The Military Religious Freedom Foundation is researching how much taxpayer money in the Defense Department is being spent on turning American troops into practicing Christians. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian of The Young Turks discuss.

    • The 28 million on one church was stupid, other than that those figures arent really that ridiculous. There are 2.2 million soldiers active and non active but about 1.4 mil are active if i remember correctly. About 3.2 billion spent on family housing alone, 12 million on a youth program sounds like a lot but put into context its a micro fraction of a 533 billion dollar budget and that 12 million is the total they have recieved not how much is spent annually. 680k on concerts over two years when you consider there is over a 1000 bases in the military right now overseas and about 440 installations domestically you begin to get the picture that TYT is misrepresenting the scope of the issue. Furthermore they say that a lot of this money was speny om ski vacations and ski retreats that shrinks the scope of this even more even if they got a discount for booking a whole lot of people, ski rental if it cost 500 dollars per soldier and if 10000 out of 2.4 mil soldiers get to participate thats 5 million for 1 week, that just not the case. Lets say for the sake of arguement the concerts are held only at the top 15 bases at a cost of 30-50 thousand per over 2 years? *slams fist on desk, cenk uygurs voice* i mean c'mon this is just propaganda blown out of porportion. I think it was especially distasteful how they glossed over the fact that the fort hood shooter was allowed to practice his religion with no issues, made light of the fact there was a massacre there 22 months ago saying "i understand there are sensitivities". He wouldnt be saying 22 months after 9/11 and for people on that base it was 22 months ago and then they go off in outrage at the fact that 1 soldier complained, 1 soldier at fort hood, ONE!
Then they completely ignore the fact that a muslim soldier Naser Jason Abdo was arrested last month in a thwarted plot to massacre more soldiers in a restaurant at you guessed it fort hood. As for religion in the military, from a psychological standpoint it is well known to help a army deal with its worst enemy, which is morale whether theistic or non-theistic but from the viewpoint of the western world which have been culturally thiestic and more specifically christian this has been the case. Most of the time i agree with cenk but this time i not only disagree, i'm disappointed in the way he portrayed this story. How very fox news of him smh. Oh and by the way Cenk no jew would get offended to a reading of the book of ezekiel its in the old testament aka the hebrew bible also known as the torah. Dont let getting fired from msnbc turn you into a propaganda pushing nitwit.

    • "killer Christians" Now that's telling it like it is.

It really amazes me how huge the ultimate con really is. Not only do believers accept anything as long as someone professes to be "Christian", but a whole country of nut cases has anyone who has any other opinion scared shitless of saying anything contrary for fear of being either stoned to death, shot, clubbed or crucified!

      What can you do?

To many of them to get rid of them, they are to stupid to reason with, to brainwashed to accept facts, and to damn hostile to attack, so what's a non believer to do?

      Humiliate them.

Reveal just how stupid their beliefs really are by actually discussing them in depth.

So it's OK to believe something just because someone tell you God told them so.
God wrote a book thousands of years ago and although he is supposed to be omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient, he doesn't have the sense to print a revised version of his world famous masterpiece?

If God owns everything, why does he need your money?

If God can do everything, why aren't Christians healed immediately?

If God is love, why does he advocate murder?

BECAUSE YOU GET ALL THAT IN HEAVEN

What makes you think Heaven actually exists?

Isn't this like seeing an add on the TV for a potion that will immediately heal you of all illnesses, make you permanently young, rich, give you wisdom beyond anything you could imagine and guarantee eternal life and all you have to do is send in a cashier's check for $10,000.00.

Ps, if it doesn't work,it's because you have not believed in it hard enough, just keep trying! lol

    • When I was in the military, there was always a Christian agenda. Of course, this made an atheist like me a total outcast. There is so much "god and country" in the military that anything to promote and try to enhance the christian agenda doesn't surprise me especially in this "crusade" against Islam we find ourselves in. NO matter how anyone frames it, our 'christian' nation is an epic battle with an opposing religion and that can't stand.

We are not at war with Islam unless....you're a "Conned-servative" Christian.

They have been "preaching" their message of hate and intolerance ever since BEFORE September 11th, 2001.

One side cries out, "Crusade!", while the other side cries out, "Jihad!".

      Same difference to my ears.

    • This is clearly a move by the christian churches in this country, they are so jealous of gays having freedom and so much more fun than ever will. How sad they want to put everyone in the same prison that they are in...the prison of conformity.

    • Am I the only one who remembers the 'prayer pledge cards' handed out to service personnel during early days of Iraq invasion? They wanted troops to pledge to pray for the pResident. One wonders what they did with the info on who signed and returned the pledges and who did not.

    • If our military wants to build any million dollar plus church on Government Property then why don't they go to the various ministries that preach their religious whatever and hit them up for the money.
They would be laughed out of their individual ministries. They can ask the Roman Catholic Church for the money. Rome will answer them with What! you want us to pay for What?
Why doesn't the military spend the money on all the armed force men and women that come home and suffer from PTSS and help them adjust back to civilian life?
Why doesn't the military spend the money to further protect those men and women fighting for our freedom.
Enough with the religious crap. Believe what you may and leave the rest to their thoughts.

    • The DOD should NOT be in the business of building or calling for bids on a single religion - ANYthing that smacks of one particular religion. What the hell ever happened to "separation of church and state?"
Certainly, one facility that can be used to accommodate each religion - an "ecumenical church." (That's what they used to do.
Muslims have their services on Friday anyway, and the Christians can use it for their services on Sunday. This whole religion thing is so far over-the-wall that's it is becoming laughable.

Thanks for this link. Crazy crazy crazy - (being the big chicken that I am) I'd make this a case for desertion - this kind of added harassment is close to being abusive - just thinking of the kind of real-life pressure that the troops are under, this borders on attempted brain-washing.

    • This fanaticism for "God and Country" mentality is as old as war itself. Or perchance one minute prior to the first battle that was fought on Earth, as is custom to do before entering into a fight is ask an Entity for the strength to be victorious AND to survive it.

I say leave them be. Give the soldier that is about to come to a realization that his last breath could be that prayer he gives to the Heavens prior to marching onto the field of death and despair.

I have known men, women weren't combat soldiers then, who after returing from war and have the time to reflect on what he has lived through, tend to adopt a sense of reality that there is no justification for going off to kill others.

These soldiers find themselves on a road to understanding that ONLY those who have walked a mile in combat boots know a little about and othes never can until their time comes. Which is highly unlikely with this government as they tend to regurgiate the same poor souls into the thick of things over and over again.

Leave them to their prayers they make to see another day.

As I am wont to do, I research stories to gain knowledge about what I speak of.

What my prior post was taking into consideration was ON the battle field thingy. RIGHT before you may find your life being laid down for your country kinda, sorta thing.

NOT what I have since learned after making my statement about soldiers, death and their praying they don't die.

BUT...big but here folks....I learned that our military HAS built a "fitness center" that smacks HEAVILY of religion.

THIS IS WRONG on all accounts! That "fitness center" needs an overhaul YESTERDAY! And those who had a hand in it's construction disciplined and possibly kicked out of OUR military...to be an example to all that this is NOT what we servicemen and women join to defend!

Man, military service certainly has changed since I last wore a uniform!

    • If the christians who are stationed on a base want a church to go to then let the fucking christians get the money together and pay for it themselves off base. what's truly frightening to me about the military is that the majority of recruits are already indoctrinated christians who hail from fundamentalist corners of our country. My family has a long history of service to this nation my generation is the first to break with this tradition. This evangelization effort is one of my biggest reasons. The military is responsible for providing you with an enlisted chaplain who was to be schooled in all the major faiths so as to be able to perform certain rites and ceremonies as they pertain mainly with prayer/purification ritual prior to battle and last rites at death. They were not allowed to prostylise on government property.

    • I am so tired of this state sponsored and tax dollar financed proselytizing. I used to be a "Christian" but I read my bible and know what Jesus taught, what these evangelicals teach does not even resemble what Jesus taught. The "Religious Right" are responsible for teaching me that the churches are nothing more that scams.

I grew up in the Bible belt and we read a chapter from the Bible every morning and then repeated the Lord's Prayer. Not a bad religious education. I agree with you 100%, wynnmeg61; most religions are manmade institutions geared to control people's minds and make them feel guilty for questioning/seeking the truth. Jesus came to show that love is the answer. He embodied it; He lived it. The "religious right" as you say does the exact opposite.

This picture could insite some crazy christian to take offense just like a muslim taking offense when something is posted that can be taken as an insult to their Holy Man.

I am guilty of this too...and later feel bad for adding my ounce of ridicule to the world.

Not to be "preachy"...I might add. You have the right to address any subject as you see fit, too.

It's just a picture, for crying out loud. Why are people so quick to take offense? Why does everyone take everything so PERSONALLY? C'mon, we should all lighten up anyway. Do we need to post warnings, "Come here at your own peril; we speak our minds" . . . perhaps this is one of the few places left where we can. I try to share information, not tell anyone what they should believe. Too many people take offense. My goodness gracious.

"Why does everyone take everything so PERSONALLY? C'mon, we should all lighten up anyway"

Would that not be wonderful? I would think that could be the best deterent to wars, fights, divorces, firings or even nasty replies to comments made here! But not everyone sees things the way you and I do.

One can always find me in the line with the sign overhead that reads, "Open-Minded, Freedom of Speech Supporters ONLY!".

I try to be aware of the repercussions that my actions may kick into motion. Like that tiny butterfly in Mexico that flaps its wings that eventually causes a tornado to be born in Kansas!

We just can't be positive if something we say or do may irritate an imbecile to kick his kids, beat his wife, curse his neighbors, flip off drivers that happen to be sharing the road with him, which he then pisses off the boss at work and because of his lack of anger management gets fired! So, he drives home working that middle finger, curses the neighbor again, beats the poor wife again and the only saving grace is the kids have already left for school!

All because I posted a picture that he took offense to which started the whole ball rolling.

We never know how we influence others, either good or bad.

The smallest of things we do can be the fuse that sets off a maniac!

Of course, we cannot take ownership of anything someone else does, nor should anyone try to lay blame at our feet for what others do.

      But why tempt fate?

      Karma may be watching ME!

      LOL
