"These things really matter. We all want to fix the terrible problems the country has. But it is so important to know just what the problems are before you decide how to fix them."

Problem: Your right-wing brother-in-law is plugged into the FOX-Limbaugh lie machine, and keeps sending you emails about "Obama spending" and "Obama deficits" and how the "Stimulus" just made things worse.

Solution: Here are three "reality-based" charts to send to him. These charts show what actually happened.

(For the complete story go to http://www.nationofchange.org/three-charts-email-your-right-wing-brother-law-131...)

    • These are great charts to prove Obama shouldn't be reelected. 1) Obama has increased spending on top of Bush's increased spending. 2) Projected estimates on the future of government spending are BS. The reality is the deficit is larger. 3) The job growth is ridiculously low. It will take years to get unemployment down at thte current rate of growth.

    • Foul Noise believers will probably say: "Where do these charts come from?" If it's a sound they don't recognize, they'll retreat back into their holes and wait for the dulcet tones of Michele Bachmann or the boot thumps of Rick Perry to come save the day.

"Where do these charts come from?"

Uhhhhh...from the same place his Birth Certificate came from?

      LOL

Wouldn't that "explode their heads"........right Dick Cheney?

But I'm not sure about that "dulcet" tone.....more like a screaming banshee pitch! Or a boot thump...more like a sound hooves make running on broken glass!

      LOL

    • I got one of my own... (note: I had to adjust scale of the vars to get them all to graph on one chart 1 axis in a Google Doc spreadsheet. That's mathematically sound)

While graphing out the following vars, [population growth, federal spending budget (Real size of Govt) and per capita budget, Life expectancy past age of SS eligibility, and spending on SS+Medicare], what I found was our government has grown from 1913 till now (when adjusted for inflation) linearly with population. So if I have a population of 2 people and a budget of $15.00, next year when I have a population of 4 people I'll have a budget of $30.00, which is pretty awesome! We have way the hell better government services now than we did in 1913.

An anomaly is that of recent years. Spending outpaced that trend since about 1998. I think it's because of the baby boomer population heading into retirement. That and we are living way longer and collecting SS bennies way longer than we have before. Long range is that it will stabilize again because of the baby boomers fading off and population stability.

Other funny things to notice is per capita spending crosses the total budget line around the time computers arrived on the scene. Thus government has been growing in efficiency since the 1980's; yea government! Notice how big a jump the FDR spending was to end the Great Depression. ALSO! The life expectancy prior to the SS and Medicare checks going out was dead by 65. That program has altered this country to give the common person life after retirement. Were up to 12 years of living after retirement now and growing.

Also, living longer means taking more out of SS+Medicare, and with the baby boomers accelerating the number of people taking more longer is causing the rapid growth in that spending (bright green line). It will taper off in the future due to the way our country is populated based on age.

I've been saying, for a long time - ever since the first guy said the baby boomers were coming like he was Paul Revere warning the US - that the wave of old folks won't be around for long and will die off and then where do they get their fear from?

The Rethuglicans act like EVERONE will live until they are 100 years old! But the truth is, only if you've lived an easy life like them do you live that long.

Of course, there's always exceptions to any rule, but the vast majority will die soon after retirement.

      Especially if you're a man!

So, just as soon as that tidal wave of retirees hits shore, that "wave" will go back to the sea soon enough!

When you provide a link to a site that is promoting Reince Priebus as Vice Presidential material or don't count Rudy Giuliani out for a run for the presidency and then tell me that a story they post is reality......I say, yours and mine are not the same.

      Republicans have their reality.

      Democrats have their reality.

I lean towards those who don't believe in creationism, or that the earth is 6 or 12,000 years old.

I asked you in my previous comment for the political Party you supported...I think you just gave me your answer.

This is a CBS analysis. It seems to be non-bias. Last I checked Obama is Christian. So religious belief is not a good argument here. Unless you believe in the walking dead, virgin mothers, and think gays should burn in hell. Back to reality. RON PAUL understands what needs to be done to restructure or economy. Ron Paul 2012!

    • This is an excellent post.

Conservatives will gladly deride the fact that some of the numbers in the charts are projections, and that conservatives fought for the spending cuts and deficit reduction, which is true.

I wish the Obama deficit was higher or, at least, the same. I wish the spending was MUCH MUCH higher.

Then that last graph would look 1000 times better.

    • I saw these charts the other day on AlterNet and PIANORAMA posted them as a comment on another thread. But I agree with her, these charts deserve a page of their own. These are great charts, but try getting this through to a right winger. Good luck. They will believe what they want to believe. I clean for right wingers...so I should know. They won't listen because they are greedy, intolerant and believe the Reps will help them hang on to their money. You can't talk to these people. Then on the working class side, how do you talk to someone who wears a T-shirt with Bush's pic on it and next to the pic it says "Miss Me Yet?" You can't talk to someone like that. It's a lost cause.

I do not know your age but I woud be willing to wager that if you were around for Ross Perot, he was your "man", correct?

I was a Pat Paulsen "supporter" back in the day....I supported him by laughing every time he make a funny.

Ron Paul ain't funny. He's dangerous to freedom. He's the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you see OR hear. Ron Paul reminds me of a gay Republican...only the closet he's hiding in has nothing to do with sexual orientation. It's got everything to do with him being a Nazi.

"Im an an independent with libertarian views."

      There's no such thang!

Like your man, Ron Paul says, "You can't be a little pregnant. You either are or aren't", when he was asked about being a Libertarian.

He said that he caucuses with the Reoublican side because they used to be what he called conservative but they aren't any more.

If you were to listen to what Ron Paul says, you'd think he was more Idependent than Bernie Sanders!

But, Ron is like a snake in the grass hissssssing. He's not a harmless old man. If he EVER were to get in a position of power, this world would be turned upside down.

    • jeffreyak:

"He believes in more freedom and less government. Please do your research."

Oh...I HAVE. You need to go back and re-research what you THINK you know about the man.

Below is what my research has uncovered:

If we were to live in a Libertarian World, there would be NO fire or police departments as we know them today because Ron Paul calls them a "socialistic" endeavor. If you were to become ill or have an injury and no money to pay for hospital services, you're shit out of luck. If you have children you will need to find a school that you can afford to send them to because there would be NO public schools. If you were to be involved in a car accident, there would be NO ambulance to call for help unless you could afford to pay a private company for their services. Your water and sewage treatment plants would be privately owned since there would not be a publically supported system in place. There would not be streets or traffic signals PUBLICALLY supported because Libertarians feel that is a social issue, too. Local governments would not exist to install and maintain them because there would not exist a social system for that purpose. Public roads would not exist or be maintained by local, county, state or federal entities because that smacks of socialism, too.

Whatever you see in the public sector that REQUIRES support through taxation, a Libertarian is against. Because it's a form of socialism to expect all of the government entities to build or maintain, or provide services, period.

All one needs to do is replace the word public with private and then figure out how much that service will cost you PERSONALLY. Imagine what the world would look like?

Need a service? How much are you willing to pay a private company to provide it. This is Libertarianism. You need something? Pay for it. No matter what it is.

Think about if you were traveling to another state and didn't know who to call or how much they charged for a service you required? Or if you needed a cop. Or your car caught on fire and you needed a fire service to come and put the flames out.. You'd have to one, figure out who to call and then two, negotiate how much you would be willing to pay for their services rendered. If they felt like bartering the price they charge. These are all taxpayer government supported public service entities now. But they would all be customer-paid privately held service companies under a Libertarian.

Think cab company. You need a ride, you call a cab and they tell you how much it costs for them to drive you ten miles. Now, replace cab with the word ambulance.

And as Ron Paul states, it's either or....like a pregnant woman. Either she's pregnant or not...she can't be a little pregnant. There is no room for partial public and most private services. Either you're a Libertarian all the way or you're not.

Uniformity would be tossed out the window. Continuity would not exist from town to town or state to state.

Me? I'd rather be able to pick up a phone and dial 911 universally anywhere in this country if an emergency should arise.

See how this would work out in a Libertarian society?

Bill -- amazingly spot on. I use to debate with an ex-friend libertarian all the time but I stopped because he was based in another reality where facts are not welcome. The irony is that he was a fireman!!! I use to laugh at him trying to justify why libertarians are all against the big bad government until it suits them, like police, roads, public schools, fire departments, utilities, garbage disposal, etc., etc... that they can somehow justify. I use to end my frustration in his ignorance of his political views by saying that if you wanted to experience true libertarianism - buy your own plane (since the FAA and air traffic controllers are all government employees - and take a venture down to Somalia and let me know how your libertarian experience goes, if you survive!

Why are people so blind? We already have a THIRD PARTY. It's called Independents!!!!

Now, go round up all the Independents and vote for you guy or gal. Can you say Bernie Sanders?

Now, what would happen? I will repost a post I posted in the recent past:

Let's say there's one hundred people in the U.S., ok? Now, imagine there's always been 49 votes FOR the Republican and 49 votes FOR the Democrat. That leaves TWO votes that swing either way. We'll call them the two wild and crazy Independent voters!

Who, incidentally, are the ones that REALLY hold the power In THEIR hands because those TWO votes ALWAYS determine the winner. EVERY TIME. One cycle, they get tired of the Republican and vote for the Democrat and vice versa.

Now, imagine that those who ALWAYS vote FOR the Democrat, those 49...some, let's say 5 of those 49, get mad and feel their "voice" isn't being heard so they say they will revolt and write in Mickey Mouse's name to PROVE the point that they don't have to throw their vote towards the Democrat! They are making a "statement" that they aren't ANYBODY'S FOOL.

But, while all this is happening those 49 that ALWAYS vote Republican swear their allegiance to the Republican, ensuring that he has their votes!

The day of reckoning comes. All 100 voters go to the polling place to cast their ballot.

AUTOMATICALLY, without missing a beat, the Republican registers those 49 votes. No surprise here, right?

BUT, the poor Democrat only receives 44 votes.

      Mickey Mouse just got 5!

Those two wild and crazy Independents decided to vote for Bernie Sanders because he's their man!

So, now we can count 2 votes for good ol' Bernie!

      Who won?

I try my best to explain what Libertariansim would mean to our society and what the reamifications would be but some think it wouldn't be like that.

Well many people didn;t think the Republican Governors would push for the destruction of unions either, but look what is going on in the states that have a Republican governor.

And the Republicans want to do away with SS and MediCare, too.

Where would we be right now if any one of those Republican Governors had become president?
