Momma Bears, Don't Let Your Cubbies Grow Up To Be Car Thieves.....

"It was 3:30 a.m., and Brian McCarthy was fast asleep when a bear took his 2002 Toyota Prius for a test drive. The Pleasanton man's car had been parked in the driveway of his west Lake Tahoe cabin.

After wedging itself inside the car, the bear became stuck. Frustrated, hungry and mad, it kicked, scratched, bit and tore at the interior of the hybrid, trying to force a way out as easily as it found its way in.

In its behind-the-wheel rampage, the bear ripped open the seats, bit a chunk out of the steering wheel and damaged the Prius' gear box, shifting the car into neutral.

From the safety of the cabin, the awakened family watched helplessly as the commandeered Prius slowly started rolling out of the driveway."

Bears are really really smart. They watch us more than we know. In many places, they are near, watching, and we are oblivious to them. They watch. They learn.

Maybe this one noticed people in cars frequently come home with groceries and take-out. Might have used bear logic to speculate that cars=goodies, even if the car did not have that new whopper smell. Maybe the local pizza delivery guy has the same color car.

A bears sense of smell is staggering. We may THINK there is no food odor. Bears will KNOW if there is a whiff of food.

Thought you all could use a giggle, and all of us could use reminders that bears are clever, curious critters and they move among us in places we might not suspect. Be bear aware.

    • My Chrysler LeBaron was once a home for squirrels in the winter, but they didn't steal it. They totaled it all the same when their nest caught fire under my hood.

Good thing I keep my Prius in the garage in case any bears swim to Staten Island for a Joy ride. ;)

    • So Toyota equals food for bears--yet another reason to buy American. Although good luck with finding American made cars, trucks, or anything else!

Seems more likely the bear noticed that cars are pretty successful hunters, always bringing home the groceries and such.

Aren't the Toyotas sold in the US, assembled in the US? Sadly, not in union factories, but I do believe they are made here.

That aside. I doubt bears are as suceptable to brand name influence as humans are ;^)

You know you're right bout Toyota's being assembled here in the low wage states of the south. Proud as could be yesereee! Hell they let em race in Nascar even--------------it's just one giant success story all round!

    • Great article -- thank you for the laugh :-)! This article reminded me of the Nissan Leaf commercial where the bear leaves the North Pole and travels all the way down to the driveway of the guy who bought a 'Leaf' and gives him a hug for being 'green'. Guess the bear in this story wasn't lookin' for a bear hug :-)!
