the books mentioned is David Icke. Icke believes that the moon isn't real. He thinks it's a giant UFO that projects a fake reality (along the lines of The Matrix movies) upon mankind. His insanity ... I mean theory is called the "moon matrix".
I am also turned off of this list because Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine" and Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States" were not on it.

I would add The Sorrows of Empire, Blowback, and Nemesis all by Chalmers Johnson. Also Guns, Germs, and Steel and Collapse both by Jared Diamond

I've been working on the Alan Watt recommended book list. If you don't know who Alan Watt is then you definitely need to cut through the matrix.

I read The Creature Fron Jeckyl Island and found very facinating the history on how the federal reserve came to be, however I dissagree with many of its conclusions such as the federal reserve is a conspiracy to turn the US into a communist country. Confessions of an Economic Hitman, also a great book, much of his book is available in a video documentary interviewing Mr Perkins. I'm still not conviced 9/11 was a government conspiracy. There are many great books out there on self sufficiency and permaculture. I do own The Self Suficient Life and How to Live It by Mr Seymore and is more of a survey of skills and general knowhow rather than comprehensive knowledge.

What Really Happened.com has posted an excerpt today from Edward Bernay's "Propaganda," one of the books from your list.
"If we understand the mechanisms and motives of the group mind, it is now possible to control and regiment the masses according to our will without their knowing it... In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons ... who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind."
"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country."
"We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized."

I realize the focus is on newer books here but here are a few “golden oldies” from the past that might fall into the same “forbidden” category. Many of these titles used to be on the shelf at Barnes and Noble, decades ago, before they became the giant monopoly of today. (They were only available at one branch in Manhattan though, just north of Greenwich Village.) But, today, anything is available online at various used and new book sellers. I use Alibris when it is something that is hard to find. As far as people not reading as much anymore, I am not sure if that is true. I know someone who works at the New York Public Library, and circulation has never been higher. In these hard times there is even more demand for free library books. (It is sometimes hard to find the more “radical” books in their collection, for circulation purposes. They are usually only available in the main branch, to be read on the premises. By the time you pay for public transportation back and forth for a few days, you might as well order it on the internet.)
Well, here are some of my picks:
1. The Twilight Of Capitalism-by Michael Harrington
2. The New American Poverty-by Michael Harrington
3. Decade of Decision-by Michael Harrington
4. The Bending Cross (A Biography of Eugene V. Debs)-by Ray Ginger
5. Mother Jones (The Most Dangerous Woman In America)-by Elliott J. Gorn
6. The New Industrial State-by John Kenneth Galbraith
7. The Affluent Society-by John Kenneth Galbraith
8. The Man Who Knew Too Much (Hired To Kill Oswald and Prevent The Assassination of JFK-Richard Case Nagell )-by Dick Russell
9. The Arrogance Of Power (The Secret World Of Richard Nixon)-by Anthony Summers
10. Seize The Time (The Story Of The Black Panther Party And Huey P. Newton)-by Bobby Seale
11. No Left Turns-by Joseph L. Schott
12. Secrecy And Power (The Life Of J. Edgar Hoover)-by Richard Gid Powers
13. Echoes Of Revolt (The Masses,1911-1917)- edited by William L. O'Neill
14. The Permanent War Economy (American Capitalism In Decline)-by Seymour Melman
15. My Life As A Radical Lawyer-by William Kuntsler and Sheila Isenberg
16. The Robber Barons-by Matthew Josephson
17. Soon To Be A Major Motion Picture-by Abbie Hoffman
18. The Autobiography Of Big Bill Haywood
19. Legacy Of Secrecy (The Long Shadow of the JFK Assassination-Robert Kennedy, National Security, the Mafia and the Assassination of Martin Luther King)-by Thom Hartmann and Lamar Waldron
20. Bright-Sided (How The Relentless Promotion Of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America)-by Barbara Ehrenreich - 9 months ago

From your list: "Truth Is Stranger Than Fiction" is what woke me up to what 9/11 really was.
Absolutely essential read. It's a great intro to how modern day US foreign policy got to where it is today."New Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency" - looks good too I'll be picking this one up.

Nick19... in order to make an intelligent and informed criticism of the listed materials one needs to READ them first. Until then your opinion is empty and meaningless.

Hegemony or Survival: America's Quest for Global Dominance - Noam Chomsky
Profit Over People: Neoliberalism & Global Order - Noam Chomsky
Unequal Protection: How Corporations Became People - How You Can Fight Back - Thom Hartmann
Blood and Oil: The Dangers and Consequences of America's Growing Dependency on Imported Petroleum - Michael T. Klare - 9 months ago

This is an article full of exaggerations and sensationalism. First off, we have this undefined elite that doesn't want you to read certain material. Ok, when we get into readings about the NWO, thats were I'll lose you because one elite controlling the entire World economy is impossible since they don't have enough money altogether to have any sort of large impact on World economics. More conspiracy theory material as usual and this time involving the CIA...pass. More NWO material. Ok, conspiracy theory material. This shouldn't be in the top ten, voting down.

No, I'm not close minded nor am I blind. I know corporate executives buy our politicians and I know the media is corrupted by the rating system. I agree that certain members of our society have interests in buying politicians for economic purposes. But, I don't believe we have some evil group of World elites aka (Only Westerners through NWO logic) controlling everything since its impossible for them to have enough money to control economic measures. People will argue that its the IMF thats the NWO or the UN or all elites or all Zionists. The NWO is always described as some group of wealthy old westerners and yet fails to realize the dynamics of the World economy as other wealthy classes exist beyond the West such as with China, Japan, etc. Some of the books listed sound ok enough like veterans against the war in all. Thats fine but then things like 9/11 is an inside job is just full of shit as usual. Truthers are no different from Creationists. So I would probably read maybe one or two of those books but the rest can be dismissed as libertarian propaganda or conspiracy theory material.

Thanks for the list. I have so many books waiting on my 'to read' list and so little time to read them. I dare not add another book to my collection until I have made a dent in those that I do own. I have bookmarked the page because I never know when one will move up on the priority list. Right now, I am really wanting to sink my teeth into a book that was recommended by one of the members here at Current. It is called Fundamentalist World and it was suggested by Vforvendetta. It's rght on top of the pile on my nightstand and it keeps beckonning me because I sincerely believe that fundamentalism is a major factor in the problems we face today and is. why it is so hard to course correct. The 'I am right no matter what and you are not' crowd on both sides of the politcal spectrum and in the religious sphere, are keeping us from progressing. The ability for the charlatans in politics to invoke the language and tools, of the evangelicals (who BTW have had centuries of practice) to amass scores of followers who are ready to give the benefit of the doubt and loyally excuse any slight to them, despite facts and evidence to the contrary, so willingly, is just driving us back to the dark ages.

"But nobody reads. Don't believe people read in this country. There will be a few professors who will read the record ... the public will read very little". - Allen Dulles after it was noted that the final 1964 report of the Warren Commission on the assassination of JFK contained dramatic inconsistencies.
