He never confused substance with symbolism. He never conflated a flesh and blood sacrifice with a stone and mortar edifice. We rightly celebrate his substance and sacrifice because he loved us all so deeply. Let us not remain satisfied with symbolism because we too often fear the challenge he embraced.

    • Agreed. The media, both left and right (well, reluctantly for Foul Noise), tried to be satisfied with his non-violent approach to gaining civil rights for many people in this country. However, they can't get their minds wrapped around his work for equal pay of living wages for all, his stance against the Vietnam War, and his expectation that government of, by, and for the people should invest in the people, all of the people of the US. He saw the widening gap (that is still widening now) between the rich and the poor of any race and believed it was a stain on the founding principles of the US. I hope we will start to heed his full message before it's too late.
