"Stephen Harper is very good with people. If by 'good with people' you mean getting people not to like you."
Reminds me of that Twilight Zone episode, "To Serve Man".
Or like how my cat is "good" with mice!
Hey, Canucks! I'll trade ya 546 BARELY used "Americans" for your one "Harper"!
I'll run this deal down for ya:
435 HORs
100 Sit-On-Yers
9 SCROTUMS...er, I mean SCOTUS(es)
1 Vice Presidon't
1 Presidon't (slightly charred)
-----------------------------------------------------
546 Total!What a deal!
Deal?

That wouldn't be a bad thing if we could get our congress men and women to go off for eleven months out of each year! That would solve a lot of our problems right there!

Thanks, we're gonna need it now, "with Jack Layton gone" as "dude" says below - there's no viable opposition now.
And you asked about electronic voting: not here yet. We're fighting it off; it's really amazing how fast the paper ballots are counted, really - results within hours of polls closing. - 9 months ago

Harper and the right wing are evil personified and now they are free to rule without a effective opposition with the death of Layton. We need leaders here that are going to distance themselves from the clutches of the eagle to the south.

The difference is that conservatives in canada has a long history of balancing the books and the republicans have a long history of spending like crazy and putting the u.s in debt.
Canada's fundamentals were good and still is good compared to the rest of the planet.

But isn't the situation changing now? It's not the balancing of those "books" but HOW those "books" will be balanced? Like on the backs of the working class rather than spreading the burden out fairly among each citizen, rich or poor?
It certainly appears to me that the wealthy feel no extra inconvenience of a government needing more "revenue" to maintain the status quo.
But what "jingle" the average person hears in their pocket is not making as much noise.
And...how does a "conservative lead" government accomplish this feat?
Why, cut services that benefit the people!
He's not even "cooled off" yet and Harper has Jack Layton spinning in his grave!
Oh, Canada!

i dont see that, as soon as you make over 80 grand you get ass raped by revenue canada, the wealthy are definitely not getting any breaks as far as i know, if they are im not aware of it, and your average canadian in my opinion is not aware of it either.

I'd have to agree with you Debra, the dumbing down isn't unique to America. It seems to me that whenever big$$$ is involved, even smart people lose their brains en masse.
Some of us would rather stay poor. This misogynistic warmonger (an economist by profession) is only concerned with the his own and others' of wealth.
The comments below by "CalPal" explain how he happened to win again this time. We're been working at changing this system for about 15 yrs and we are getting closer, at least in B.C. We need everyone to wish us good luck. Thanks for your comment. - 9 months ago

It seems we have a long way to go. Canada is mainly a subsidiary of the United States,
But It's population seems to have reached the bottom of the barrel intellectually with their infatuation with right wingers and it is affecting the U.S. We must carefully keep an eye on this development. - 9 months ago

It's not our intelligence that is at risk here - it's living with the tactics of a government (which is elected by those living in a heavily populated eastern Canada, to which and whom most of the wealth flows). Please, do not ever question or doubt our intelligence. Most of us are rather ashamed, altho' quietly, of the direction of our "leaders." They do not reflect the attitudes or the intelligence of the majority.

Hmmm...have you ever heard of the book, "The Naked Lunch"? "The title means exactly what the words say: naked lunch, a frozen moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork."
It's a story about a ventriloquist dummy, sort of...watch the video and see what could happen if someone's mouth stopped working. How a part of the body could take over for the mouth!
Some will go to extremes if their mouth stopped working!

Harper is only in because of semi-retarded people like my girlfriend. When I asked her who she voted for she said the Conservative, when I asked her why she would vote for him she said it was the only name she recognized. Hopeless.

I have an idea! For those like that, and I'm speaking from an American perspective here, why don't you all run a nice, friendly, honorable chap with the name, Myself?
That way when asked, "Who did you vote for?", they can answer, "Myself."
The Party of Myself!
It does have a ring to it, don't you think?
And it might encourage those "not the sharpest knife in the drawer" folks to ACTUALLY vote for their OWN interests!
Wait.....that just might work here in the States, too!
Damn! I'm good!
LMAO!
You know how it is, you have to keep sharp objects away from some people for their own good.

It was how our election system was set up. Basically, 40% of the Canadian popular vote was dispersed across the nation in such a way that he could win over 50% of the regions covering Canada. Since each region is represented in the House of Commons, well, the Conservatives apparently got that majority, and now he can do whatever he wants for 5 years. 4-ish years and counting now...
