    • What no insane, convoluted conspiracy theories about how this was an underwater nuclear detonation test by the Illuminati in preparation for the mass genocide of most of humanity in 2012? Is there a Firefly marathon going on or something?!

EV Check out the work of Emily Brodsky U of Cal Santa Cruz.. She is a professor of planetary science and geodynamics. Also there was a good graphic on "How the Earth was Made" but I cannot remember which episode.

Jan, as always, I sure do appreciate your updates! I of course am a heavy supporter of your submissions, in general, as well you must know by now. I no longer have the kind of time to always comment/reply, but whatever you share with the rest of us, you can be sure I'm at least reading it and feeling grateful for your participation and, especially, your cares and concerns.

Thanks Jan, we're "tucked in" safe, today was just another reminder... just gotta "roll" with it I guess. I know that my family felt it more than I did - they live almost directly across the water from each other and the ferry terminal was closed temporarily at Courtenay/Comox - reopened shortly thereafter.

The GSC said that the tsunami warning is up but would be practically immeasurable because of the shallow nature of the quake - maybe centimetres notice only at high tides.
      Let's hope no more aftershocks.

    • It sure did shake here - it was a rolling, woozy type.
They're still saying 6.7 from Victoria BC Station.
      No injuries, no broken stuff.
      Seattle felt it too.

In the city of Vancouver - just talked to my sister who's at Comox (on posted map - mid-island) and daughter (mainland north near Powell River") - they both report hard rolling, and items in house, eg lights swaying, dishes rattling - but nothing broken. It wasn't sharp, which is more typical of these shallow quakes (this one was 29 km deep), it was more of a rolling motion than a sharp shaking motion.

Meant to add: my daughter said that she was in the car, parked at the time and thought someone was rocking her car from behind; said she looked at one store window and it looked like it was "bowing."

Well, I am so relieved to know your family -- and everyone else -- went through this experience okay. I find the rolling ones a little bit less scary, but I always do get motion sickness (!) from that type.

Happy to learn you live in Vancouver -- it's a really beautiful and friendly city and, if I could afford to do so, it'd be a consideration of mine to move there. One of the things I most love about Vancouver is the feeling of safety when taking walks late at night.

Thanks, and thanks for posting this (won't get much attn cuz it's the west coast, alas). I love it here, but it's way way too expensive. I'm going to retire in a few weeks and hopefully move to the Island (used to live there, loved it, no jobs except in Victoria) - likely will find a cave somewhere north of Nanaimo (if it hasn't "caved in" haha).

A 6.7- magnitude earthquake hit off the coast of B.C. Friday afternoon, and some people in Metro Vancouver say they could feel the tremors.

The quake hit about 279 kilometres west of Vancouver at a depth of 23 kilometres around 12:41 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Service. A map of the event puts it just off the coast of Vancouver Island,

Some people living and working in downtown Vancouver took to Twitter immediately after the quake to say they felt a small shake. British Columbians have reported feeling movement close to the epicentre in Port Hardy and Parksville, as well as on the mainland from Delta to Mission and up to Squamish.

People as far away as Kelowna and San Francisco have reported feeling the effects of the quake.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says there is no threat of a "destructive widespread tsunami," but adds that smaller local tsunamis are possible within 100 kilometres of the epicentre.

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck off the coast of British Columbia, the U.S. Geographical Survey says.

The quake struck at 12:41 p.m. Friday at depth of 16.1 miles about 173 miles west of Vancouver, and was felt as far south as Seattle.

"I was on the beach and the time and it felt like the beach turned into a water bed," said Perry Schmunk, general manager of Long Beach Lodge Resort, about five miles south of Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island. "There was considerable shaking here."

Schmunk said it felt like the quake lasted about a minute, but he was not aware of any damage that it caused. It did not knock things off the shelves at the resort, he said.

      U.S. Geological Service report

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake has struck off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island, officials at the Pacific Geoscience Centre have confirmed.

People are reporting buildings swaying for extended periods from the Fraser Valley to Campbell River at around 12:41 PT p.m., but there are no reports of damage.

Officials say the quake was too small to trigger a tsunami or cause more than small damage, but aftershocks could be felt in the coming days.
