The difference is that conservatives in canada has a long history of balancing the books and the republicans have a long history of spending like crazy and putting the u.s in debt.

Canada's fundamentals were good and still is good compared to the rest of the planet.

Actually the Liberal Party is the group who at one time balanced the books, as soon as Harper got in they have been running deficits.

But isn't the situation changing now? It's not the balancing of those "books" but HOW those "books" will be balanced? Like on the backs of the working class rather than spreading the burden out fairly among each citizen, rich or poor?

It certainly appears to me that the wealthy feel no extra inconvenience of a government needing more "revenue" to maintain the status quo.

But what "jingle" the average person hears in their pocket is not making as much noise.

It was how our election system was set up. Basically, 40% of the Canadian popular vote was dispersed across the nation in such a way that he could win over 50% of the regions covering Canada. Since each region is represented in the House of Commons, well, the Conservatives apparently got that majority, and now he can do whatever he wants for 5 years. 4-ish years and counting now...
