    • l am not in a mandatory evacuation zone and do not live in a low lying area, so I will be staying here because once this is over people may need help and I intend to volunteer my services to help out. Don't worry, I will keep safe. I wish everyone in these areas safe passage as well and please, get off the beach! And we may not have electricity for a few days if it goes down, so if so, see you all when it comes back.

    • In Staten Island, New York, the evacuations have proceeded, and the rain is starting. The politicians seemed to have learned from last December’s blizzard mistakes, as everyone has been warned. Mass transit is shutting down at noon. All that is left is the 24 hours of frontal assault. We’ll be alright. I try not to focus too much on the panicking media. They seem to be one-upping themselves in the dash for higher and higher ratings. There have already been shots of reporters being blown around by the wind. I think we get the point.

I have to give kudos to the NYC Office of Emergency Management for the job they have done mobilizing the staff. I am injured right now or I would be working an evacuation center or a shelter. It may come to Irene being a simple tropical storm but it is better to be prepared than not.

    • Masters: “Irene is capable of inundating portions of the coast under 10 – 15 feet of water, to the highest storm surge depths ever recorded. I strongly recommend that all residents of the mid-Atlantic and New England coast familiarize themselves with their storm surge risk.”

    • Sitting here waiting to see if I sink or swim. I just finished bringing all of my hanging baskets and potted plants inside. I hope they don't over heat in the laundry/furnace room. I live in Monmouth County, NJ and it is voluntary evacuation in my town whereas in the town right above me it is mandatory. Rain is just getting hard now. I'm a little worried but I'd rather be home riding this out than anywhere else.

People around here need to heed that part of it at least. There are still clay pots, garbage cans all sorts of things on the street not moved. Panicking is of course not the way to go, but neither is total apathy to this. This is a serious storm. Stay safe.

    • I am praying for all of you that live, or have family that lives in the targeted areas. Please follow all warnings, and take the necessary precautions to evacuate, or stock up on supplies for personal maintenance. In many instances, the effects of these storms can last sometimes for weeks.

They are correct. I grew up on the Gulf Coast, and during Hurricane Alicia, my power was off for over two weeks. Hopefully, you will not experience any power outage, because it can make you life miserable if you are not prepared.

Believe it or not, Christie has also done a good job with this. But then to politicians its all about poll numbers. But still, he so far has handled this well. And FEMA looks to be on their toes this time too. Learning from experience is a good thing.

    • Since when have they played up a measly cat 2 storm for states hundreds of miles away ? This coverage is ridiculously border line paranoid ....are they testing how much bull s**t they can fling without anyone calling them on it ?
All New England states have already declared emergencies....it this a joke or what ? By the time this travels inland towards Maine it will be down to a typical summer storm yet the msm is calling it a storm of the century....someone needs to shoot the weather forecaster!

what you are not taking in to consideration is Population density .Major cities have to be evacuated..that in itself is a massive production . Much of these people are not used to hurricane preparedness. Then you have the terrain in south N.J alone is mostly ocean, woods, bays ,estuaries ,and lakes .o and let's not forget nuclear plants .See a slight trend mostly water. We were told to prepare for 12 foot storm surges off the bay on already saturated ground .We have had our wettest August on record .So not only will water be every where but those woods I talked about earlier will become tree missile launchers cause the ground is too wet to hold them .There is a very high risk of casualties here. I hope you are right that all the hype is BS because I have A front row ticket to the show.Ill le you know how it turns out

I'm not comparing nor bringing politics into this. I'm too concerned with the effects it will have on myself and the people I love. Obama has nothing to do with what I am doing now regarding it nor what will happen as a result of it. Your spamming this in every thread to those who dared voice a contrary opinion to yours to prove a bs point is also childish. Go play your political tit for tat somewhere else.

I'm not your friend, have no idea what "palpable" hatred even feels like ( well maybe towards Monsanto and oil companies) and actually believe that you have become nothing more here lately than what can only be perceived as a paid political operative as you doth protest way too much in regards to dissenting opinions. Criticizing ANY president about policies that are actually or can actually hurt others is not hatred it is concern. And your attempt to even turn this entire thread around because you are so upset that some here don't share your obsession in lieu of actually seeing issues rationally is again childish. There is more to all of this in the scheme of things than Obama, Bush and your political pettiness. And I do see the world for what it is, which is why I put principle first in fighting for what it could be, unlike those like you who would sacrifice it all right or wrong to put a man first. Now if you will excuse me I have more important things to do now than sit here and banter back and forth with you.

Same to your family. And actually, I'm sorry if I came across as nasty. I really am not. You are simply wrong about me regarding Obama. Matter of fact, regarding the Keystone XL and other environmental crises I have asked him to please do the right thing as are many others. If all of his supporters would do so, he just might. This isn't about hate, this is about love for a planet I see being destroyed before our eyes by greed and apathy. It simply has to stop, and if pushing him to use the bully pulpit and to use his decision on the pipeline is one way to do it, I will. Just wanted to clear that up.

    • Just some information for NJ. A category 2 storm is set to hit NJ early Sunday morning with a greater storm surge due to high tide and warmer ocean temperatures. Mandatory evacuations are now taking place from Southern NJ. No other mandatory evacuations announced yet. Up to ten inches of rain is expected with this storm. Expect to be without power Sunday night into the next week.

She has reached the Outer banks of North Carolina.

"Hurricane Irene began lashing the East Coast with rain Friday ahead of a weekend of violent weather that was almost certain to heap punishment on a vast stretch of shoreline from the Carolinas to Massachusetts.

For hundreds of miles, people in the storm's path headed inland, made last-minute preparations and monitored the hurricane's every subtle movement. Irene had the potential to cause billions of dollars in damage all along a densely populated arc that included Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Boston and beyond. At least 65 million people were in its projected track".

      http://www.wunderground.com/tropical/
Check out the "Large Satellite Animations from NOAA/NESDIS and Others" near the bottom of the page. The different links are to different GOES satellites that update every 30 minutes. The "Visible" view is the full data view. I think you will like it.

This is one of my favorite storm tracking sites:
