A federal jury says Chicago law enforcement must pay $330,000 to a family after officers shot their dog during a home raid that turned up no illegal activity.
Thomas Russell, then 18, opened the door to his home in February 2009 to find police officers with their guns drawn. He asked if he could lock up his 9-year-old black labrador, named Lady, before letting the officers inside. The Chicago Tribune describes what happened next:
Police refused the request and came into the house, the lawsuit said. When Lady came loping around the corner with her tail wagging, Officer Richard Antonsen shot the dog, according to the suit, which alleged excessive force, false arrest and illegal seizure for taking the dog's life.
The cops handcuffed Russell and his 16-year-old brother, and eventually charged Russell with obstructing their operation. He was found not guilty. According to NBC, the jury awarded $175,000 to Russell, $85,000 to his little brother, and $35,000 each to the brothers' parents. The officer who shot the dog owes $2,000 in damages, and his supervisor owes $1,000, according to NBC.
A law enforcement spokeswoman told the Tribune that the officers were protecting themselves.

    • "fuck the dog" is a fucked up attitude to have, and one of the reasons many people of normally restrained temperament feel like Michael Vick needs a good long thorough beat down.

    • fuck the dog what about the numerous people of color who are asassinated each year by the police? Where is the outrage for that injustice?why doesnt this story have a human being in it in place of the dog? Why does this story evoke more emotion than a story about a human being killed in the EXACT same fashion...people are too attached to their pets considering the fact that one day they will have to EAT them....this is a fucked up world....

On one hand, I get what you're saying about how we are giving time to a dog who was killed without provocation by the police instead of other stories were actual people are killed.

      On the other hand...
We do give time to stories where people, particularly minorities, are killed by police officers without provocation. A lot more time. And those stories tend to get a lot more than 22 comments in the first 12 to 24 hours (with the exception of stories that are accidentally reposted).

As far as, "Fuck the dog," I have to ask, have you ever had a dog? And if you have, what is a dog to you in your family structure? For a lot of people, a dog is a solid member of the family. For fuck's sake, my dog is like my first child.

why are you wasting yourself? the community already knows some folks are just not worth the time. With the high almighty complex and "fuck the dog" attitude, that should tell you that he's just not worth it..

Varex, you know anytime there's a minority or someone shot by the cops, 90% of the time the story lands here. So by him acting like it never happens here, tells you the ignorance you're dealing with.

    • A Lab. Yeah. They were in danger of being beaten to death with the dogs tail as he greeted them. The police routinely do this on raids. Google the incident that occurred in Prince George County, MD where the dogs, labs I believe, of the mayor of Berwyn Heights were shot under similar circumstances. Reprehensible and entirely deserving of retaliation.

    • That poor family! What in the hell did that idiot fuzz think this family did that made them CHOOSE to go all rambo on private citizens? Isn't it true that if you live in a private home (as opposed to a rental property) that even if the fuzz knocks on your door you don't HAVE to open it? Then there's the fact that the kid that answered the door just wanted to put the dog somewhere where she would be safe -- I'd say 330k isn't nearly enough for all the laws those fucking cops broke!
Pwr 2 dog-owning peons! Dismember all rambo cops!

    • What pisses me off is that a Lab is a friendly dog by nature. Being a dog owner I know by the posture of the dog and a dog wagging it's tail is a sign of friendship and curiosity. The biggest thing is that when a family member is threatened the dog will change it's posture in a heart beat and protect their owners. This didn't seem to be the case here and the cops should have been fired for excessive force and had the weapons permits taken away for life.

    • Does anyone honestly believe that this so-called "punishment" of the officers involved will deter any further activities such as this? I see no mention of any of this officers losing their jobs, or any investigation as to why these officers acted in the manner in which the did.

The officer that actually shot the dog has to pay $2,000 out of his pocket, and his supervisor must pay out $1,000. Chances are, the police officer's union probably paid these amounts for them.

Now, are we suppose to be able to rest assured that these officers will never take actions like this again? Do the courts see this as a viable means of deterrent for officers abusing their power? Well, it hasn't worked any where in this nation so far!!!

Every one of the officers involved should have lost their jobs, any benefits that they may have had coming for time of service, and never been allowed to hold any type of law enforcement or security job again. Each one should have been treated just like criminals, for their very acts were in themselves criminal.

We have cities and states all around this country with major budget shortfalls and being forced to pay out $327,000 for a group of cops criminal activities is only going to take away from something that that local government would have been able to offer its citizens.

      Their insurance bonding company pay's
      not their union
around here the only thing different between the cop and the criminal is the bars.
Where I was raised the policeman prevented crime and knew most of us by our first name
and where we lived and their motto on the side of their car was "to protect and to serve"
Today bust and catch if there was no crime disobedience to an officer you are charge with assault then you are guilty

    • Sadly, money is the only thing people in power listen to. It won't bring back the family pet, but maybe they will think twice before they shoot a dog, if there is a cost.

Too many get away with 'bad acts' because there are no consequences for bad actions. Money won't bring back the family dog, but it may protect others in the future.
