As of the 11AM Update from the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Katia is officially a Category 2 Hurricane. As you recall we officially broke it over an hour ago saying Katia would indeed be a Category 2 Hurricane as of this update. It was just declared Hurricane Strength of as 7AM. The reason for this significant change is not re intensification in my thoughts. Katia was likely quite strong for the last day or so, but we now have the first real time data not estimates as Hurricane Katia hit a weather buoy this morning.

Katia Gets Stronger Over Open Atlantic
-- Hurricane Katia is getting stronger as it moves across the Atlantic Ocean.
"By late Monday morning, Katia's maximum sustained winds had increased to 110 mph (177 kph). That makes Katia a strong Category 2 storm, and the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says it's possible Katia will get even stronger as the day goes on.
Hurricane specialist Todd Kimberlain says it's looking less likely that Katia will hit land but that wind from the storm could still affect the U.S. East Coast as it moves north. Kimberlain also says the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions should still keep an eye on Katia.Katia is centered about 540 miles (869 kilometers) south of Bermuda and is moving northwest near 13 mph (21 kph)."

That is some hot water Katia is moving into -- 85+ degrees F according to what's posted below.
This could be one humdinger of a storm!
I'm not going to pray this one hits Texas because it would wash away what's left of their topsoil.
By the end of this year (even right now) how can anyone deny severe climate change from global warming? - 9 months ago

Yes and the remnants of Lee may well be coming to flood up the East Coast. There are still people in NJ without electricity almost two weeks later and people are still on evacuation watch due to rivers cresting due to record rains... and people claimed Irene was hyped. It's not so much the category its the residual effects as well. By those standards Irene was a whopper.

Its not the people in Texas who work hard to put food on the table and pay rent, its those freaking politicians who live in a plastic bubble. May their bubbles burst with a huge pop.

We can't take another one up here. Vermont is in ruins. The Catskills are devastated. We dodged the bullet more or less outside Albany but you don't have to drive far in any direction to see the damage. Disaster relief is a political football. The climate change deniers are in power. All we have is each other.
I found it weird that disaster relief in immediate funding came first to Westchester County in NY, while the ravaged Catskill residents still have to file with FEMA for damages. I also find it odd today's presidential visit took place in NJ and VT was skipped over. The coverage of the damage in the NE was almost ignored by the MSM. TWC is cheerfully gearing up for another battering. It's getting surreal.
Climate change, the economic collapse and soaring food and gas prices should really motivate us to strengthen our communities and try to develop some measure of community self-sufficiency. While we wait for our gardens to grow and get up to speed with the canning and pickling, we should stock up on dried beans, canned goods and other staples as well as medical supplies for a community cache in a flood free zone.
One thing that freaked me out a week ago was the fact that though I had a well - without electricity it was useless. Fortunately our neighbor has a hillside spring that despite the deluge was flowing clean.
I don't think we can say with any certainty that disaster relief is a done deal in this country. I think we should consider alternate plans, not just for ourselves, but to add a little more effort, reach out to neighbors and come up with some contingency plans for our communities.

Flick,
This is getting scary. How terrible that Obama skipped VT but cozied up with Fat Fatty. (Chris Christie) Take care, my thoughts are with you and hopefully your area can dodge one more bullet. - 9 months ago

NJ got hit bad, I have a lot of friends there, so I hope they get help - but I also wonder about the Christie vs Leahy dynamic... Support for Obama was eroding in VT over the summer. I also suspect because the financiers live in Westchester they perhaps got a little more love than the Catskills did, even though they were much harder hit and less able financially to help themselves.
That domestic disaster relief doesn't automatically come before wars of intervention and bank bail-outs is unthinkable. Not enough funding? Really? What have we become?

I agree with you. We have to come together in communities to plan for these events. We are virtually on our own. I wish recovery for VT. It is a beautiful state.

Along with Leahy, even more so Bernie Sanders who has been much more vocal in his opposition to the Obama agenda. We have become a plutocracy, Flick, but not only that we have become a society where Americans hate their fellow man/woman in growing numbers. Only when they need help, does the story change.

Thanks for this image. It could actually cross Florida as well and go into the Gulf. It could actually do a few things. I guess we will have to wait and see in the next couple of days what course it takes.

Al Gore, your favorite and someone I voted for, gave me all the information I needed to believe that global warming is changing the climate. No climate scientist whose work has been peer reviewed has shown evidence to refute that the emissions from our fossil fuel factories and extraction have made the atmosphere and oceans warmer and warmer throughout the decades. While I agree we may have passed our tipping point, we should not give up. To that point, I plan to write the President and tell him how much I disagree with his recent decision concerning smog legislation. I will continue to do what I can and hope we escape the worst of what is possible.

Yeah, I'll be looking for that Low coming from the north. It Always pushes the storms back out into the Atlantic, and brings nice waves.
If the low doesn't show up, I'll be taping up the windows, and pulling out the candles and board games. - 9 months ago

One after another, hurricane after hurricane, those in the path of anyone of these will realize the weather s so screwed up it's time to move. Too higher ground, maybe, away maybe, inland maybe. There is no escape from the seed we have sown, it is projected the now fragile economy will be brought to it's knees by climate change Jan. The final nail in the preverbal coffin is being hammered in, while we dance with the stars. I commend you Jan for all your efforts over the past, but people are so stupid and denied it was happening for too long. Climate change is very real, now it's time to pay the piper. I hope people like you are going to be safe from the weathers wrath, those who have stood in the way of any real change are doomed to suffering. Please take care Jan, you are a remarkable person that did her best to warn us all.

People have been warning of this for over thirty years Kenny. And so many still won't listen. And don't worry, I will do what I need to do to stay safe. I wonder sometimes if this isn't what needs to happen to wake people up, but then I wonder how many will it take? I honestly don't know anymore.

I don't think we can stop it now, the tipping point has come and gone! I have been hearing of Laser tech that has been being developed that actually can effect the weather. Forming big drops of rain in cloud formations, too little to late possibly. We shall see, Governments around the world are scrambling to do something. I am sure the Elite have known this was coming for sometime, and have actually worked against stopping it from happening. End result is what they have wanted for sometime, depopulating an over populated planet is exactly what they want. Climate and Earth changes are happening for sure, keep safe Jan you will be needed in the future!

Thanks for that. Looking at the tracker at the link, depending on wind sheer I'm hoping it doesn't make a beeline for NJ. I actually hope it goes East and stays away all together. We won't know until the end of this week I would guess. And even though they make me nervous when I see them getting closer to land, I am fascinated watching them.

Jan, I'm glad that you made fine with Irene visit. Hurricanes are very dangerous, I have experience a few of them with Wilma taking the roof off my house. I spent that night inside my tub with pillows and blankets on top of me, it was a trully scary experience which I hope never repeats itself. So make sure you are well prepared for what might come. Sometimes these storms make unexpected turns so it's best to be prepared just in case.
