Irene hits Puerto Rico as first Atlantic hurricane; headed for Southeast U.S.

After developing and steady strengthening over the weekend, Irene reached hurricane status early Monday morning, becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season as it moved across Puerto Rico with torrential rains and winds.
