Inventor Hopes to Modernize the Wall Calendar

James Barilla had a simple idea.

While doing his schoolwork, he was trying to think of a better way to organize his time.

Within moments, Barilla had thought of a way to modernize the paper calendar into an electronic calendar.

Now comes the hard part - turning an idea into an actual product.

Barilla, 25, of Tresckow, had faith in his idea. He immediately began researching ways to invent his new product and after a year of working with Invention Resource International his idea, the "Barilla Touch Screen Calendar," has finally been turned into a prototype.

Now, he is waiting for the right company to invest and market his invention.

Barilla came up with the design and features for the product himself, but is looking for a company to create and market the product.

"I think there is definitely going to be a market on it," he said. "I am very hopeful that it will sell."

Barilla said he can compare his touch-screen calendar to the e-readers.

"People are going from paper books to these electronic book readers," Barilla said. "And I look at this as the same thing; the way to modernize the wall calendar."

With the long and costly process of getting an invention in the market, Barilla said he was surprised with all the support he got from his family and friends when coming up with his invention.

Barilla graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in sociology and was working on getting his master's degree in humanities when his idea had come to him. "They were very supportive for somebody that was in that position," he said.

Everyone he mentioned the idea to reacted very well and had nothing but hopeful things to say about it, Barilla said.

This may not be Barilla's last invention. Depending on how his touch-screen calendar plays out, Barilla said he has a few more ideas for products that he has been considering investing in sometime in the future.

"Financially it's not a cheap thing to do; to try to watch an invention and get it in the marketplace," Barilla explained. "So I have to wait and see how this one goes first."

Barilla said he originally wanted to get his Ph.D. and become a professor, something he still may do, but depending on how well his first invention takes off he may consider a secondary career as an inventor.

Barilla has been working with Invention Resource International to find a company to buy and distribute his invention.
